The skill for making the Jiangzhou Chengni inkstone（締州澄泥砚台） goes back to the Han Dynasty.However，it was lost at the end of the Ming Dynasty.
In 1986，Lin Yongmao and his son Lin Tao decided to bring this ancient skill back to life.
They learned how to make the inkstone from historical books.But bringing it back to life was not easy.They walked over the Fenhe riverbed and collected all kinds of mud （泥土） to find the best one.To know the best heat for firing clay （烧制黏士），they spent many nights keeping a close watch on the kiln（窑）.
After trying many times，they finally made three Chengni inkstones in 1991.
Lin Tao said it takes over a year and more than 10 steps to make a Chengni inkstone.One of the key steps is mud filtering （过滤）. "The mud needs to be filtered over and over again till it feels like flour （面粉）. This is to make sure the texture （纹理） of clay is right，" he said.
Lin Tao has also made many modern designs.For example ， he painted patterns of the Bird's Nest in Beijing on his inkstones.
