"Write letter A," I said, pointing to the letter written on the chalkboard. Students started to turn their heads with confused (困惑的) loos on their faces. They didn't speak English. How did they say "write" in Swahili? I was trying hard to remember that word from my Swahili 1 when a little girl started to gently touch my hair with a comforting smile. I suddenly felt 2 .
Taking my hand in hers, the little girl 3 me to the field to find the other kids playing. The kids had pure smiles. They made me 4 at home in this foreign country.
When I walked along the roads of Arusha, the women in scarves would stop washing the clothes, 5 and kindly say "mumbo". I would respond with "poa". I immersed (沉浸) 6 in the Tanzanian culture and didn't want to leave.
I remember 7 my trip, I walked downstairs to the kitchen, finding my mom cooking dinner I asked her, "Hey, Mom, can I go and be a(n) 8 in Africa this summer?" There was no answer. Did she 9 me? Smoke from the stove covered her face, which made it difficult to 10 her thoughts. 11 she lifted her head with shock; "What? Africa?"
My family don't like travelling. The only time I had ever been out of the country was to visit my mother's family in Brazil, 12 Africa is too far away for my mother to imagine. I explained the volunteer service trip to 13 kids in Africa and my strong wish to volunteer. She let out a sigh and then a encouraging 14 .
My journey to Tanzania gave me a chance to understand how different the life is in Tanzania compared to that in America, and how 15 I am with the good life I have. I'll never forget this experience.
People are always good at inventing things. Let's learn about some inventions that can help people a lot.
This is a wingsuit. It looks like a bat (蝙蝠) and allows people to fly. This kind of wingsuit is not something new, but the modern ones are better than ever. The price is coming down, too. Now you can buy one for 600 to 2,000 dollars. |
This is a new solar water distiller (太阳能净水装置) created by Gabriele Diamanti. It is for parts of the world where it's hard to get clean drinking water. You pour in salty water and let the sun do the work for a few hours. Then, you have clean water! Even so, they still need help to start producing the distiller. |
This is an "enable-talking glove". It was invented by some Ukrainian students to allow people with speech and hearing 'problems to talk with other people. The glove turns sign language into words, and then into spoken language. What a wonderful invention! It will help lots of people. |
Cameron was part of a team. The team invented the Deepsea Challenger Submarine. It can go into the lowest part of the sea. Last year, Cameron went down to the bottom of the Challenger :Deep (挑战者深渊), the deepest part of the sea in the world. He was the first person to do this alone there, and he stayed there for three hours, the longest time so far. |
Scientists in London say they've found the best diet (饮食) for both humans and the planet. If the world followed the "planetary (行星的) health" diet, the scientists said that each year more than 11 million early deaths could be prevented. For the health of the planet, they said the diet would save more land, water and animals.
This new food plan is the result of a three-year project. Tim Lang, a professor at Britain's University of London, said that the world's. population was expected to grow to 10. billion by 2050. If we want to feed everyone, we all need to change what we eat and the way we eat by improving food production and cutting down food waste. So, what do you eat on the "planetary health diet?
It mainly has to do with plants but it still has small amounts of dairy products (乳制品), fish and meat. The diet calls for cutting red meat and sugar by 50 percent and doubling the. amount of fruit, vegetables and legumes (豆类).
Food situations around the world are different. In certain areas, the diet would mean great changes. People in North America, for example, eat 6.5 times the recommended (推荐的) amount of red meat, while people in South Asia eat only half the amount suggested by the new "planetary health" diet.
Reaching that goal in vegetables would need big changes in other areas. In Sub-Saharan Africa, people eat 7.5 times the suggested amount of vegetables.
Walter Willett of Harvard University said that more than 800 million people around the world didn't get enough food while many more had very unhealthy diets. The scientists agree that their goal will be difficult to achieve. But for them, doing nothing is not a good choice. Willet said, "If we can't tally make it, it's better to try and get as close as we can."
As the epidemic (疫情) keeps improving, life in China is slowly returning to normal and people have once again started travelling.
From Shanghai to Anhui Province, main places of interest in China welcomed thousands of visitors last weekend. At the end of March a travel agency did a survey (调查) of 15,000 people across 100 cities in China. Some said they would be ready to travel in May. But most of the people, about 90%, would only choose to travel across the country.
According to the survey, about 61% of Chinese travelers said that they were going to travel again by August. Another small survey of 1,000 people got some similar results to the first survey. In this survey, about 77% of those people said that they'd choose to stay in China for their first trip after the epidemic.
Since the epidemic is getting worse and worse in the US, the UK and some other countries, international air travel has nearly stopped. It's hardly surprising that many Chinese travelers would choose to travel near home because China has successfully got the epidemic under control. Also, the two surveys showed that most travelers were pretty serious about safety and comfort on their trips. "Travelers always want to feel safe and hope there is no virus at each touching point along the journey," a survey leader said.
In addition, many travelers will choose short trips. In their opinion, if any problem happens, they can return home more quickly. According to the two surveys, the most popular way to travel will be independent, self-guide trips and smaller group tours. To stay away from risks, most travelers won't take the tour bus or ship to travel around.

Maggie Doyne, like many high school graduates, wasn't sure what to do with her life. So instead of going (straight) to college, she decided to take a gap year and travel.
Doyne arrived in western Nepal in 2006. The country had just ended a long war which left many homeless children. With no money for food or school, many lived on the streets.
One day, while (walk) down a road, Doyne saw a little girl breaking up rocks. She soon learned that 6-year-old Hema sold the rocks (support) her family. Sadness filled the (teenage) heart and she decided to pay for Mema's tuition (学费). Encouraged by the changes she saw about the child, Doyne had another idea. She thought, "Since I can help one child, not10?"
Then the young woman found a piece of land sale at US $5,
000. That was almost all the money she had saved from years of part-time jobs. She bought the land, and within two years the Kopila Valley Children's Home (appear).
In 2010, the Kopila Valley School (build). Now over 400 children and Doyne are having a (happy) life. Among them, over 350 children attend the school and over 50 children live in the home.
