Mark's class planted fruits and vegetables in the school's garden. Mark liked watering them and he especially liked watching the1grow. The school used the fruits and vegetables in the school dining hall. Most students in his class felt2that they would eat something planted by themselves.
Every morning Mark stopped to check the plants. One morning he saw something3. He hurried into his classroom. "Mr. James!" he shouted to his teacher. "The beans are covered with a kind of insect! I think they're eating4!" Hearing what he said, Mr. James just smiled. He showed Mark a small5"Don't worry, Mark. I think I know what the problem is. There's something in this box that might be6for this."

When I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive.
After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels( 通 道 ). I was very surprised that each one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.
On the fifth day something terrible happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Though the ants remained alive after the earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up to build their tunnels. They began to carry bodies to a corner of the farm.
My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not understand why tunnels were gone.
Although much time has passed, I still kept thinking of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.
Over the years, I came to understand the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work.
But there was an even larger lesson that I did not learn until I met my problem recently: Adversity is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot lose our heart when we are sad. We have to know that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another.
Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.
a. Never give up. b. Respect for other's hard work.
c. The importance of teamwork. d. A good beginning is half done.
①More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today teaching tools such as PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) are used in a lot of courses, including language, history and science.
②Many teachers are supporters(支持者) of using PDA in language learning. They say that students now have a lot more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos, students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.
③The teachers also say that PDA allows students to learn without their teachers' help. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using PDA is especially helpful to students who are learning a language at different paces.
④The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using PDA is a more enjoyable way to learn. The class has become much more interesting. By using PDA, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are stored in their PDAs and easy to find.
⑤Many parents complain that technologies such as PDA are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use PDA to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. If a student spends more time watching videos on an PDA, he will have fewer chances to have face-to-face communication with others.
⑥Education needs to make changes with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when PDA and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
Mr. Dawson was a strange old man. Kids knew not to go into his yard to pick an apple, even off the ground, because he would come after you with his stick.
One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was going to stay all night with her friend Amy. They had to walk by Dawson's house on the way to Amy's house. Like most of the children, Janet was afraid because of the stories she'd heard about the old man.
▲ Still Janet was growing more nervous with each step closer to the old man's house. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual
frown (皱眉), but when he saw it was Amy, a broad smile changed his entire face as he said, "Hello, Miss Amy. I see you've got a little friend with you today."
Amy smiled back and told him her friend Janet came and they were going to listen to music and play games. Dawson told them that sounded fun, and offered them each a fresh picked apple off his tree. They gladly accepted. Dawson had the best apples in town.
When they went far away, Janet asked Amy, "Everyone says he's the meanest man in town. How come was he so nice to us?"
Amy explained that when she first started walking past his house, he wasn't very friendly and she was afraid of him, but she supposed he was wearing an invisible (it means "can not be seen") smile.
"An invisible smile?" questioned Janet.
"Yes," answered Amy. "My grandma told me if I supposed I wasn't afraid and thought he was smiling an invisible smile at me and I smiled back at him, sooner or later he would really smile."
a. Janet got more and more nervous.
b. Amy shared her own experience.
c. Janet and Amy walked by Dawson's house.
d. Mr. Dawson gave Janet and Amy each an apple.
e. Janet and Amy stopped to talk with Mr. Dawson.

It was nearly dark. The sun was dropping down the mountains. Little Tom came back home his head down, looking really sad.
"What's the matter, Tom? How was your trip?" his mother asked with big smile. "I failed, Mom. Although the mountain was so high and(fill) with stones on the way, I still went ahead. But I felt very tired and it was so late I had to come back." Tom (cry) loudly. "It doesn't matter, you are only 14 years old after all. You will have another chance." his mother said. "But(stand) at the top of the mountain is my dream!" Tom said.
His father came over and asked, "Did you see the green trees on (you) way to the mountain?" "Sure." Tom replied. "Did you feel the (beautiful) of nature, my dear?" his father asked. "Of course." Tom answered. "Did you notice other people on the way?" his father asked. "Yes! A little girl followed her mother (happy)!" Tom answered.
