    When Abraham Lincoln was just a boy, he had to help his father to look after their farm. It was hard work and there wasn't anything interesting for him. Abraham wanted to go to school, but there was no school there. He was sad most of the time.

    Mrs. Lincoln loved the boy very much. She tried her best to make Abraham happy. One morning she got up early and went to the town. It was a long way so it took her a long time to get there. She bought something there and went back. It was late in the evening when she got home.

    The next morning Mrs. Lincoln said to Abraham, "Today is your birthday, so we're going to have a party." She put some food on the table, and then brought out a present.

     "A book!" Abraham cried. It was an old book, but he liked it. A smile came on his face. He looked up at Mrs. Lincoln and said, "Thank you, Mom."

People from Europe (欧洲）and America brought Africans (非洲人)to America as slaves (奴隶) before and during the 19th century. These Africans brought their music with them. After the American Civil War (美国内战), the African-American people in the U. S. A were hot slaves. Their music became famous. It started in the south, then it traveled to the North (北方). Music became blues (布鲁斯) and then jazz.

Blues and jazz became very popular in the 20th century. A person sang the blues when he or she felt sad. Usually, he or she lost something—a person or maybe money or their work. Blues express (表达) sad feelings, sometimes in a funny way. People played blues first with only one or two instruments, for example, a guitar, a harmonica (口琴) or a piano. Sometimes they sang without any instruments. Some famous blues musicians are Bessie Smith, John Lee Hooker and B. B. King.

Jazz came soon after blues. Composers used more musical instruments. Jazz can be happier and is often faster. Some famous jazz musicians are Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Wanton Marsalis.

Musicians change the music to show their emotions(情感) when they play blues and jazz. They play the music differently each time. Today people all over the world still like to listen to blues and jazz because all people have strong feelings sometimes.

Everybody makes decisions in daily life. They can be as important as what you will do in the future or as simple as what you will eat for breakfast. Any decision could be the turning point of your life.

I made an important decision when I was in Junior 3.

Before I made that decision I was one of the boys who tried too hard to act as an adult. I didn't know that only kids want to show themselves as adults.

I didn't listen to my parents and teachers, and my grades became poor. Then came the high school entrance exam.

At the turning point of my life, my mom wanted to have a conversation with me. I wanted to turn it down but when I looked at her eyes, I felt I couldn't refuse. Instead of asking me to study hard, to my surprise, Mom just asked what I wanted to do in the future. Without thinking too much, I just said I would like to study hard.

Mom smiled and asked again: " I asked: what do you want to do?"

I never seriously thought about the question. So, I kept silent.

"Whether you want to go on studying or enter the society," she went on, "it is your own decision. Your life ought to be decided by you, not by anyone else, including me." After saying that, she had tears in her eyes.

For the first time in my life I was asked to make my own decision. I sat in my chair and thought about myself, my life and what kind of person I wanted to become.

It took me what seemed to be ages to make the biggest decision so far in my life—I wanted to be a man who makes a difference in the world. To achieve that, I needed to study hard.

The path to my future became clear to me. I didn't act rebelliously(叛逆地) any more. With passion (激情) in my heart, I studied hard.

Now, I'm 17 and I'm in one of the best schools in my city, in one of the best classes at the school and I am one of the best students in the class.

Thanks to that decision, I have become what I am today.
