Last summer my son, Eric, left for university in another country. Our once lively house became quiet and1. I missed him so much that I started sending him messages on the phone, mainly to say2or to give him a word of warning. One of my messages says, "So you told me you3your credit card(信用卡). If you don't try hard to mend your careless ways, one day you'll4and find your brain missing.
I did get Eric's messages, but most of them were about5. They were no different from the notes he used to leave6the white board when he was at home. "I bought a new pair of shoes. They cost me $90. Please help!" "Money is running short7 I've bought some books for my research paper. Help me please."8, however. Eric begins to send me all kinds of articles: some funny, some touching and some worth9. He says they will help me understand young men better and keep up with the times.
I read the articles slowly, like a10student, with mixed feelings as well -my kid, who followed me around not long ago, has now become my11. So I write back, "I've read all those articles. I'll take12as a loving son's expectations towards his mother. He must be thinking that his mother is still13enough to accept new things. That makes me feel proud. What we parents lack (缺乏) most is the ability to learn and14, in both body and mind. Thank you, my son." In this way we share ideas and15each other, with a gentle and beautiful language we seldom use. Every time I read those messages, I feel my heart filled with warmth.

Joe moved to Canada with his family at the age of 41. There were many stressful days for them in the beginning. Since Joe had no job the savings (存款) they brought with them were diminishing rapidly.
One day, Joe went out to look for a job. As he walked, he saw many things on the street that people threw away. Joe could not believe his eyes. "Why would people throw away such things? "he asked himself. Joe saw a "new" television and decided to take it home to see what the problem was. Since he was 12 years old, Joe's main hobby has been electronics (电子产品). As a teenage boy, he began to repair radios, TVs and so on.
Joe brought the television home and turned it on. There were pictures on the screen, but there was no sound. He opened the back cover. Before long, Joe found the problem. The loudspeaker (扬声器) was broken. He went out again. Among the garbage on the street, he found a toy piano. He carried the piano home. Luckily its loudspeaker worked. Fifteen minutes later, Joe had a TV with both pictures and sound.
Joe began to question people about why they were throwing away electronics. The answer was the same from everyone: getting them repaired was too expensive. People would rather buy new products.
Joe decided to open an electronics repair shop that would offer fair prices. Today, Joe has been very successful in his new country. Instead of losing hope, he chose to make the best out of a difficult situation.
Once upon a time there was no tea at all in England. People there used to drink a light beer. No coffee or milk but large glasses of beer stood on the breakfast table.
When tea was first brought to England, an old couple got some as a special treat. But they do not know how it should be used. They cooked the leaves in hot water, and spread them on a piece of bacon (熏肉)which they were going to have for dinner. They ate the leaves and threw the tea away! However, tea is becoming as popular as coffee and milk in England today.
Tea is the leaf of a plant which grows widely in China, Japan and some other countries. Tea farmers usually grow many tea plants on a large piece of land. When the leaves are ready to be picked, it is the busiest time for tea farmers in a year. They pull off the leaves and dry them. In their spare time，they pick out the best leaves and get them ready for market. In China, whenever a visitor comes into house, he is served with a cup of tea.
Volunteering is fun and rewarding but if you want to be a good volunteer you need to learn more.
Be well-trained. Know what you're doing as a volunteer. If you're good at your job it will be easier to help others.
Work as part of a team and make sure everyone works together and shares the work. If someone asks for help just give a hand. If you need some help ask politely for it. Always remember a person's strength is small but a group of people is of a great power.
Be understanding. Standing at other people's point of view will help you understand others' feelings better.
Be friendly. To be a volunteer you might meet new people who want to make friends with. You might just meet someone who becomes a friend for the rest of your life.

Pets are a part of people's lives. Some pets are like family. In these days, many people have pets at home and spend a lot of money improving their lives. In fact, in some parts of the world, pets get real VIP treatment(待遇). VIP usually means Very Important People, but here VIP means Very Important Pets!
When you want to give Fido or Kitty a holiday, or when you are going away on business, you can put them at a dog and cat hotel, and cats have a large place with something to climb on and play with. The guests get the best food during their stays at these hotels.
There are other special services(服务) at hotels. Imagine you are traveling and you want to see your pet: the hotel can put a video camera in the pet's room. So you can see your Fido or Kitty on TV.
The hotels usually have good groomers(美容师): They often bath and take the best hair care for the pets. But you need to make an appointment because people are usually very busy taking care of pets.
How time flies! We're just leaving our lovely junior high school. I have to say to my teachers and classmates. I'll never the happy days we have spent together. Thanks, dear teachers. You always work and have taught us so much. More importantly, you've taken good care of us and guided us. Thanks, dear classmates. We have got along well each other like sisters and brothers.
