People have been making delicious pizza for a very long time.
Later, in Italy, people cooked these pieces of bread with herbs. When people from Europe came to the New World ,they got to know tomatoes. People didn't want to eat tomatoes at first, because they thought this kind of red fruit would kill them!
In the late 1800s, Raffaele Esposito, an Italian cook, made a dish for the king of Italy. He wanted to have the colors of the Italian flag in his dish, so he put red tomatoes, white cheese and green herbs on some bread. The dish was called pizza.
