When I came home from work last Monday, my son mentioned that the kid at school had called him banana.
I kept wondering why he was associated with bananas when he was not eating them in school. He then told me it was because of his yellow jacket.
Every day by 6 a.m., my son and I would already be waiting for his school bus, I would tell him to wear the jacket given to him by my brother as a Christmas gift. It was dear to me because it was given by a special person in our lives. And because of its lightweight(轻质)material, it was just right for him to resist the cold wind for the one hour ride. Sometimes he forgot to take it off when arriving at school, because it was so light. He had been wearing it to school every day for 1 year and 7months before this happened. It broke my heart to learn. My son was feeling hurt, so I brought out his new jacket, which I had been keeping for his primary 3 years.
When he saw I the smiled the next day. I was looking forward to hearing his stories from school. He couldn't wait to tell everyone at home that the kid had stopped calling him banana, but come up with other names such as Black Panther (黑豹)and Boring Wilson.
Even though he was considered a boring kid, he was not upset anymore because he knew in his heart that he had many jackets in different colors to choose from. Most of all, he has a family who loves him dearly. He knows now the names people give us out of love or other reasons don't define(定义) us. Everyone is more than what he wears.
Independence Day is a national holiday in America. Similar to other summer-themed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Many politicians(政治家)make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nationals, the nation's laws, history, society and people.
Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic. Many people spend the holidays staying with relatives or friends. Little things used to celebrate the day are colored red, white and blue—the colors of the American flag.
Parades (游行.) are often held in the morning before family get together, while fireworks displays (烟花表演) take place in the evening. Independence Day fireworks are often displayed with patriotic songs such as America, the Beautiful, My Country and so on. Fireworks shows are held in many states, but some states such as New. Jersey don't allow the use of fireworks, considering people's safety.
A salute(鸣礼炮)of 1 gun for each state(州) in the United States called "a salute to the union "is fired on Independence Day at noon.
New York City has the largest fireworks display in the country. It is often held on the East River. The major displays are in places such as Seattle on Lake Union and Boston on the Charles River.
Since Independence Day is in July, the first week of July is one of the busiest United States travel periods of the year as many people use what is often a 3-day holiday weekend for extended vacation trip.

Jim grew up fishing with his family on Minnesota lakes. When he was a teenager, he joined a bass (鲈鱼) -fishing club." The first year I was in the club, I won the state competition," he says. That success drove him to dream of fishing for a living.
After college, Jim worked for a book-publishing (出版)company. But all the while, he was practicing his fishing skills. In 1995, Jim became a professional angler (钓鱼者), competing in tournaments(锦标赛) for a living.
Each tournament begins with searching. For three days; contestants (选手)-search the lake or river for good places to fish. Jim goes out at sunrise. He tries to figure out where the fish are hanging out. There are some clues. For example, on sunny days, bass often hide in shadows made by weeds, rocks, or boat docks. In the spring, bass lay eggs in shallow water.
After searching is over, the four-day tournament starts. Contestants fish for eight to nine hours each day. While Jim is fishing, he also tries to figure out the best way to catch those fish. Every afternoon, each angler weighs the five biggest bass he or she caught that day. Then all the fish are returned to the lake. At the end of the tournament the winner is the one whose 20 fish weighed the most. A smaller prize is awarded(奖赏) to the contestant who caught the single(单个的)heaviest fish.
In 18 years of professional fishing, Jim has won 3 major tournaments and 21 top-10 finishes. "When you have a goal or a dream in mind, go for it," Jim says, "That's what I did. But it isn't going to fall into your lap. You have to put a lot of effort into it."
Training Honeybees
Honeybees(蜜蜂) can be trained to search for dangerous chemicals(化学物质) because bees have a very good sense of smell.
Since bees have brains the size of a pinhead(针头), you might think that they would be slow learners. Bees can be trained to find a new smell in just one or two days. They are given a chemical smell. After this is repeated once or twice, the bees lean to link(联系)the new smell with a food reward (奖励;奖赏).
The next step is to allow the bees to search for the bottles marked with the same chemical smell. Each time a bee finds a bottle, it is rewarded with sugar water.
, but dogs have good days and bad days. Bees are always ready for work. 'It takes months to train just one dog, but it only takes a few days to train' 10,000 bees or more. With many bees working together, bees can search large areas quickly.
When you see many trained bees gathering in one area, you can know dangerous chemicals are below.
A. Immediately, (立即;马上) after that, the bees are given a drop of sugar water. B. Dogs also have an excellent sense of smell C. We can often see that many bees are kept to make honey for us. D. But this is not the case. E. Bees can also get in places too high for a person to reach and too small for a dog to enter. F. Bees are much smaller than dogs but dogs are always afraid of bees. G. After several days, the bees are fully trained and will search for the smell even without a food reward. |
One day the hunter(猎人)went hunting with his dog. He saw a rabbit running out of a bush not far in front and 1 raised his gun to shoot. The rabbit was hurt, but 2, it ran away. The hunter waved to the dog to 3 it. The well-trained dog rushed like an arrow, running very fast and the food the hunter would give it cheered it 4.
The rabbit ran so desperately(拼命地) that it 5 not to have been hurt at all. However, the dog was surprisingly left behind. Gradually (逐渐地), the dog was losing sight of看不见)the rabbit. At last, when the dog 6 empty-handed, the hunter was angry and blamed it" How 7 ! Unable to catch an injured rabbit! No supper .for you!" Feeling sad, the dog tried to explain for 8"Though I didn't catch it, I had done my best."
When the rabbit went home, all the other rabbits were surprised at its 9(They were dying to ask, "How did you 10 to run away when the dog almost caught you? It's unbelievable!" The frightened rabbit answered, "The dog would only be blamed for not catching me at most, 11 all it did was to do its best. The situation is completely different 12me. I would surely lose my life 13 I was caught. I had to go all out."
We can learn a lesson for our daily life from the story. Have we ever examined ourselves and asked 14 we did our best? Never give up when we face difficulties because you will never succeed in that 15.
A long time ago, there lived an unhappy king. He didn't feel like (have) any food or drinks. His face was always pale and he often cried for no reason. Without , he caught a bad illness, which made the queen and his people worried.
One day, a doctor was called in to examine the king. He found nothing wrong with the king's body but his mind. "Neither medicine. rest can help him. What he needs to make him happy is the shirt of a happy person to wear."
A famous artist was called to come to the king's room. But this was what he said: "I'm afraid I'm not happy, either. It's true that my paintings are very popular and expensive now. But, you see, if I stick only one painting style, the pictures (copy) easily by others. My wealthy life will end up and I will be poor again!
