One Day University
One Day University was founded by Steven Schragis in 2006. He came up with the idea after he dropped his daughter off at college in upstate New York. The school had about a dozen professors giving short talks about a variety of subjects. All the parents had the same reaction: "I wish I were the one going to college!"

Madison stared through the window and watched a puffy white cloud pass over the woods across from the school. It must be wonderful to be a bird, she thought. Total freedom. No math class to sit in, and her days would be spent on horseback. She thought of her horse, Star.
"Madison. Could you please join us again?" Mrs. Smith said. "I was just asking the class if anyone had any problems with the homework assignment. "
"Well, I didn't have any problems doing it, but I had problems remembering to put it in my school bag after I did it. " Some giggling spread through the room.
"Madison. I don't know what I am going to do with you. You're such a smart girl but you just don't apply yourself. Class, clear your desks. Our guest is here and welcome Doctor Landon. He is a veterinarian (兽医). He came here today as part of our continued Career Explorations Program. "
Madison tried to focus as Doctor Landon talked about how important grades were and how he struggled with math when he was a kid. Doctor Landon was still talking but she lost track of what he was saying. Then a word caught her attention. Horse. Was he talking about horses?
Gradually, Madison knew Doctor Landon had come to her town and house when her horse, Star, needed care. She liked it that he even knew her horse's name. "So, you just travel around and take care of horses all day long?"
Doctor Landon nodded. "I travel with my truck to take care of horses and ponies across the county. It is a lot of work, but I love it. "
Madison's mouth fell open. What a life that must be, she thought. At that moment, sitting in class, Madison could see her future and her life suddenly seemed bigger. By the time she got off the bus that afternoon, her plans for the afternoon had changed. She was still going to ride Star, but first she was going to spend an hour studying math. Then tomorrow she'd spend an hour studying science.
Clothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers (零售商) are demanding to get on board in hopes of attracting green shopper.
But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline investigated (调查) this question and concluded that it's not as sustainable as it seems.
Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented — receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing.
She writes, "An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilograms of carbon each way, and increases up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. By comparison, the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased from a physical store and washed and worn at home is 33. 4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levi's. "
Then there's the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it's returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry cleaning, a high impact and polluting process. All the rental services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene (氯乙烯), a carcinogenic (致癌的) air pollutant, still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with alternatives, although these aren't great either.
Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it's so easily accessible. There's something called "share washing" that makes people waste more precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this, advertised as "a way to share rides and limit ownership. " and yet "it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling, and public transportation use. "
Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but we shouldn't let the availability of these services make us too satisfied. There's an even better step — that's wearing what is already in the closet.
VARK is a questionnaire that helps with your learning by suggesting the strategies you should be using. According to VARK, some people learn best by reading materials, while others are more visually-oriented (视觉导向的) and must see something to understand. Others might fall into the auditory (听觉的) learning subtype, meaning they tend to understand materials by listening to instructions. There are also kinesthetic (动觉的) learners, or those who learn best through hands-on activities.
Learning style theories had their popularity in the 1990s, when Beth Rogowsky was just starting as a middle school teacher. "At that time, when my students were given some learning material, if they disliked reading it, they could listen to it instead as long as they'd like to listen to others reading it; whatever they preferred, they would be encouraged to do it," says Rogowsky, who is now an associate professor of teaching and learning at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania.
But when it comes to preferred learning styles, there's a problem. The idea of using learning styles emerged in the 1980s as many researchers voiced their support, but few actually tested their concepts to confirm the validityin randomized, experimental settings. In the 2000s, when researchers started to do just that, they found little evidence that matching students to their supposed learning style helped them memorize information better.
Rogowsky herself has confirmed the belief that learning styles don't hold up in her recent studies. In one study published in Frontiers in Psychology this year, Rogowsky and her colleagues tested fifth-graders with preferred auditory and visual learning styles. Students were given standardized reading tests, in both written and audio formats. The team didn't uncover a relationship between their preferred learning styles and academic performance, according to Rogowsky.
The team's study noted that a preference to learn material using a certain method could mask skill lack. "Someone who prefers to learn by listening instead of visual approaches might just have underdeveloped reading skills. Letting students learn in their preferred manner doesn't push them to improve weaker skill sets," Rogowsky says. "If you need to improve your skills, don't just keep doing what's easy to you. "
How to Increase Your Levels of Optimism
The way in which you achieve your goals, face challenges, and overcome failures depends largely on your levels of optimism. Not everyone sees life in the same way.
Change your negative thoughts. Your mind takes in negative memories and makes them bigger and more significant than they really are. The next step is to reduce them by comparing them to related or similar memories that are more pleasant. In this way, you gradually change them and select new thoughts. This requires a learning process that'll take some time to practice. However, with patience, you'll achieve the desired results.
Express gratitude. When you face a challenge, it's advisable to figure out what's going well. By taking the time to do this, you allow yourself to register the positive aspects that you experience. To help your brain store these positive events, you should take time each week to analyze what you should be grateful for.
Repeat positive affirmations(肯定). One key element for increasing your levels of optimism that you get with previous two steps is positive affirmations. In fact, these messages that you repeat to yourself most regularly are the ones that you believe in and that determine your vision of life. You can start with one or two affirmations that represent the values you want to live by and the goals you want to achieve. For example, tell yourself "Every day I'm improving" or "I'm living my best moment". Furthermore, it'll make you stronger in the face of them and you'll maintain your optimism.

Jigging Taiping Drum is a traditional form of dancing. With its display of profound cultural elements, it (include) in the first batch (批次) of China's national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) items in 2006.
The (early) historical references of this art date back to the Spring and Autumn Period. At the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, it started to gain (popular) in and around the capital, and then it was introduced to Mentougou District of Beijing.
In ancient times, the drums were played New Year's Eve at the imperial palace to bring peace. As a result, the performance also became known as the "New Year Drum"by Beijingers. This type of drum dance is commonly seen (perform) during the last and first month of the lunar year in many local festive activities, thus expressing people's hope of peaceful and prosperous year to come.
During a given performance, drummers perform various dance moves while (hold) the drum in their left hands and a mallet (球棍) in their right hands. Traditional Chinese aesthetic (美学的) concepts are reflected in the drum playing, all of represent distinctive local features.
In the past decades, efforts (make) by Mentougou District to preserve this signature folk dance culture. Today, the time-honored folk art of the Jingxi Taiping Drum is being taken up by the young people is presenting its lively artistic charm (魅力) on a global stage.
My exchange year was a great experience for me. I successfully enhanced their language skills. To be precise, my speech experience helped me develop my English speaking skills, thus allow me to understand more about how to make presentations in the public. Besides, I meet all kinds of helpful people there and had fun. I thanked those people which helped me. I learned to think about things from a different point view.
