Honolulu is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of Hawaii, which is located in the Pacific Ocean. It is along the southeast coast of the island of Oahu, and is the westernmost and southernmost major U.S. city. It is a center of international business, finance, hospitality, and military defense in both the state and Oceania. The city has a mix of various Asian, Western, and Pacific cultures.

Temperatures change little throughout the months, with average high temperatures of 27–32 ℃ and average lows of 18–24 ℃ throughout the year. However, both seasons experience a similar number of rainy days. Light showers occur in summer, while heavier rain falls during winter.

As the largest city and airport in the Hawaiian Islands, Honolulu acts as a natural gateway to the islands' large tourism industry, which brings $10 billion annually and contributes most to the local economy. Honolulu's location in the Pacific also makes it a large business and trading center. Other important aspects of the city's income include military defense, research and development, and manufacturing.

Sunny beaches and a sky-blue sea coast make Honolulu a holiday paradise. Honolulu is not only a place of wonderful sights; it is also a shopping paradise. The world's largest open-air shopping center, Ala Moana Shopping Center is located here, and many international brands and merchandise is represented here. However, it might take tourists lots of time to get there since Honolulu has been ranked as the worst traffic congestion. Currently, there is still no railway system in Honolulu. People often ask if they should share their beds with pets. Before we get to that, let's think about the other side: Is sleeping with you good for your pet?

"In general, it is a very good thing for animals to sleep with their people." said Dr. Dana Varble, the chief veterinary officer for the North American Veterinary Community. "Pets who share their human's bed tend to have a higher trust level and a tighter bond* with the humans that are in their lives. Dogs and cats who are more closely bonded with their humans get additional health benefits."

Now let's turn to you—is it good for you to sleep with a pet? Experts have traditionally said no because you might not get quality shut-eye. "Animals may move, bark and interrupt your sleep. Sleep in dogs and cats is not continuous and they will inevitably get up and walk on the bed, stepping on people. All of that activity will lead to sleep fragmentation*," said Dr. Vsevolod Polotsky, director of sleep research and a professor in the department of medicine.

"These micro awakenings," which can happen without your awareness, "are disruptive because they pull you out of deep sleep," said Kristen Knutson, an associate professor of neurology and preventive medicine.

That may be true for many of us, but recent studies have shown that pets in the bedroom could be beneficial for some of us. "People with depression* or anxiety may benefit from having their pet in the bed because they may feel that soft friend decreases their anxiety," said sleep specialist Dr. Raj Dasgupta, an assistant professor of clinical medicine.

The Mayo Clinic's Center for Sleep Medicine in Phoenix found over half of pet owners seen in the clinic allowed their pet to sleep in the bedroom—and the most found their pet "unobtrusive or even beneficial to sleep." About 20% however, did believe their pets made their sleep worse. Children may benefit from sleeping with a pet as well. A 2021 study asked teenagers ages 13 to 17 to wear sleep trackers for two weeks and then undergo a sleep test. About a third of the kids slept with a pet, the study noted, which didn't appear to affect the quality of their rest.

    1. (1) According to Paragraph 2, animals will ________ if they sleep with their people.
A . be closer to their owners B . have a much deeper sleep C . be more active in daily life D . have more health problems
    2. (2) What does the underlined word "interrupt" probably mean?
      A . control B . disturb C . benefit D . improve
    3. (3) Who would probably agree to the idea "It is good for you to sleep with a pet"?
      A . Dr. Dana Varble. B . Dr. Vsevolod Polotsky. C . Kristen Knutson. D . Dr. Raj Dasgupta.
    4. (4) What can we learn from the passage?
A . Most pets are not allowed to sleep in the owners' bedroom. B . Children are always affected when they sleep with their pets. C . Sleeping with pets has little effect to people during a deep sleep. D . Pets in the bed perhaps benefit the people who are often depressed.

Just before Christmas in 1944, a letter arrived at our house in Philadelphia. The postmark was from Tuskegee, Alabama, so we all knew who it was from. We quickly gathered around my mother as she opened it at the kitchen table.

    My Dear mother,

I did not get the leave I expected for Christmas. I will miss all of you. Please leave the Christmas tree up until I make it back. I hope to be with you guys by March.

    Love from your son,

    Clifton

I was 17 years old at that time. My heart sank. I felt a profound sadness that my favorite brother would not be home for Christmas. He was one of the Tuskegee Airmen and was responsible for maintaining the airplanes flying off to fight in the World War II. My mother, being the optimist, said, "Well, it looks like we'll get to have two Christmases this year!"

After Christmas, my sister and I worked together to make sure we could keep that Christmas tree looking as pretty as possible. This was no easy job. By mid-January, the tree branches drooped so low to the ground that they became a sliding board for the ornaments.

Each day, ornaments would come crashing to the ground and there were new pine needles all over the wooden floor. My sister and I had to took turns to keep sweeping them up. We repositioned the ornaments to the stronger branches on the tree, hoping they would stay on. Each time we freshened that tree up, my sister and I were full of thoughts about Clifton and how happy we would be to see him again. It made us feel that he was close by, even though he was hundreds of miles away.

On March 5, the doorbell rang. I ran to the door and gave Clifton a big hug. As he hugged mum, I could see he peek over her head at the Christmas tree.

"It's beautiful," he said. "Thank you."

Clifton opened his present and told us all sorts of stories about his work in Tuskegee. That night as we slept, we heard a crash in the living room. We all ran to see what had happened. The tree had toppled onto the sofa and there were needles and broken ornaments everywhere. We all had a good laugh.

    1. (1) The writer's family felt very ________after they read the letter from Clifton.
      A . sad B . excited C . nervous D . satisfied
    2. (2) Why did the writer compare the tree branches to a "sliding board"?

    3. (3) The writer's family kept repairing the broken Christmas tree because________.
A . they wanted to make their house clean B . they wanted to share the tree with Clifton C . they couldn't afford a new Christmas tree D . they needed something to forget about Clifton
