My older brother and I once decided to work during the summer tree-planting activity. And we thought it would be great to be in the sun and get some 1air.
When 2arrived for our first day of work, the manager looked at us and said, " Did you read the3you got about how to dress?" "We had not 4 taken the time to read them carefully. "we answered. "Well, boys, you're wearing T-shirts". "Do you know who loves T-shirts?" he asked.
"Not really", we answered.
" Mosquitoes (蚊子)!" he replied 5 a smile. "But you won't even feel the mosquitoes. Because you'll be so busy getting bitten by blackflies (黑蝇) that you won't even notice the mosquitoes! " We 6and saw that the other workers were wearing long shirts and hats.
A couple of the other workers came over to us and gave us their other shirts and hats, but we still didn't have long pants to protect our 7 from the biting insects.
It was the 8 day of my life. When we got home that night, my legs were9 in big red bites. My brother's legs were bitten too.
Now when I hear the buzz (嗡嗡声) of a blackfly, I think of that terrible day. It reminds me of the great lesson I 10 that day一always read the instructions!
A school in Britain is offering its pupils laptops (手提电脑). Students can use their own laptops in class and for homework at home. Pupils at the school can hand in workon line and receive feed back (反馈) from teachers when they are not in the classroom. It's Britain's first school to offer students laptops. All 1,400 boys and girls will receive one. A laptop cost around ￡400.In all, the laptop project cost the school over ￡500,000. Parents are being asked to pay ￡2 every week for their child's laptop when the child stays at the school. Parents think that the price is very low because laptops are expensive to buy.
The head master of the school, Bill Roberts, says that with the help of the laptop, anytime students want to learn. They can work whether they are at the school or at home. Mr. Roberts also says, however, that children will continue to use Traditional learning materials (方法). Teachers think using laptops can raise pupils' work speed (速度). Parents also think using laptops can help their children learn better. They think they can help children prepare for the real world.
Q: At recess (课间休息), I don't know what to do because all my friends are playing games I don't like or don't want to play. So I end up standing by myself at recess doing nothing. What should I do?

A: In fact, recess was my least favorite part of the school day for Grades 1 to 5.I was never really into playing kick-ball.So, like you, I spent many days at recess standing alone. Take advantage of the extra time you have. I learned that reading a book is the best way to pass time, especially if it is sunny. Books are good for a lonely recess, because they take you out of your world and into another. If reading isn't your thing, then try making new friends. Some other things I would do at recess were chess and paper cutting. Those might be worth trying. Maybe the teach-er who is watching over all the kids needs someone to talk to as well. When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage (行李), but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect (尊敬) elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment (难看的) in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive (敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description "old". I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think "growing old" is a problem since "old" shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn't want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don't respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don't show my feelings through words.

There are many ways to help improve your health like eating healthy food. Taking exercise and getting medical help. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of (不管) age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough.
The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure (血压).
Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as "lazy". Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don't have much time to sleep. they only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you'll do.
How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas an expert (专家) in sleep. He says ,"Sleep is like a credit (信用卡) card. When you sleep less. you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don't sleep, the more hours you shouldn't sleep to 'pay back' the hours on your 'sleep credit card.'"
For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said. "Don't think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish (愚蠢的) idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more."
