Alice was very excited. One of her favourite writers had just published a new book. She had saved up her money, and she was ready to buy the book this weekend. She talked about the book with her online chat(聊天)group. A lot of the other kids in the group were going to buy the book, too. In fact, that was the main thing everyone in the chat room was talking about one afternoon.

All of a sudden, Alice got a chat message from Ella, one of the kids in the chat room. The message said that Ella wanted to meet Alice at the bookstore. Then they could buy the new book together. Alice told her mum about the message, and her mum asked, "Do you know Ella from school?"

"No," Alice answered. "We've only chatted online. I don't think she goes to my school."

"Listen," Alice's mum was anxious and said, "I want you to have friends, but sometimes, people online aren't who they say they are. And when you're online, you can't always tell. So I don't think it's a good idea for you to meet this person."

"But, Mum," Alice said, "what if it is just a kid named Ella who wants to buy a book with me?"

Alice's mum considered that for a moment. Then she said, "Let's do this. Dad and I will go with you to the bookstore to buy the book with Ella. If Ella really is just a kid who wants to meet you in person, that's great. If not, ____."

Alice didn't like that idea. It made her feel like a baby. But she knew her mum was right about safety, so she finally nodded. Then she answered Ella's message. She told Ella that she and her parents would be at the bookstore the next afternoon.

The next day, Alice went to the bookstore with her mum and dad. When Ella never showed up and then disappeared from the chat room, Alice knew her parents were right. She was glad they were there to be with her.

Think of some great minds you like. You will probably find that their success didn't come easily. As "Father of Hybrid Rice(杂交水稻) ", Yuan Longping got over great difficulties and spent his whole life working to increase rice production and helping to feed the country with the largest population.

Wu Mengchao, the "Father of Chinese Hepatobiliary Surgery(肝胆外科) ", focused on saving people's lives for nearly eighty years. He did more than 16,000 operations during his life. Holding the surgeon's knife for such a long time deformed his fingers, but he still kept doing operations. Wu once said, "It would be my greatest happiness if I could work at the operating table until the last moment of my life."

In 1969, in order to solve the problem of treating malaria(疟疾), Tu Youyou, worked as head of a research team. They did different kinds of experiments. However, the results were not satisfactory. Instead of giving up, they kept trying. Finally, in 1972, they made it! In 2015, at the age of 85, she received the Nobel Prize.

Sometimes, their success was a surprise, even to themselves, even after a long time of their hard work. The famous scientist Alexander Fleming said, "When I woke up just after daybreak on 28th September, 1928, I just began another busy day with my research as I did many days and nights before. And I certainly didn't plan to make a great difference to all medicine by discovering the world's first antibiotic(抗生素). But I guess that was exactly what I did."

Some people only became successful after their deaths. The artist Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting all through his life and that was to a friend. But he kept painting and he painted more than 2,000 artworks in the following ten years. Now his paintings are very popular and they sell for millions of pounds.

One thing all these people have in common is that they never give up and stick to their goals no matter what happens.

A . Yuan Longping succeeded in feeding every country in the world. B . Tu Youyou's team spent about 3 years solving the malaria problem. C . Thomas Edison tried 10,000 ways before inventing the light bulb. D . Vincent Van Gogh painted 2,001 artworks during his whole life.

A . Goals can't be realized by everyone. B . Difficulties can always lead to greatness. C . Great success can be achieved naturally. D . Following your dreams can result in success.
  • 5.  阅读理解

Have you ever wondered why some people live long, but others don't? Many scientists have studied the mysteries of a long life for years.

Thousands of studies support the idea that a long life is influenced by two major things.

Genetics(遗传)is a major influence. Some people's bodies simply have special advantages. They have parents and grandparents who lived long lives. Their parents have passed on these positive genes to them. Howard Friedman is a health scientist. He wrote a book about living a long life. He says genetics explains about 1/3 of why people live to an old age.

The other major influence is basic health care. Good food, clean water and medical care all help a lot.

However, recently, scientists have found the way a person thinks about life can influence how long that person lives!

Many studies show that having a sense of purpose is important. For example, in Okinawa, Japan, plenty of people are over the age of 100. They have an idea called ikigai or life purpose. Scientists believe it's one of the reasons why Okinawa has so many long﹣lived people.

Staying active is the second important personal quality. It's not the same as doing difficult exercise. Instead, it's the most important to remain active in a natural way, doing something you enjoy.

Another quality is helping people. Feeling loved makes people feel good. However, loving and caring for others makes people live longer.

The final one is conscientiousness(尽责).Conscientious people are responsible. They plan for things and think about details. Some people believe being conscientious means living a boring life. However, it's not true.

People cannot change their genes. And it's difficult to improve a whole community's health care system. However, the new research results show there are things each of us can do to help improve how long we live.
