Bertie knew there was something in the wind. His mother had been sad in recent days, not sick, just strangely sad. The lion had just lain down beside him, his head warm on Bertie's feet when Father cleared his throat and began, "You'll soon be eight, Bertie. A boy needs a proper education. We've found the right place for you, a school near Salisbury in England. "

His heart filled with a terrible fear. All Bertie could think of was his white lion. "But the lion, " he cried, "What about the lion?"

"I'm afraid there's something else I have to tell you, " his father said. Looking across at Bertie's mother, he took a deep breath. Then he told Bertie he had met a circus (马戏团) owner from France, who was now inAfrica looking for lions to buy. He would come to their farm in a few days.

"No! You can't send him to a circus!" said Bertie. "People will come to see him. He'll be shut in a cage. I promised him he never would be. And they will laugh at him. He'd rather die if he loses his pride!" But as Bertie looked across the table at them, he knew their minds were quite made up.

Bertie felt completely hurt. He waited until he heard his father's deep breathing next door. With his white lion, he walked downstairs quietly in his pajamas, took down his father's gun from the case and stepped out into the night. He ran and ran till his legs could run no more. As the sun came up over the grassland, he climbed to the top of a hill and sat down, his arms round the lion's neck. The time had come.

"Be wild now, " he whispered. "You've got to be wild. Don't ever come home. All my life I'll think of you. I promise I will. "He put his head down in the lion's neck. Then, Bertie climbed down the hill and walked away.

When he looked back, the lion was still sitting there watching him; but then the lion stood up, yawned, ran down after him. Bertie shouted at him, but he kept coming. He threw sticks. He threw stones. Nothing worked.

There was only one thing left to do. With tears filling his eyes and his mouth, he lifted the gun and fired over the lion's head.

Everyone likes having money to spend. In fact, most of us wish we had a lot more money than we already have. Today, I want to share three common money mistakes that teenagers make and suggest ways to avoid them.

One common mistake teenagers make is underestimating(低估) the real cost of purchases(购买品), especially on expensive items like mobile phones. Maybe you've saved up $2, 000, so you plan to buy a phone that costs exactly $2, 000. However, there are other costs to consider, like monthly service fees of $200 or more. Make sure you always do enough research before buying anything. This will help you avoid overspending.

A second common mistake teenagers make is failing to develop a savings plan. We usually spend everything we have. Many of us even daydream about how we're going to spend money that we don't even have yet. Start saving money today by making a written plan. Discover how much money you expect to get over a period of time and then keep part of it, perhaps ten percent, for savings first before spending anything. This will help you to save up for special purchases.

Finally, teenagers also make the mistake of impulse buying. We see something we like and buy it without thinking it through. This often happens when we're out shopping with friends for fun. To avoid impulse buying, just think of the things you are saving up to buy before going out shopping. While shopping, carry only a small amount of money with you.

If you want to make sure that you have the money you need when you really need it, try to avoid these money mistakes. In this way, you'll be able to keep more money in your pocket with much less effort than you think.

    1. (1) How does the writer organize Paragraph 2?
      A . By asking a question. B . By giving an example. C . By listing a reason. D . By telling a story.
    2. (2) What can teenagers do to save up money?
A . Make a savings plan. B . Save all the money they have. C . Keep their dreams. D . Discover how much one should pay.
    3. (3) Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?  (P= Paragraph)
      A . B . C . D .
    4. (4) What is the purpose of this text?
A . To make a request for pocket money. B . To ask teenagers to stop buying things. C . To give advice on using money wisely. D . To offer tips about making more money.
  • 12. 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项 (A、B、C和D) 中选出最佳选项。

A myth (传说) is something that is not correct, but many people believe. There are a lot of myths about the human brain.

One of the biggest myths is that we only use 10 percent of our brains. The next part of the myth is that if we can learn to use the rest of our brains, we'll be much smarter. People say this all the time, but it's not true! The truth is that although we don't know everything about the human brain, we know that each part of it has an important function (功能). Modern scientists think the "10 percent myth" ridiculous (荒谬的).

The other most popular myth is about being "right brained" or "left brained". According to this myth, people who use the right side of their brains are more artistic and creative. People who use the left side of their brains are better at math and science. This is as popular as the 10 percent myth, and it's also wrong. In 2013, a study at anAmerican university examined the right brain and left brain myth. According to the study, we use both sides of our brains equally.

It's true that we use different parts of our brains for different things. We use our left side for language more, and our right side when we need to pay attention. But there is no evidence (证据) that creative people use the right side more, or that scientific people use the left side more.

We've talked about myths, so let's look at a few interesting facts about the brain. First of all, the brain feels no pain. Second, about 75 percent of the brain is made of water. It's also the fattest organ (器官) in your body. Here's one more interesting fact about the brain. Around the time you turn 18 years old, it stops growing.

    1. (1) According to the first myth mentioned, how many percent of our brains is un-used?
      A . 10%. B . 30%. C . 50%. D . 90%.
    2. (2) According to the facts mentioned in the passage, who may use the left brain more?
A . Robert, who is learning English. B . Kate, who is drawing pictures. C . Jenny, who is creative. D . Jacob, who is good at maths.
    3. (3) Which of the following is TRUE about the human brain?
A . It is growing all life long. B . About three quarters of it is made of water. C . Some parts of it are not used at all. D . The right side is used more by artists.
    4. (4) What does the passage mainly talk about?
A . The growing of the brain. B . Different functions of the brain. C . Myths and facts about the brain. D . Right brain and left brain.
