Helen is in Grade Eight. She always smiles (微笑) to everyone and she's always glad to help others. But do you know she had a sad story?
Helen's parents died in a fire when she was nine years old. After that, her aunt and uncle adopted (收养) her. They sent her to a new school. In that school, Helen knew nothing about her new classmates. She didn't talk too much and she was shyer and quieter than most kids. That made it difficult for her to make friends. Her aunt and uncle worried about her. However, after making friends with a funny girl Sandy, Helen became more outgoing than before. Sandy usually tells jokes to make Helen laugh.
Helen is really hard-working and she always get As in her lessons. Sandy says, "Helen often helps me with my homework. Now I'm getting better grades than before. Though she is different from me, I like her very much."
Our family was friends with Betty for many years. Over the years, we shared phone calls, birthday cards, and much more. Every year, Betty sent our son Brandon a birthday card with five dollars in it. She did this until Brandon graduated (毕业) from high school.
One year, not long after her birthday, I called to see how she was and asked her if she did anything special for her birthday. I was surprised when Betty didn't answer the phone. Instead, her daughter Carol did. Carol told me that her mom was ill. She was in hospital. Carol gave the phone to Betty. I talked to Betty and let her know that we loved her.
