If you've been paying attention, you know that rooks (乌鸦)are very intelligent birds. Now these geniuses have been given a job: six rooks have been trained to pick up rubbish in the Puy du Fou historical theme park in western France.

Whenever these six rooks deposit a cigarette butt or other small pieces of trash in a special container, it gives out a treat rewarding (奖励)rooks for their efforts.

The idea came from one of the park's falconers (放鹰者), Christophe Gaborit. As part of the falconry show, rooks had been trained to pick up roses and bring them to a princess, so in the 2000s, Gaborit raised and trained two rooks to do the same with rubbish.

The rooks started to pick up rubbish for the first time over the weekend, and they'll be working four days a week under close supervision (监视) not for the birds, but to make sure the humans don't deliberately (故意地)drop rubbish to watch the birds clean it up.

The purpose of the rooks is to educate the people, to open their minds to think: OK, the birds are able to do something that we are much more able to do than them, so we should do this by ourselves," park president Nicolas de Villiers told NPR. "It's a funny way to show the people that you cannot throw the papers everywhere."

    1. (1) What are the rooks like according to the first paragraph?
      A . Stupid. B . Clever. C . Kind. D . Cute
    2. (2) How are the rooks trained to pick up rubbish?
A . By picking up the roses for people・ B . By working for four days a week. C . By cleaning a special container. D . By rewarding their hard work.
    3. (3) Why do the rooks work under supervision?
A . Because they are not clever enough at first. B . Because people like dropping litter everywhere. C . Because they may be not hard-working at all. D . Because people may have fun with their abilities.
    4. (4) What's the main purpose of this passage?
A . Let people know that corvids are a clever animal. B . Educate people to learn from the great man, Gobarit. C . Make people know they can do more on rubbish. D . Hope people can sort out the rubbish in any place.

Mrs. Brown, who lived alone in the Bridge Block, was asking for help because of his missing cat. "My baby has been missing for over a month now, and I want him back so badly," said Mrs. Brown. She said that Clyde, her 12-year-old cat, didn't come home for dinner more than a month ago. Although he was old and weak, Mrs. Brown loved him a lot. The next morning, he didn't appear for breakfast either. After Clyde missed an extra-special lunch, she called the police.

When the policeman asked her to describe Clyde, she told him that Clyde had beautiful green eyes, had all his teeth but was missing half of his left ear, and was twelve years old and totally white. She then told the officer that Clyde was about a foot high.

"Is Clyde your child or your pet?" the officer doubtfully asked. "Well, he's my cat, of course,"Mrs. Brown replied. "Lady, you're supposed to report missing PERSONS, not missing CATS," said the irritated policeman. "Well, who can I report this to?" she asked. "You can't. You have to ask around your neighborhood or put up flyer (传单)replied the officer.

Mrs. Brown figured that a notice board would work a lot better than a piece of paper on a telephone pole. There was an empty billboard at the end of her street just off the highway. Cars only passed by smoothly between 2 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. The rest of the day, the highway was so full of drivers that no one moves. She took most of the money out of her savings account and rented the notice board with $3,000 for a month.

The month has passed, but Clyde has not appeared. Because she has almost no money in savings, Mrs. Brown called the local newspaper to see if anyone could help her rent the notice board for just one more month. She is waiting but, so far, no one has stepped forward.

    1. (1) Why did Mrs. Brown keep on looking for her cat?
A . Because the cat was old and weak. B . Because the cat was beautiful. C . Because she regarded the cat as her child. D . Because the cat was expensive.
    2. (2) What can we infer from the policeman's words?
A . In fact, Clyde was the son of Mrs. Brown. B . The police would help to report the missing cat. C . Mrs. Brown couldn't find her cat if she put up flyer. D . The policeman was impatient to Mrs. Brown.
    3. (3) The underline part "irritated" in paragraph 3 probably means              .
      A . surprised B . excited C . angry D . sad
    4. (4) Which of the following is TRUE?
A . It was very crowded on the highway between 2 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. B . It cost 3000 dollars to rent the notice board for a month. C . The local newspaper helped Mrs. Brown find her cat. D . Mrs. Brown would give up looking for her cat because of money.

Today, after 10 days of medical treatment, for the first time, I went out alone to meet a motherly lady who I had met during my stay in a program. She had been unwell recently and I lived alone. Her sons live in foreign countries.

After I called her and told about my plan to visit her, she started becoming excited and happily planning food at once. Nowadays, she has a lady cook coming by to help her but she does part of the work herself with her bandaged leg.

I reached her home alone after being guided a couple of times by her before. I carried little things (snacks, books etc.) for her. She had been waiting for some time when I arrived. We talked about different things from health to her life and mine, from past to future, from food to travel etc. During the discussion, her care for me became clear when she made warm suggestions or supported me.

During the last few months, she had struggled with health and housework. She had got over those difficulties and here she was telling me how all of us must face some problems. She had seen a few people facing worse problems in the hospital and mentioned about their cases and was grateful for her present condition which was manageable.

She wanted to gift me something—she kept thinking of a dress, watch, footwear etc. whatever was new and great in her home. I kept refusing but finally took the footwear out of politeness.

She loved the snacks I had brought and wanted to eat them with her tea. I was quite happy to see the child like interest.

While I was spending time with my motherly friend, the following thought kept coming back to me-probably this is why I have lived through the 10 days in this city. The time I spent with her seemed so much needed. I felt the deep peace it could bring to me and that brought such a big joy!

    1. (1) How did the lady feel when she heard the author's visit?
      A . Shocked. B . Pleased. C . Nervous. D . Embarrassed.
    2. (2) What can we learn about the lady from her talks with the author?
A . She was thoughtful and very healthy. B . She wished the author to live with her. C . She showed much concern to her bandaged leg. D . She was grateful compared with those who were less lucky.
    3. (3) Why did the author accept the lady's gift?
A . It would be a waste of money to keep shoes unused. B . She happened to need such shoes to wear*. C . It is impolite to turn down the warm-hearted offer D . She wanted to exchange gifts with her.
    4. (4) How did the time spent with the lady benefit (使受益)the author?
A . It helped the author to keep a peaceful mind. B . It gave the author a lot of advice on a better life. C . It enabled the author to live in the city so long. D . It made the author stay away from loneliness in life.
