 Living in a small community, Mrs Meredith was a1  woman and she spent lots of time visiting the poor.  

 One morning, Mrs Meredith told her children about a family she had cared about for a long time. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, and their little boy. The wife couldn't go out to work2 she had to take care of her husband. It was hard for the family to live on3 own and they needed all kinds of help.  

 The little boy Bernard, who hoped to get some money to help his family, had4 Mrs Meredith very much.  

 "I wish you could see him," she said to her children — John, Harry, and Clara. "He is such a5 to his mother. He wants to make money, but I don't see what he can do. " 

 Then she left. 6  that, the children sat thinking about Bernard. "I wish we could help him," said Clara.  

 "So do I" said Harry. "We must have a try. " 

 For some moments, John said nothing, but7  , he cried, "I've got an idea!" 

 The other children jumped up with all attention. "Let me tell you8 we can do," said John. "Maybe we can make popcorn, put it into paper bags, and Bernard can9 it" 

 Mrs Meredith thought this idea was a good one, too. She then ordered a household popcorn machine. Later, Mrs Meredith, together with her10 children, paid another visit to the family and told them about the popcorn plan. Needless to say, they were deeply moved. A few days later, the11 was sent to Mrs Meredith's doorstep.  

 With everything ready, Bernard started his new12 . At the beginning, it was a hard time13 Bernard. Luckily, Bernard did quite well. He carried the popcorn on his small bike, going from door to door to sell it. People were surprised to see such a little boy selling popcorn at their doors, but finally almost everyone would buy14  . Things were getting better. And Bernard knew that it was15 that makes the world go round. Bernard felt it deep in his heart.  

 I think that a great friend is a great artist who can change my feeling about life greatly. When I talk about the person who influenced me most, I must think of my best friend quickly.  

 When I was in my university, one of my classmates sat beside me. His name is Wang Tao. He is my unforgettable friend in my life. He is good at study and handsome. Everyone knows that he is a geniusof my university.  

 He is kind-hearted and is always ready to help others. But he doesn't like others to praise him, because he thinks what he did is common. There is an old saying: A friend in need is a friend indeed. Wang Tao sets a good example in many parts in my life.  

 I remembered that my maths was mediocre at that time, but he was excellent in solving maths questions. He often received high scores. Of course, I wished I could reach his level. Since we talked all day long, he was patient and polite to answer my maths questions. Slowly, I made great progress in maths. I passed the exam finally. Then we became friends naturally. And now, I still remember his strong will to study.  

 We know that we live in a society, so we all need a lot of friends. There are two kinds of friends, good and bad. Bad friends may make our life failed, while good ones make our life successful. To me, Wang Tao is a very good friend. I learned so many advantages from him, and I changed more and more excellently.  

 We separated three months ago. Now I miss him very much, and I hope that our friendship will continue to be just as strong after we graduate.

 Scientists have long known that eating late at night can make us put on weight. But now a new study has shown that late​ night eating can also have a bad influence on our brains—it might hurt our ability to learn new things and store memories.  

 "We believe that late ​night eating may have an influence on the parts of the brain that control learning and memory，" Dawn Loh, PhD, a project scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, said, "We believe the timing of when we eat may be the main cause of the damaged memory. " 

 For the study, the researchers did an experiment. They looked at two groups of mice with strict feeding plans. For two weeks, the mice were allowed to eat either during the time when they are usually the most active, or during the time when they usually sleep. The mice received the same amount of sleep and calories.  

 Then the researchers tested the brains of the mice. In one test, the scientists tried to find out whether the mice had a good memory by putting the mice in a room connected to an electric shock for some time. The researchers noticed that, when the mice were put in the room again after 24 hours had gone by, those mice that ate when they should have been sleeping were less scared than those mice that ate during usual hours. It means that they didn't remember.  

 So think twice before the midnight snack—it might be bad for more than your weight.  

 Michael sat on the ground outside the house, holding a four-leaf clover. Michael had believed that four-leaf clovers brought good luck, but he started questioning that kind of power.  

 Michael was 11. Two months ago, his parents died in an accident. Luckily, Jill adopted him. Michael had a disliking for Jill. She always made him do boring housework. Michael didn't feel like a son to her at all. He often cried secretly. He had ever been working on a plan for two weeks - to run away and never return! 

 Until he heard Jill park her car in the garage.  

 Jill was standing in front of him with a small dog in her hand. She put the dog down. Michael knelt down to pet him. "Is the dog for me? Michael asked.  

 Jill laughed "Of course! You're the slowest little boy ever! I've got you a little puppy to make you work faster. " 

 Michael couldn't see how a dog would help with his housework, but he thought it would be nice to have a friend. He saw a big, black spot on his back. "I'll name him Spot!" 

 "Spot, Spot. Silly name, but It'll do. Now, you'd better clean the bathroom and finish your homework before dinner is ready. " 

 Michael ran to the bathroom with Spot. The moment Michael started working, Spot ran about excitedly as if they were playing a game. "Hey, stop! 'Michael gently shouted at his naughty friend, not realizing he was doing faster than usual. The same "miracle" happened when he tried to finish his homework. Spot patiently waited by his desk, his round black eyes looking at Micheal as if saying, " Hurry up, and play with me!" Jill looked at them from the kitchen with a smile.  

 Two weeks passed, and____, he was happy again. A smile was always on his face Wherever he went, Spot would follow him. He became more polite, confident and outgoing, Jill found a small card with four-leaf clover. It says. "Thank you, Mom. May good luck always be with you Love, Michael!"

 Bobo's love for singing Chinese songs has won the  (心) of me. From his videos, I also know more about African people and their  (日常的) life.
