Sam was a fifteen- year-old boy living with his little sister, Julie. Their parents had passed away long ago. Sam had taken care of Julie by himself.

One day, Sam woke up at three in the morning as usual. When Julie was sleeping alone, Sam left their little house to send newspapers. That afternoon, Sam hurried home after school because Julie was at home alone. However, Julie and the old man were standing in front of the house, and Julie shouted to Sam, "Brother! He's our grandfather!"

The grandfather smiled and said, "Sam, thank you for giving me the coat and letting me know how good my grandson is. This coat was the one that I gave my son a long time ago!"

Most of us have heard about the tragic plane crash of Germanwings Flight 9525. After taking off from Barcelona, Spain, the plane crashed into the French mountains on its way to Dusseldorf, Germany. Immediately, it caused shock and also questions. How do people find out what happened?

There is one piece of equipment that is the key to finding the mysteries of a crash: the black box. It is a fight recorder that monitors fight data and audio. On an airplane, there are actually two black boxes: the flight data recorder(FDR), which holds information, such as altitude levels; the other box is the cockpit(驾驶员座舱) voice recorder(CVR), which records conversations in the cockpit, as well as radio conversations with air traffic control. Both can be viewed as a narrator(解说员) of the whole flight.

Black boxes are important for people to find out the cause of accidents. Usually they are bright orange so that rescuers can easily find them. Since they play such an important role, they need to be very strong.

Australia was the first country to require airplanes to have flight recorders in 1967. Since then, almost every country on the Earth follows this rule.

So what did the black boxes tell us about Germanwings Flight 9525? By studying their data, it is believed that the crash was caused by the co-pilot on purpose.

In the event of a tragedy, the truth must become clear. This is why black boxes play such an important role in finding out the truth.

Years ago, my brother was killed in an accident. After my brother died, my mother was in deep sadness. I was only a four-year-old girl at that time, but I still understood the sudden change in my mom's attitude(态度) towards. . Suddenly everything around us was dangerous. When I was 14, my mother died suddenly in a car accident. It was really a painful time for me. After that, I made a(n) . I could either live out the rest of my life trying to be "safe" or I could be brave enough to live out an exciting and sometimes dangerous life. If I choose the later, I worry that I may have betrayed(背叛) my mother, but she has been a driving force in my life and, in the end I suppose that she would have been  of me. The more often I do things that scare me or that make me uncomfortable, the more I realize that I can do a lot more than I  I could do.

I've also come to believe that fear can be a good thing, if we face it. Believing that has made my world a less scary place.

The professor always tried so hard.  Time after time, he would dream up an amazing idea that was sure to change the world - but then it didn't.  "A time machine!" he shouted. The professor's dream wasn't just any old time machine.

But the professor's wife wasn't so sure about his great idea, "It'll never work. You can't make time," she said. The professor disagreed, " If you can make money and save money, why can't you do the same with time?"

In his workshop, the professor drew lots of plans for his new time machine. He soon lost track(轨道) of time. He created model clocks of every shape and size.  Finally, he made an amazing discovery—a way to save time and to give him lots of extra time. "I've got it!" he cried. "If I give up my time machine project, I'll have plenty of time for other things!"

Math is the tool and language of economics, engineering and other subjects, such as physics, computing and biology. It is used in almost every aspect of the world.

When we build buildings with perfectly square corners, the Pythagorean Theorem(勾股定理) is helpful. When we want to know how many scores we need to get on a final exam to become the top 10 of our grade, algebra(代数) can help us. Moreover, we wouldn't have video games without algebra. And our HDTV relies on math, too.

Apart from that, math provides us with a lot of skills in solving problems. When doing a math problem, we need to define the problem, think of a way to solve it, use a solution and work out the answer. In this way, we develop our ability to make complex decisions down the road.

Besides, math teaches us logic and order. When we want to get a certain result in math, we must follow exact steps. The training of mind that we develop in math classes can be carried over into our everyday life.

Through learning math, we can also learn critical-thinking skills. For example, when students are required to explain how they get the solution of a complex(复杂的) problem or to describe the ideas behind a formula(公式)。they are actually using a way of critical-thinking.

We may never need to use the quadratic equation(二次方程) in our adult life, but the process of learning it may benefit us in certain ways that we may never think about.
