Alice had just been hurt by a rose. She cried and said to Grandpa, "How 16 something so pretty have thorns(刺)?"

"She was 20 that rose?" asked Alice.

However, she was often blamed (指责). As she grew older, she kept people away to 23 herself. In a way, she was like the rose, which has thorns 24 it can protect itself."
"I see. What happened then?"

Soon, they got married. Now she loves to have people around her and she especially loves her granddaughter." Then, she hugged Alice.
Feeling 29 , Alice asked, "You mean you were that girl, Grandma?"
Grandma took Alice's hand, put it against her face and said, "Yes. As you can 30 , there are no thorns left now ."
Laboratory work is your chance to learn science firsthand. It can be fun but you must be careful to prevent injury. Listen closely when your teacher reads and explains the rules before your first lab lesson.
LABORATORY RULES | |
Throughout the lesson | * Do not enter the science lab without the teacher's permission.· * No food or drinks are to be allowed in the science lab. |
Before the Experiment | *Read all instructions carefully before every experiment. *Prepare all chemistry instruments and arrange them so that you will not knock them over while doing the experiment. |
During the Experiment | *If you are unsure of how to use any instruments or how to operate, ask your teacher for help.· *Never smell or taste chemicals unless your teacher gives permission. |
After the Experiment | *Wash all instruments after use and return them to the places where they were. *Throw waste materials in proper waste baskets. |
First Aid | *Report all accidents to your teacher immediately. *If you spill any chemicals onto your body or clothing, wash with plenty of water and report to your teacher. |
This Thursday, across the US, kids are skipping school and going to work with their parents.
They'll be making copies, sending faxes and sweeping floors. This is because April 28 is Take Our
Sons and Daughters to Work Day all over the US. This holiday shows kids what it means to be a grown-up in the working world.
I still remember when this day started, I was very happy. Not only did I have the chance to miss school, but I also got to sit in my dad's taxi all day long and we would go to a restaurant for lunch.
But after only 20 minutes of driving around the city, I was very bored. I couldn't read my book in the car as I would get carsick and my dad didn't like to turn on the radio. I got hot and uncomfortable. People wouldn't get into his taxi because they thought he already had a passenger: me—so nothing happened. It seemed years before we went out for lunch. I actually started to miss school.
While the point of the day is to give kids a chance to experience real-life jobs and give them an idea of the possibilities for their futures, I got something completely different from the day. I learned to appreciate school. Where else do you get to play with your friends, do science experiments, read great books and write stories all in one day?
Just as you'll have to learn to love your job later in life, learn to love school now. If you don't already, try spending the day at work with your dad.
When we see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we realize how important our eyes are.
People who are near-sighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Everything else seems blurry. Many people who do a lot of work, such as writing, reading and sewing become near-sighted.
People who are far-sighted suffer from just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty in reading a book unless they hold it at arm's length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses, too.
Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. They have what is called astigmatism (散光). This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people's eyes become cloudy because of cataracts (白内障). Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them.
Having two good eyes is important for judging distances. Each eye sees things from a slightly different angle (角度). To prove this to yourself, look at an object out of one eye; then look at the same object out of your other eye. You will find the object's relation to the background and other things around it has changed. The difference between these two different eye views helps us to judge how far away an object is. People who have only one eye cannot judge distance as people with two eyes.
The Last Leaf
At the top of the house, Sue and Johnsy had their own painting room where they worked together. In November, Johnsy became very ill, and was lying in her bed and looking through the window at the wall of the next house.
"Her only chance," the doctor said, "is for her to want to live."
After the doctor had gone, Sue came into Johnsy's room. Johnsy was looking out of the window and counting.
"Six," said Johnsy, " There goes another one. There are only five leaves left now."
"Five what, dear?"
"Leaves, on the ivy vine(常春藤). When the last one falls, I'll die."
"Johnsy, dear," said Sue, "try to sleep. I must go and ask Behrman to be my model."
Old Behrman was a painter, who lived downstairs. He was past 60 and made a little money by being a model. He always wanted to paint a great work, but never began it. Behrman saw himself as a guard to protect the two young artists in the painting room upstairs.
Sue found Behrman and told him what Johnsy had said.
"What a foolish idea! I have never heard that people will die because of a falling leaf. Poor Johnsy!" After saying that, they went upstairs. They looked out of the window at the ivy vine. A cold rain was falling.
The next morning, there stood one ivy leaf.
"It's the last one," said Johnsy, "it will fall today, and I'll die."
At night, the wind began to blow. The next morning, the leaf was still there.
"Something has made that last leaf stay there. It's wrong to want to die," said Johnsy to Sue, "please bring me a little soup now."
The next day the doctor said to Sue,"She's out of danger. You won. Nutrition(营养) and care now—that's all."
That afternoon, Sue came to the bed where Johnsy lay.
"I have something to tell you," she said, "Mr. Behrman died today. He was ill only two days. His shoes and clothing were wet through and icy cold. We couldn't imagine where he had been on such a terrible night. Look out of the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn't you wonder why it never moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it's Behrman's great work —he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell."

Dear Lin Tao,
It's a long time since I (写)to you last time. How is everything going with you?
To tell you the(事实),I'm having a hard time with my parents these days. I didn't do a good job at my schoolwork and (未能及格)some of the exams last term. So they want to control every part of my life. They think that as a(第九)grader, I should spend all my time studying . What's your advice?
For the coming winter vacation, I decided to travel around and I couldn't wait to enjoy some beautiful (奇观) . But it will be replaced by(待在)at home because of the serious situation of COVID-19 in my country. How boring it will be if I am unable to play(外面)and stay at home all day long, although I can do something at home on my own too! What do you think of being home alone? What do you always do at home alone?
Recently I've bought a drone made in China and made some(视频)with it. High technologies in China have developed rapidly these years. And I'm also interested in some other great Chinese inventions,(包括) WeChat, Alipay, shopping online, shared bikes, health code and so on. Among all of them, which do you think is the most (受欢迎的)?
Hopefully, you can give me some advice and tell me what you think.
Looking forward to your reply!

Have you noticed some dogs putting their heads out of cars? It is really bad habit. It is said that dogs like to do so they are curious about what they see. Many dogs are not tall enough (have) a clear view of the outside world from the front seat, and most dogs are too short to see (clear) from the back seat. (try) to put their heads out of the window is a good way to check out their surrounding and enjoy a nice cool breeze the same time.
It is actually not a good idea for dogs to do so. your dog becomes overexcited and falls or jumps from your moving car, it could injure(弄伤) (it). Some dust in the wind can make some dogs sick. High-speed wind can damage a (dog) ear. Plus, dogs can (hurt) by flying stones or other things. So, be careful when you take a dog with you in a car.
It is said that the eyes are the windows to our soul. However, to have healthy eyes, you have to look after them properly. Your eyes need everyday attention.
First, you have to pay more attention to your diet. Eat more fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, eggs and milk. It's good for your eyes. Also, a regular amount of vitamins a and B2 should also be taken
Second, you must have regular and sound sleep. This relaxes the eye muscles(肌肉) and gives them the rest they need. Sleep can help the body repair its tired tissue(组织). You should sleep for at least seven hours every day. Loss of sleep can give you dark circles under your eyes.
Next, it's necessary for you to exercise you eyes every day. Bink(眨眼) your eyes at regular (有规律的)periods to keep your eyes moist(湿润的).
Last, you should treat your eyes correctly. For example, if you get something in your eye, don't start rubbing(揉)it. Don't read or write in poor or bright sunlight because sunlight can cause eye tiredness. Remember to use sunglasses to stop the sun from shining directly in your eyes. Too much reading, writing, watching television or working on a computer can also cause eye tiredness, so rest is required.
