According to a recent study in China, eating an egg a day may lower the risk of cardiovascular(心血管的) disease.

The research shows people who eat eggs on a daily basis have lowered the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by more than 10%, compared with those who don't eat eggs in their daily meals. Despite the high-quality protein, eggs also have high amounts of cholesterol(胆固醇), and therefore doctors once thought that they might be harmful to patients with heart disease, as Yu Canqing, the co-author of the study explained.

Due to the limited size of sample and information, however, existing studies on the relationship between eggs and cardiovascular disease are still debatable. That is why Yu and his colleagues continue to do the research.

At first, they used information from an ongoing study of about half a million adults living in 10regions of China. They further narrowed down the data to 416, 213 participants who had never been diagnosed with cancer, cardiovascular disease or diabetes(糖尿病). Among these adults aged between30 to 79, a little more than 13% claimed to eat about an egg per day, while over g% of them said that they never or hardly ever had eggs. Nearly all the participants ate chicken eggs instead of duck eggs, Yu noted.

The researchers tracked the selected group for almost 9 years, concentrating on major coronary(冠状动脉病)events, such as heart attacks and strokes. After analysing the data, the researchers found that people who ate about an egg a day had a lower risk of heart disease compared with those who did not eat eggs. According to the data, participants eating one egg daily had lowered the risk of hemorrhagic stroke(出血性中风) by about26% and ischemic heart disease(缺血性心脏病)by 12%.

    1. (1) In the past, doctors warned patients to avoid eating too many eggs because______.
A . eggs can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease B . eggs contain too much high-quality protein C . eggs have high amounts of cholesterol D . eggs contain nutritional elements
    2. (2) According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
A . The participants come from different regions of China. B . More than 15%of the participants said they ate about an egg a day. C . All the participants ate chicken eggs D . During the follow-up, the risk of hemorrhagic stroke has been lowered by 30%.
    3. (3) What is the best title for the passage?
A . An Egg a Day for You and Me B . An Egg a Day to Lower the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease C . An Efficient Cure to Cardiovascular Disease D . An Egg a Day to Cure Heart Disease

We all know ultra-processed foods are harmful to us, but it seems hard to resist the sweet smell of sweets and cakes. However, recently published research may make you think twice before picking up the colourful sweets next time.

UItra-processed foods range from the sweets that turn your tongue blue to those healthier- sounding canned soups packed with artificial(人工的))flavours. All in all, they are typically much more calorie-,sodium-(钠)and sugar-packed. According to the research, people who eat more ultra-processed foods are more likely to be more obese(病态肥胖的) and overweight, and tend to have a higher risk of having heart problems, diabetes or even cancer, including colorectal cancer(结肠直肠癌), breast cancer, etc.

This new link was observed when researchers analysed 24-hour dietary records of nearly 105,000dults. Participants recorded what they ate from a list of 3, 300 food items. Those items were later divided into different groups based on the degree to which they were processed.

"Ultra-processed fats and sauces, sugary products and drinks were associated with an increased risk of overall cancer, "the study says. Researchers have found that a 10% increase in the share of ultra-processed foods in the diet was related to an even greater increase in risks for overall cancer and breast cancer.

Faced with the surprising results, the researchers did many analysis and adjusted the findings for other factors, according to the study co-author Mathilde Touvier, and still, the results were quite concerning. She and her team suggested that people should try to limit the consumption of ultra-processed foods, making a balanced and diversified diet one of the prime concerns about public health.

    1. (1) What is the feature of ultra-processed foods?
A . They are often served in large volumes B . They are more calorie-, sodium-and sugar-packed C . They are cooked for a long time D . They contain no nutrition at all
    2. (2) The underlined word "associated" in paragraph 4 can be replaced by     .
      A . faced B . connected C . recorded D . shared
    3. (3) What can we learn from the passage?
A . Ultra-processed sugary product is the reason for an increased risk of colorectal cancer. B . Eating a lot of processed meat like bacon is tied to an increased overall cancer risk. C . Ultra-processed products are not responsible for an increased risk of breast cancer. D . People who live on ultra-processed foods are more likely to have heart problems or diabetes.
    4. (4) What is the passage mainly about?
A . Cancers are caused by ultra-processed foods. B . Eating less ultra-processed foods benefits people a lot. C . UItra-processed foods are linked to increased cancer risk. D . UItra-processed foods are associated with overweight.

It is not easy to eat perfectly for all time-even for dieticians! But when bad habits become common practice, you may end up with health issues ranging from weight gain to heart disease. So which unhealthy habits are getting us into trouble? Among the many, we've chosen six common ones that we should all avoid1.

        ⒈Poor Meal Planning

Based on our survey, one of the biggest obstacles to healthy eating goes to" time". Leave your meal for last-minute decisions, and it usually ends in fast food and pizza delivery. Planning your weekly meals may only take a few minutes, but will save your money, calories, and time in the long run.

⒉Too Many Meals Away from Home

Despite being convenient, food served in restaurants and takeaways also tends to have larger portions with more calories and sodium. Preparing your meals at home, instead, would be a wiser and healthier choice.

        ⒊Too Many Processed Foods

When shopping at the supermarket, you will find a large variety of salty, fatty and sugary convenience food with few nutrients. But it is the fresh and whole foods that you actually need. So next time when going shopping, read labels first before you go for more highly processed goods

        ⒋Too Much Added Sugar

Not limited to sweets, chocolate, cakes and sweet drink, Sugar is also hiding in foods you might not think of, such as salad dressings, ketchup, bread and fat-free yoghurt. Keep records of the total sugar in your diet and figure out how to cut back on those empty calories.

        ⒌Mindless Eating

Instead of eating when hungry, many of us would take a bite when we're bored, tired, stressed happy, or sad. You'd better not eat when your stomach isn't empty.

        ⒍Too Many Liquid Calories

It's easy to forget that calories from soda, juice and other sugar-sweetened beverages count! Choose calorie-free drinks like water and plain tea instead

    1. (1) Which habit will easily lead to pizza delivery?
A . Mindless eating B . Too many processed food C . Poor meal planning D . Too many liquid calories
    2. (2) Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A . Foods served in restaurants are convenient and with less sodium. B . We should read labels after buying some highly processed foods. C . Sugar is often hidden in foods we may not think of like ketchup and bread. D . We'd better eat something every time we feel bored.
    3. (3) According to the author's tips, ______can replace high-calorie drinks when you are thirsty.
      A . Juice B . plain tea C . soda D . beverages

Parties and social gatherings no longer excite us the same way they once did. This is not due to a lack of desire to socialize, but the smartphone.

At parties, more people are on their smartphones than on their drinks. According to a recent International Data Corporation study, well over half of all Americans have a smartphone and reach for it the moment they wake up, keeping it in hand all day. In addition, too many people in society are using smartphones while driving and as a result, they get into car crashes. 34 percent of teenagers admit to texting while driving, and they confirm that text messaging is their number one driving interruption. People's attachment to their smartphones is unbelievably becoming more important than the lives of themselves and others.

Just as drivers dismiss the importance of focusing while on the road, many people also fail to recognize the significance of human interaction. When with their friends, some people pointlessly check or send text messages in the presence of a friend, which sends a message to that friend: the person I am texting is more important than you. In addition, relying on our smartphones to make friends does not give us the same advantage as being able to make new friendships in the real world. Facetoface conversations will give us much stronger communication skills in the long run.

As many people risk their lives and the lives of people around them just to send a text or mindlessly check their messages, smartphones are in many ways more dangerous to people. The quality of this technology is preventing societal achievements and weakening the value of communication. Not only is the smartphone affecting our desire to interact (交流) facetoface, but it is also lowering society's ability to communicate.

    1. (1) The purpose of this text is to ________.
A . call for an end to use the smartphone while driving B . appeal to us to pay attention to communication skills C . express a concern about the overuse of the smartphone D . advise us to be cautious about the addiction to the smartphone
    2. (2) The second paragraph is developed by ________.
      A . giving examples B . listing figures C . comparing facts D . analyzing the effects
    3. (3) The author advocates us to make new friends ________.
      A . by using smartphones B . in a facetoface way C . in different ways D . under a free circumstance
    4. (4) Overdependence on the smartphone leads to the fact that ________.
A . parties and gatherings limit their social circle B . people are more and more narrowminded C . people's communication skills are weakened D . facetoface communication becomes less important

A flexitarian is a person who mainly eats plant-based foods but occasionally eats meat or fish. .That's why the name of this diet is a combination of the words" flexible" and" vegetarian. It has no clear-cut rules or recommended numbers of calories and macronutrients. In fact, it's more a lifestyle than a diet. Since there is no clear definition of this diet yet, it's hard to say what benefits it has. However, studies on vegetarian diets have shown that eating mostly fruits, vegetables, legumes( 豆科作物), whole grains and other less processed whole foods may promote health. .

        Reduce Heart Disease

A study which followed 45,000 adults for over 11 years showed that vegetarians had a 32% lower risk of heart disease than non-vegetarians. The study focused on vegetarian diets instead of the flexitarian diet. However, the flexitarian diet is meant to be mostly plant-based foods and will most likely have benefits similar to fully vegetarian diets.

        Lose Weight

Eating more plant-based foods that are naturally lower in calories and limiting high-calorie processed foods are good for weight loss. And those who follow vegan(严格素食主义者) diets tend to lose the most weight. Since the flexitarian diet is closer to a vegetarian diet than a vegan one, it may help with weight loss but possibly not as much as a vegan diet would.

        Prevent Cancer

Foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains have nutrients and antioxidants that may help prevent cancer. .

A 7-year study on 78,000 people who had suffered from colorectal cancer found that semi-vegetarians were 8% less likely to get this type of cancer, compared to non-vegetarians. Therefore, eating more vegetarian foods may reduce your cancer risk.

        Lower the Incidence(发生率) of Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a global health problem. .This is most probably because plant-based foods are high in fibre and low in unhealthy fat and added sugar, which helps weight loss. A study in over 60,000 participants found that the prevalence of type 2 diabetes was 1.5% lower in flexitarians compared to non-vegetarians.

    A. Studies have shown that people who follow a vegetarian diet may lose more weight than those who do not

    B. Eating more plant-based foods will also drive the demand for more land to be devoted to growing fruits and vegetables

    C. The flexitarian diet is more flexible than fully vegetarian or vegan diets

    D. Research suggests that vegetarian diets are associated with a lower overall incidence of all cancers

    E. When flexitarian and other plant-based diets are well planned, they can be very healthy

    F. Eating a healthy diet, especially more plant-based foods, may help prevent and manage this disease

    G. So the flexitarian diet may provide the following possible health benefits
