I like to walk in the early morning with my dog. On this fantastic Saturday1 , I was enjoying the quiet morning and beautiful weather and loving life while my dog Jett and I were making our2 rounds(巡回).
At one home I3 , I noticed a newspaper that was lying near the edge(边缘)of the street4 near the doorstep. Thinking I would make someone else' s life a little easier, I decided to5 the paper and gently throw it towards their door. 6 , my aim was way off and instead of landing on the doorstep the paper flew in the7 direction and landed on the roof of a truck in the driveway. No one saw it but me and I burst out(爆发)laughing before I realized what I had done had made the problem8 .
I took a look at my watch and found it was near 5 a m. It was too 9 to knock on the door and tell the homeowner where their paper was. So, I walked home, got dressed and went to the grocery store to10 it right.
I returned a little later with a new newspaper and a basket of fresh strawberries and11 the homeowner in the front yard with some friends. With a deep breath I stepped forward and said " I hope you have a great sense of humour " . 12 , they did. After I explained what13 just now, they all laughed loudly and of course it really made me14 .
I couldn' t help but smile all day. I' ve heard it said, " Character is what you do when no one is looking " . But in fact there are too many people who think the only thing that' s15 is to get by, and that the only thing that' s wrong is to get caught.

Today I arrived at my friend Worawut' s house outside of Bangkok for the holidays. His family was doing a spring cleaning of their pretty wooden house in preparation for the spring festival of Songkran. They put their hands together to greet me with a traditional gesture (手势)called the wai. Worawut translated their words for me.

The women cooked Thai food for the next day' s ceremonies(仪式). That smelled wonderful! Under the bright sun, we men went to the river and brought lots of sand to the village wat(寺庙). The wat was a beautiful Buddhist building where the monks (和尚)lived. We left the sand near the wat. Worawut said I' d soon find out why.
April 14
We all dressed up and went to the village wat. The monks waited with their bowls at a long table. We filled their bowls with rice and all kinds of delicious food. Everyone smiled and music played as the monks ate.
After that, we attended the bathing ceremony. We poured water over stone Buddhas. Young people poured some sweet smelling water into the hands of older people to show respect for them.
Outside, everyone used the sand we had brought to make sand pagodas(佛塔). We put flowers, fags, and stones on ours. It was beautiful!

Today was the last day of the festival, and Worawut told me to get ready for some water throwing. We had a great time. Everyone in the village was throwing water. On such a hot day, the water felt really good. I can' t wait to come back next year!

It was the beginning of the school holidays and Benny was looking forward to spending time with his friends from his neighbourhood. He was very upset when his mother told him that he was going to stay at his grandparents house as both she and his father were going on a business trip. He had no friends there and had no computer games to play. However, he had no say in the matter.
Benny loved his grandparents but they were too old to take him out or play games with him. His younger sister was not interested in the same things as he was. She only liked to play with her toys. At the very beginning, Benny killed time by doing his holiday homework. However, after a few days, he finished all his holiday homework. Soon he got restless.
One day, Benny was feeling very bored. Suddenly an idea flashed across his mind. He decided to take a bus back to his neighbourhood to find his friends. So when his grandparents were taking naps (小睡), he ran out of the house. This was a whole new experience for him. He had never taken public transport on his own before. He felt very grown-up. However, on the bus ride home. he fell asleep. By the time he woke up, he was in a strange place. This worried him. He got off the bus at once and borrowed. the telephone of a nearby shop to call his grandfather.
An hour later, Benny' s grandfather arrived in a taxi. Benny was silent on the way back. He was feeling very guilty(内疚的). He knew that what he did must have caused his grandparents a lot of worry. He said sorry to his grandparents. Seeing his regret, they decided to give him a second chance an nd did not report the matter to his parents. Benny was relieved.
In 1962. astronaut John Glenn became the first American to orbit(沿轨道运行) the earth. In1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon. Thanks to African-american women mathematicians(数学家) like Katherine Johnson, these historic events became possible. Johnson worked for the US air and space programmes for 33 years. But not many people knew about Johnson before the movie Hidden Figures came out. The movie tells the story of Johnson and other great black women mathematicians.
To truly understand Johnson' s achievements, it important to understand the world she lived in. She graduated from West Virginia State College in 1937. At the time, only about 10 percent of women got college degrees. Johnson went into teaching, one of the few jobs that were open to women.
In 1953, she got a job at the Langley Research Centre, in Virginia. That was an aircraft(飞船)research centre in the US. Back then, computers weren' t widely used yet. Instead. the Maths needed to design, test and fly planes was done by " human computers " like Johnson. These women used pencils, simple adding machines. and their Maths talents to make those difficult calculations(计算). Also, when Johnson started working at Langley, she and her black co-workers were kept separate from the white women who did the same job. Even so, her talents made her stand out. Johnson was soon chosen to join a group of white men and women. They later helped send the first Americans into space. Johnson says her biggest achievement is getting the astronauts home from the moon safely.
Johnson, now 100 years old, is proud of what she has done for the space programmes. " I happily went to work every day for 33 years, " she says.

I have a dog and his name is Coco. Yesterday I walked him after school. Suddenly I had a stomachache while we (play)in a park. I rushed to the restroom and ordered him to wait for me outside. But after I came out, Coco was missing. I was so anxious(忧虑的) that I asked every person passing by Luckily, I (tell)that someone saw a dog wandering (游荡)in the central part of the park, and that I should go there. But after I arrived, I just saw a notice on a board. After (read )it, I realized that a man had found Coco, but it was not convenient for him (wait)for a long time, so he had to leave his address to let the owner know. Twenty minutes later, I (reach )the mans house and knocked at the door. A man came out. I asked politely, " Excuse me, I want to know if you (take)my dog to your house? " The man brought Coco out. Then he requested that I shouldn' t let the dog wander around alone. He said it was not only for the safety of the dog, but also for the safety of others.
Many people spend their vacations doing nothing on a beach. but Kirsty Ross wanted to do something different. " I spent three weeks working in the hot sun digging to find pieces of old cups and plates, " she says.
" I worked really hard all day and I slept in a tent at night. My friends thought I was crazy, but I had an amazing time. It was my best vacation ever! "
Kirsty was working for a volunteer programme in Tunisia in North Africa. Groups of twenty-five young volunteers worked together on archaeological sites(考古遗址) to find important information about the past. The volunteers had to be very careful, because it was important not to damage (损坏)the things they found. Many of them worked at Tunisia' s biggest archaeological site in Carthage, and some of them worked in other important sites in the country. Kirsty explains why she chose this vacation. " I' ve always been interested in history, and Tunisia has a lot of very important archaeological sites. There were people living in Carthage as early as 3, 000 years ago. I love being in places that are so old. It is exciting to find pots and other things that people used every day. "
It was harder for Kirsty than for some of the others. " I come from Alaska, which is a cold place, " she says. " It was hard for me to work under the hot North African sun. But it was a wonderful chance to meet people from other countries and to learn about the past. It changed my life. Now I' m hoping to study archaeology in college. "
