This Thursday, across the US, kids are skipping school and going to work with their parents.

They'll be making copies, sending faxes and sweeping floors. This is because April 28 is Take Our

Sons and Daughters to Work Day all over the US. This holiday shows kids what it means to be a grown-up in the working world.

I still remember when this day started, I was very happy. Not only did I have the chance to miss school, but I also got to sit in my dad's taxi all day long and we would go to a restaurant for lunch.

But after only 20 minutes of driving around the city, I was very bored. I couldn't read my book in the car as I would get carsick and my dad didn't like to turn on the radio. I got hot and uncomfortable. People wouldn't get into his taxi because they thought he already had a passenger: me—so nothing happened. It seemed years before we went out for lunch. I actually started to miss school.

While the point of the day is to give kids a chance to experience real-life jobs and give them an idea of the possibilities for their futures, I got something completely different from the day. I learned to appreciate school. Where else do you get to play with your friends, do science experiments, read great books and write stories all in one day?

Just as you'll have to learn to love your job later in life, learn to love school now. If you don't already, try spending the day at work with your dad.

    1. (1) That day the writer was happy at first for the following reasons EXCEPT ____.
A . she didn't have to attend school B . she would work as a grown-up C . she could sit in her father's taxi the whole day D . she would go out for lunch with her father
    2. (2) Why didn't people get into the writer's father's taxi?
A . Because her father didn't like to turn on the radio. B . Because they thought the writer was a passenger. C . Because her father's car was hot and uncomfortable. D . Because her father didn't stop to take any passengers.
    3. (3) Which of the following is NOT the purpose of the "Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day"?
A . To teach kids to appreciate school. B . To give kids a chance to experience real-life jobs. C . To give kids an idea of the possibilities for their futures. D . To show kids what it means to be adults in the working world.
    4. (4) What did the writer learn that day?
A . Kids are unable to go on business. B . Working with dad is fun. C . It's necessary to make money. D . School life is much better.

When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.

People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else seems blurry. Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become near-sighted.

People who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm's length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.

Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people's eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.

Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle (角度). To prove this to yourself, look at an object out of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the object's relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.

    1. (1) The underlined word "blurry" in the second paragraph probably means ____.
      A . close B . far C . unreal D . unclear
    2. (2) When things far away seem unclear, one is probably____.
      A . near-sighted B . far-sighted C . astigmatic D . suffering from cataracts
    3. (3) Having two eyes instead of one is particularly useful for____.
      A . seeing at night B . seeing objects far away C . looking over a wide area D . judging distances
    4. (4) This passage is most probably taken from a____.
      A . math textbook B . science magazine C . cartoon story D . fairy tale

    The Last Leaf

At the top of the house, Sue and Johnsy had their own painting room where they worked together. In November, Johnsy became very ill, and was lying in her bed and looking through the window at the wall of the next house.

"Her only chance," the doctor said, "is for her to want to live."

After the doctor had gone, Sue came into Johnsy's room. Johnsy was looking out of the window and counting.

"Six," said Johnsy, " There goes another one. There are only five leaves left now."

    "Five what, dear?"

"Leaves, on the ivy vine(常春藤). When the last one falls, I'll die."

"Johnsy, dear," said Sue, "try to sleep. I must go and ask Behrman to be my model."

Old Behrman was a painter, who lived downstairs. He was past 60 and made a little money by being a model. He always wanted to paint a great work, but never began it. Behrman saw himself as a guard to protect the two young artists in the painting room upstairs.

Sue found Behrman and told him what Johnsy had said.

"What a foolish idea! I have never heard that people will die because of a falling leaf. Poor Johnsy!" After saying that, they went upstairs. They looked out of the window at the ivy vine. A cold rain was falling.

The next morning, there stood one ivy leaf.

"It's the last one," said Johnsy, "it will fall today, and I'll die."

At night, the wind began to blow. The next morning, the leaf was still there.

"Something has made that last leaf stay there. It's wrong to want to die," said Johnsy to Sue, "please bring me a little soup now."

The next day the doctor said to Sue,"She's out of danger. You won. Nutrition(营养) and care now—that's all."

That afternoon, Sue came to the bed where Johnsy lay.

"I have something to tell you," she said, "Mr. Behrman died today. He was ill only two days. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. We couldn't imagine where he had been on such a terrible night. Look out of the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn't you wonder why it never moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it's Behrman's great work —he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell."
