        The Maldives is a country in danger. This small country — made up of over 1,000 islands (岛) in the Indian Ocean—is under threat from rising sea levels ( 面临海平面上升的威胁).

        As the water in the sea gets warmer, it expands (膨胀). Very slowly, sea levels are rising. Over the next 100 years they may rise by 50cm or more.

        That's because its islands are very low (低的)! The highest place in the country is only about 2m above sea level. Many of its islands are less than lm above sea level. Every year, a lot of people come to the Maldives to enjoy its beautiful islands and beaches.

        People have already had to move away from some islands. Many have moved to the capital city, Maid.A high wall (墙) around the island keeps the city from the sea.

        For the people of the Maldives, it's hard to know what will happen in the future.And that's a future no one wants.

        One day last November, Liz Douglas went shopping.  After she paid for all the things she bought, she went back to her car and put the shopping bags on the back seat of the car. Then she started to drive home.

        Ten minutes later, it began to rain heavily. Soon, Liz found it hard to see the road clearly.  Although Liz was an experienced driver, she felt afraid.

        Suddenly, Liz saw a tree in front of her and tried to stop the car. But it was too late. Liz closed her eyes,  Unluckily they didn't.

        However, Liz was lucky. When the car hit (碰撞) the tree, a bag of bread flew out of one of the shopping bags. The car turned over, and the bread landed between Liz' s head and the roof (顶部) of the car.

        About half an hour later, firefighters helped Liz go out of the car. They sent her to the hospital, but she went home soon because she didn't have any serious injuries (损伤).  Liz's son went to get the things Liz bought from the car and gave the bag of bread to her. She was going to keep it as a souvenir (纪念品) because it brought her good luck.

        It's a must-eat fruit in Southeast Asia: People there call it 'King of Fruits". Many love it so much that they eat it at every meal. It is the durian (榴莲).

        The durian can only grow in hot places. Its name "durian" comes from the Malay word "duff".

        The durian is the most famous fruit in Southeast Asia. It looks big and dangerous and has a very strong smell (浓烈的气味). They come in different sizes. A durian can grow up to 30cm long, and usually it can be as heavy as 1 to 3kg.

        The greatest thing about the durian is inside. When you open it up, a very strong smell comes out.  In Singapore, people can't bring a durian into a hotel room or onto a city train. And they can't bring a durian onto some planes, either.

        Although the durian has a strong smell, the fruit tastes quite good.Some animals living in the forest like it!

        Skyscrapers are very tall buildings in a city.  Looking up at them might make you dizzy (眩晕的).  Skyscrapers are a .wonder, whether (不管) you are looking up or down.

        How can the buildings be so tall? Something that happened during the 1880s made it possible.  First, a man named William Jenney got the idea of using a steel frame to hold up the walls and floors (钢架支撑墙壁和地面) of a building Jenney s idea made it possible to build taller buildings so he is called the "Father of the American skyscraper" Second, the elevators (电梯)improved. That helped people go up and down the tall buildings more easily."

        Back in the 1880s, Jenney s first tall building was 10 stories (楼层) high. In 2004, Taipei 101, at 101 stories high, became the tallest building in the world. But soon the Burj Khalifa in Dubai overtook it in 2010. The 828-meter building has 163 stories.

        Larry flies in the chair for 45 minutes. Then the balloons begin to lose air, slowly the chair comes down, and Larry is back on the ground. He is not hurt.

        Students in Japan are trying a new kind of travelling. In the past they could only go to the museums. That was boring for the teenagers. They often went by bus. Many of them felt sleepy in the museum. But now they can go out of doors. They can go to factories, villages and many other places they like.

        Experiential education (体验式教育) is now very popular in North America. It is also becoming more and more popular in Japan. Just look at the JTB, Japan's biggest travel agency. It has more than 300 different travel programs for students and schools. More than 25 schools have taken part in the programs.

        Where are the students going? They travel to fishing villages in Kyushu and farming villages in China. Some even go to English classes in England. Wherever they go, they enjoy helping the disabled(残疾的). By doing so, they learn how to take care of others. It's an experience that students will never forget.

        Travelling in Japan also does the farmers and fishermen good. Now there are many people visiting their villages. Visitors' coming every year brings them a lot of money and a better life.
