Ann is a newspaper reporter. She chose this1so she could travel around the world. The work has taught her many unforgettable (令人难忘的) lessons. She has seen wars, earthquakes and death. But she has 2 seen courage, hope and happiness.
Last year, she won an award for her reporting in Africa. She was very proud 3 it. At first, she thought she got the award because of her good work. But then she realized that she should thank many other people for 4 help.
Ann was born in Jamaica. Her family was not poor, but it was not 5 , either. Her parents had to 6 hard so that she could go to school. At school, Ann was not a good student, 7 she enjoyed writing because her English teacher said, "Ann, you are a wonderful 8 " The teacher encouraged her all the time.
Later, Ann went to university in Canada and then 9 a job. It was very difficult. Then, one day, she went to see the editor of a newspaper in Ottawa. The editor gave her a job. "Everyone needs a 10 at first." he said.
The bell for class rang. All the students took out their books, waiting for the teacher. Our Chinese teacher, Miss Liu, had told us before that we were going to write a composition in class.
A minute passed, and another, but the teacher didn't show up. We began to wonder what was the matter with her. Was she ill? Or had she forgotten about the class? Nobody could tell. Soon some students began to study other subjects, and some students began to talk and even made noises.
About ten minutes later, the door opened and Miss Liu at last came in, smiling. She didn't say sorry to the class. We felt a little angry. The teacher often told us never to be late for class and said it was bad manners to be late. She also said that if we were late, we should make an apology either at once or after class. But now she was late and had kept the whole class waiting for such a long time and didn't even tell us the reason. It was unfair. At this moment, Miss Liu picked up a piece of chalk and wrote "The Teacher Is Late" on the blackboard and said that was the topic of our composition. All of us smiled and understood what the teacher meant.
Nobody knows how many different languages there are in the world. The most widely used language is English. It's used by business people, airline pilots all over the world. It's also the first language of sports and science. So it's very important for us to learn English.
English is most widely spoken in the world, while Chinese has the largest number of speakers. There are not only over one billion people living in China, but also many Chinese people living outside China. You can find large or small groups of Chinese people living in almost every country in the world.
There are some other important languages in the world, too. Chinese is of course very important, especially in Asia. Arabic is widely spoken in many parts of Asia and Africa. Russian is spoken both in Europe and Asia. French is widely understood, not only in Europe, but also in parts of Canada, Africa and Asia. Spanish has a growing number of speakers all over the world, especially in Central and South Africa.
What language do people speak in the United Nations? There are so many different languages in the world, but they decide to use only six of them. They are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish. Everything spoken or written in one language is translated into the other five.
What will the world be like if cars can drive themselves? Imagine seeing an empty car passing by on its way to pick up its owner or a car full of passengers who are reading, listening to music or even sleeping. The passengers in the car needn't worry about the road ahead.
Well, all of this could be the future of driving. There are several companies, including Google, Tesla, Mercedes-Bens, Audi, BMW, Volvo and Toyota, working on driverless cars. They are now in the testing stages (阶段). If the tests are successful, these self-driving cars could be available very soon. But how is it possible for a car to drive itself?
Modern cars are able to take the place of drivers during certain situations. For example, they can park themselves or slow down when they detect (发现) objects nearby. They can also control the speed if there are dangerous condi-tions, such as snowy roads. Scientists and engineers believe that, with the help of wireless signals (无线),cameras and GPS, creating a safe self-driving car might be possible in ten to twenty years.
Self-driving cars may help cut down the number of serious accidents caused by careless drivers or dangerous condi-tions. However, there are still some people who do not like the idea. American lawyer, White Drake, for example, doesn't believe these cars are safe. He thinks the possibility of the technology making a mistake will be too high.
My sister Alli and I have been trying to get people to stop dropping cigarette butts (烟蒂) for seven years.
One day, we were walking in our hometown and saw hundreds of cigarette butts on the ground.
They made the town look so ugly that we decided to start a group to make people stop dropping butts. We called it "No Butts About It!"
At first, we drew pictures with "The Earth Is Not Your Ashtray (烟灰缸) " written on them. We put the pictures around our hometown--in parks, by beaches, and along roads.
We wanted to make people understand that dropping butts does harm to the environment. Most smokers don't think that dropping butts harms the earth.
Later, we wrote to companies and asked them for money to help us. We used the money to buy ashtrays to give smokers.
We wanted smokers to carry the ashtrays with them so they didn't have to drop butts.
At the moment, we are trying to get cigarette companies to put an ashtray in each pack of cigarettes.Many people have started to join our group since it began.And there are even groups in England, Australia and India !
Many newspapers have written about my sister and I over the last seven years. And we have won many prizes for our good work.
We just want to make the earth a better and cleaner place for animals, plants and people.
One day it will be.
