"Why do I live? Why do I wish for anything, or do anything? Is there anything in my life that will not be destroyed by my death?" Like Leo Tolstoy, the famous Russian writer, many people ask these difficult questions. Tolstoy spent his whole life trying to answer these difficult questions.

As a young man, he thought people could achieve perfection if they tried hard enough. So he worked very hard to be the best in everything. He thought that he would find meaning and truth in success.

In 1850s. Tolstoy wrote his first stories. He wrote about his life in the army. He also told stories about his childhood. These works were published and Tolstoy became a well-known writer.

He earned the respect he always wanted. Many rich and smart men met and talked with Tolstoy. Some of them were writers like him. They talked a lot about faith ( 信仰) and the meaning of life. But soon Tolstoy recognized that these men were not perfect. Now he knew they could not answer his questions about faith.

So in the 1860s, Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning of life. He opened a school for the children of his serfs-the people who worked on his land. These workers were very poor. He wanted to help them because he thought they were more honest than the rich people he knew.

Tolstoy learned a lot from his workers. He understood how they worked hard to support their families. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning. So in 1862, Leo Tolstoy married a young woman named Sonya Behrs.

The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy's life. It was during this time that he wrote his most famous books-War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Many experts say that War and Peace is one of the greatest books ever written. In these books, Tolstoy believed humans should live a simple life and take care of their families. Tolstoy thought this would satisfy him and bring him happiness.

Leo Tolstoy is still a very respected writer today. His faith and writings have influenced many people all over the world.

The Long March 5 Y3 is China's strongest rocket. XINHUA

China's biggest and most powerful carrier (运载) rocket roared (轰鸣) into space on Dec 27, 2019. The Long March 5 kicked off its mission (任务) at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan.

The 57-meter-tall rocket, known as the Long March 5 Y3, is the tallest, strongest and most technologically sophisticated (技术复杂的) rocket in China. Since it is much bigger than China's other Long March rockets, people call it "Fat 5". The rocket is able to carry spacecraft (航天器) weighing up to 25 tons – roughly the weight of 16 midsize cars – into low-Earth orbit (近地轨道), China Daily reported. This payload capacity (有效载荷) is about 2.5 times greater than that of any other Chinese rocket.

During the December launch, the Long March 5 successfully sent the Shijian 20 experimental satellite into orbit. At more than 8 tons, it is the heaviest and most advanced communications (通信) satellite built by China.

The launch also tested key technologies that will be used to take the Chang'e 5 probe (探测器) to the moon, according to the China National Space Administration.

The success of the Long March 5 launch was hard-earned. The rocket's first launch was carried out in November 2016 at the Wenchang center. A second mission took place in July 2017 at the same site, but failed to send a satellite into orbit. According to project leaders, in the two years since that failure, the rocket's research team held more than 600 seminars (研讨会) and carried out at least 1,000 experiments and tests to improve the rocket.

"Compared with the Long March 5 Y2 that was used in the failed second mission, the new one has about 200 technical improvements, including changes to the engine design," Li Dong, the rocket's chief designer (总设计师), said to China Daily.

The future missions of the Long March 5 will include a trip to Mars, taking back moon samples (样本), and placing parts of a manned (载人的) space station into orbit.

    1. (1) What do we know about the Long March 5?
A . It was launched at the start of 2019. B . It was launched in Xichang. C . It is the tallest rocket in the world. D . It is the biggest Long March rocket.
    2. (2) What is the payload capacity of other Chinese rockets?
      A . About 2.5 tons. B . About 10 tons. C . About 25 tons. D . About 63 tons.
    3. (3) The Long March 5 was used to ________.
A . improve satellite engineering technologies B . send China's heaviest satellite into orbit C . take the Chang'e 5 probe to the moon D . send a manned space station into orbit
    4. (4) What is the last paragraph about?
A . When the Long March 5 will stop working. B . How China's space station will be built. C . What the Long March 5 will be used for in the future. D . What China's space exploration will focus on in the future.

If you are in Shanghai and want to throw away a cup of milk tea, be careful. You need to follow these steps: first, pour out any leftover into a wet waste bin; second, put the paper wrapper into a recyclable waste bin; third, throw the single-use cup into a dry waste bin.

Sound difficult and annoying? You'll have to get used to it. From July 1st on, people in Shanghai are required to sort their garbage according to strict rules.

Why should we sort our garbage? The answer lies in the increasing amount of waste we are producing. Chinese cities produce over 200 million tons of waste each year, according to China Economic Net. Most of this waste is buried in landfills, which may pollute the water and soil. Moreover, we are running out of space for new landfills.

In fact, more than half of our waste can be recycled. Recyclable garbage can be made into new materials. For example, wet garbage can be used to make gas, heat and many other kinds of useful things. But in order to recycle garbage efficiently, we need to sort our garbage.

Can't garbage-processing companies do the sorting job focus? They can. But that requires a lot of work and costs lots of money. Things will become much easier if each of us can sort our own garbage. Besides, the annoying task of sorting might encourage people to produce less waste. Do you still want to buy that milk tea?

    1. (1) If you want to throw a drink bottle, which of the following dustbins should you throw in?
      A . a recyclable waste bin B . a poisonous waste bin C . a dry waste bin. D . a wet waste bin
    2. (2) What does the underlined word "landfills" mean in Chinese?
      A . 沙漠 B . 森林地区 C . 郊区 D . 垃圾填埋场
    3. (3) What can be used to make gas and heat?
      A . Wet garbage. B . Dry garbage. C . Recyclable garbage. D . Harmful garbage.
    4. (4) What's the best title for the text?

Some people might think that online privacy (隐私) is a, well, private matter. If you don't want your information getting out online, don't put it on social media. Simple, right?

But keeping your information private isn't just about your own choices. It's about your friends' choices, too. Results from a study show that, with the development of all kinds of social media, people may need to stop and think about just how much they control their personal information, and where the boundaries of their privacy are.

When someone joins a social network, the first order of business is, of course, to find friends. To help the users find their friends, many apps offer to import contact lists ( 导入联系人清单 ) from someone's phone or e-mail or Facebook, to find matches with people already in the network.

"Sharing those contact lists seems harmless", says David Garcia, a computational social scientist at the Complexity Science Hub Vienna in Austria. "People giving contact lists, they're not doing anything wrong," he says. "You are their friend. You give them the e-mail address and phone number." Most of the time, you probably want to stay in touch with the person, possibly even via the social media site.

But the social network then has that information — whether or not the owner of it wants it to be shared.

Social platforms' ability to collect information into what are called shadow profiles first came to light with a Facebook bug in 2013. The bug accidentally shared the e-mail addresses and phone numbers of some 6 million users with all of their friends, even when the information wasn't public.

Facebook immediately corrected the mistake. But later, some users noticed that the phone numbers on their Facebook profiles had still been filled in — even though they had not given Facebook their digits. Instead, Facebook had collected the numbers from the contact lists innocently provided by their friends, and filled in the missing information for them. A shadow profile had become reality.

It's no surprise that a social platform could take names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers and match them up with other people on the same platform. But Garcia wanted to know whether these shadow profiles could be extended to people not on the social platform at all.

He turned to a social network called Friendster which was closed up in 2015. Friendster was launched in 2002. In 2008, the social site attracted more than 115 million users. But by 2009 people began to jump ship for other sites, and finally Friendster closed for good. However, by using the Internet Archive — a nonprofit library, Garcia still found lots of users' personal information about Friendster.

"You are not in full control of your privacy," he concludes. If your friend is on a social platform, so are you. And you don't have a choice in the matter.

Garcia published his findings August 4 in Science Advances.

    1. (1) What can you know from the Facebook bug in 2013?
A . The bug shared all the personal information of Facebook users to their friends. B . All the Facebook users can find their phone numbers on their Facebook profiles. C . Few people knew Facebook would collect information into shadow profiles. D . Facebook refused to correct the bug.
    2. (2) Why did Garcia turn to study Friendster?
A . Because he showed a great interest in Friendster. B . Because Friendster was very popular among young people. C . Because he wondered if shadow profiles affected people not on social platform. D . Because his science center asked him to do a study about that.
    3. (3) What can we infer from the passage?
A . With some media, we don't need to make friends in real world. B . You can keep your personal information as long as you don't use social media. C . Facebook is widely used around the whole world. D . Even if you are not on a social platform, your information may still be shared.
    4. (4) Which can be the best title of the passage?
A . How to protect your personal information. B . Respect online privacy. C . Social media is not safe. D . Online privacy stays just in your imagination.
