It has been Wu Rongjin's dream to be a positive influence on her students since she started teaching at Luwan No.1 Central Primary School in Shanghai.
The school, near the Memorial for the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) (中共一大会址), has rich historical resources to help its students learn about the history of the CPC.
During a visit to the memorial in 2005, Wu noticed some of the students were not interested in the guide's description. Later, Wu arranged for the students to revisit the memorial, and write their own tour and narration script (解说词) in simple language. Wu wanted to help the students learn about the revolutionary (革命的) tradition in China, and treasure their happy lives.
A group of the students began working as tour guides, especially for visitors of their own age, at the memorial. The students' lively narrations have won high praise from visitors.
During the past 17 years, Wu has worked with the students(tour guides)to organize tours, write narration scripts, and explore new forms of narration in Chinese and English.
Many former members of the teenage narration team have continued taking part in related narration activities, even though many of them are now studying in middle schools or universities, or have even started working life.
Hu, now a middle school student, says he is often stopped on the street and told, "I remember you. You were a member of the teenage narration team at the memorial." Lin, another former member of the team, is studying abroad. She says she can still remember all of the narration scripts.

Amazon has opened 24 of its Amazon Go stores, which use cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) to see what you've taken off shelves and charge you as you walk out. Some companies are closely copying Amazon's approach to using AI-powered cameras fixed in ceilings. But others are trying an entirely different way to skip the checkout: smart shopping carts. These companies have added cameras and sensors (传感器) to the carts, and are using AI to tell what you've put in them. Customers pay by entering a credit card, or through an online payment system. When a customer exits the store a green light on the shopping cart shows that their order is complete, and they're charged.
The companies behind the smart carts, including Caper and Veeve, say it's much easier to add technology to the shopping cart than to an entire store. Amazon's Go stores rely on hundreds of cameras in the ceiling. The shelves also include sensors to tell when an item is removed. Ahmed Beshry, co-founder of Caper, believes the technology to run Go is too expensive to use in a large-format grocery store. Neither Caper nor Veeve has said how much their smart shopping carts will cost, making it difficult to compare the different formats. Shariq Siddiqui, CEO of Veeve, said, "We're always happy when Amazon is doing something. They force retailers(零售店) to get out of their old school thinking."
Each time a business uses AI and cameras, it raises questions about customers' privacy and the effect on jobs. Beshry notes that the cameras in his shopping cart point down into the cart, so only a customer's hand and part of their arm will be captured(拍摄) on camera.
Antarctica (南极洲) is the coldest, windiest, highest and driest continent (大陆) on the planet. The lowest temperature ever recorded on Earth was -94.7℃ in eastern Antarctica in 2010. The continent experiences regular Katabatic winds, reaching 300 km per hour. There is little rainfall and the air is very dry. Indeed, the Polar Plateau (极地高原) is regarded as a desert which experiences similar rainfall levels to the Sahara Desert.
It is the fifth-largest continent and is almost 1.5 times the size of the United States. Its coastline covers about 18,000 km. About 98% of the continent is covered in a thick continental ice sheet and the remaining 2% is rock.
Antarctica has six months of daylight followed by six months of darkness. It contains 70% of the planet's freshwater and 90% of the world's ice.
Strong winds and wild storms have been closely connected with Antarctica since its discovery and continue to be a main challenge for modern explorers. Most of the early diaries and tales of exploration of Antarctica are filled with stories of how the weather was man's biggest enemy on the continent. Nature's power is seldom seen as ferocious as it is in Antarctica, making it one of the most difficult places to live on Earth.
The first people to reach the South Pole were from the Norwegian-led expedition (探险队) of Roald Amundsen on December 14, 1911. One month later, Robert Scott's British expedition also reached 90 South but all members unluckily died on their return journey.
Before this, the thought over the existence of a "southern land" was not confirmed until the early 1820s. At this time, British and American business operators and British and Russian national expeditions began exploring the Antarctic Peninsula area and other areas south of the Antarctic Circle. In 1840, it was believed that Antarctica is indeed a continent and not just a group of islands.
Hardscaping (人造景观) refers to man-made features of a landscape such as driveways, walls, steps, and other human-made structures. It has many sustainability benefits.
Replace Lawns (草坪)
Fertilizers and pesticides (化肥和杀虫剂) help establish a beautiful lawn. If you replace lawns with hardscaping, you'll use fewer chemicals and do less harm to the environment.
Use Less Water
So it can save hundreds of gallons of water and reduce the carbon emissions(排放)used to provide that water cleanly.
Use Locally-Produced Materials
Materials for hardscaping are almost all produced locally, due to the high shipping cost.
Lower Garden Maintenance (维护)
Usually, Americans spend two hours per day on lawn and garden care. That often means less energy used to run some garden equipment.
Reduce Ice Build-up
Sustainable hardscaping allows stormwater to drain (流) into the soil. This means safer walkways or driveways, and a reduced need for salt for de-icing (除去……上的冰).
A. Hardscaping is a form of landscaping.
B. This means lower carbon emissions for transportation.
C. Yet little maintenance is needed for a hardscaped area.
D. The water hardscaping uses mainly comes from nature.
E. There are ways to lower your impact on the environment.
F. So there is often less ice formation on hardscaping in cold winters.
G. But they can run into the water system and harm both humans and wildlife.

Long long ago, there lived a girl named Eat. She was a good girl, but she never liked her name because all the kids made fun of her name. She ran away from everybody who laughed at her name, so Eat never really had friends. She played alone all the time.
One day, Eat went to her favorite place near the river behind her house, where she always spoke to the river. On that day, when talking to the river, she said, "You are so lucky, as you can travel to different places and always be with your friends—ducks, turtles, fishes, and plants. I wish I had more friends and wouldn't be alone anymore."
When she was bored talking to the river, she picked up some stones and tried to skip (打水漂) them across the river. However, she failed most of the time. Finally, she found a perfect stone. She held it tightly (紧紧地) in her fingers, and said to the river, "Oh, dear river, if I could skip this stone all the way across, I would wish for a dear friend just like you." Saying this, Eat waved her arm back and threw the stone with full strength.
She watched the stone skip once, twice... and to her surprise, the stone went on skipping and finally, on the seventh skip, made it across the river onto the shore of the opposite side. Eat was totally amazed. She could not just believe her eyes.
Her happiness were disturbed (打断) when she heard footsteps coming towards her. Eat looked around and found a little girl was rolling down towards her. Eat hurried to get up to help. However, she lost her balance and fell off , too.
