    Red tourism in Shaoshan

For 17-year-old Luo Yaqian, a two-day trip to the former residence of Chairman Mao Zedong in Shaoshan, Hunan province, inspired her to work hard to realize her goal of going to a reputable university. During Luo's trip, the students visited Mao's former residence, his memorial hall and Mao Zedong Square. They also watched a movie and attended a lecture themed on Mao's younger days.

Luo said she was deeply inspired by the late Chinese leader. "Mao decided at an early age to leave his hometown to make a difference with his life. I am also determined to work hard and achieve good results in the national college entrance exam to realize my dream." she said.

In April, the authorities in Hunan launched a special study tour campaign for all primary and secondary school students to visit Shaoshan to make good use of the city's "red tourism" resources. By the end of last month, more than 81,600 students had taken part in the study tours in 93 batches, local government figures show. The cost of these tours is covered by the government.

Li Qingshan, 65, and his wife, Sun Zhuyun, 63, visited Shaoshan early this month from Qingdao, Shandong province, as they feared there would be too many visitors during the 130th anniversary of Mao's birth on Dec 26. It was Li's second visit to Shaoshan, following one he made in the 1990s. "Shaoshan has definitely improved greatly over the years, and the local environment, roads and scenic spots are now much better." he said.

Li, who served in the military in Shenyang, Liaoning province, for several years in the late 1970s, admires Mao's skills as a military leader. "He was a true leader of the Chinese people, and dedicated himself to changing their destiny." he said.

When the couple arrived in the square, it was already packed with visitors waiting their turn to bow three times in tribute(致敬)to Mao. Some visitors paid for a two-man military-style escort to guide them to the foot of Mao's statue. After Li and his wife bowed three times to the statue, they had tears in their eyes. Sun said: "People of my generation have lived through tough times, so we have deep feelings for Chairman Mao. He was a savior. Without him, we would not have been able to dream of living happy lives today."

    1. (1) Which of the following statements is true?
A . Only students are allowed to visit Shaoshan. B . It is Chairman Mao's experience that makes Luo want to go to college. C . College students don't have to pay for themselves when they visit Shaoshan. D . A variety of activities are arranged during the special study tour.
    2. (2) The underlined word escort can be replaced by ____.
      A . bodyguard B . companion C . coach D . official
    3. (3) The purpose of Li's second visit to Shaoshan was to ____.
A . Pay a tribute to Chairman Mao's leadership and contribution. B . Show respect to the local government's great efforts. C . Show appreciation for the impressive improvements in Shaoshan. D . Look back on the happy memories of their first visit in the 1990s.

In a TikTok video that has now collected nearly half a million views, the influence r Mady Maio describes taking a walk. But not just any walk: a silent one. For her, the 30-minute stroll was inspiring. She was resistant at first. "My anxiety could never disappear," she said in the video. Ms. Maio described the first two minutes as mental "mayhem"(一团乱麻)that eventually gave way to a "flow state". Her brain fog lifted. Ideas started popping into her head because she was "giving them space to enter".

And a 2020 study in The Journal of Environmental Psychology found that a 30-minute walk in an urban park reduced the amount of time that people dwelled on negative thoughts. Walking has also been shown to improve creativity and help fend off depression.

But for some people, the idea of a silent walk might seem painful. One 2014 study found that, if left with no other option, people would shock themselves rather than sit alone with their thoughts. "Most people seem to prefer to be doing something rather than nothing, even if that something is negative," the study authors wrote.

Walking, however, can make it more pleasant to spend time with ourselves, experts say. Erin C. Westgate, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Florida in Gainesville who studies boredom, found in her research that being in transit, which included walking or riding public transportation, was one of the times when people most often reported having enjoyable thoughts.

If the idea of daydreaming seems luxurious, it may be because our attention spans have shrinked over the last two decades. Back in 2004, however, Dr. Mark found that people could spend an average of two and a half minutes on email before turning to another work task. "Continually flipping our attention from one task to another is draining," Dr. Mark said.

But a silent walk can help replenish our "tank" so that we have a greater reserve of mental energy, she added. In other words, disconnecting for a while can actually help us perform better. In a future-oriented society we need opportunities to be satisfied with the here and now, Dr. Levy said, and drop the pressure to be productive. "There is great beauty and aliveness in the world outside of whatever it is we're doing on our devices." Dr. Levy said.

    1. (1) What is the function of the first paragraph?
      A . To show an opinion. B . To introduce the topic. C . To analyze a situation. D . To state a phenomenon.
    2. (2) We can infer from the text that ____
A . Taking a walk in the park contributes to negative feelings. B . Walking silently is related to depression to some degree. C . People suffering from depression are advised to take a walk. D . A silent walk may sound shocking for some people.
    3. (3) Which of the following opinions may Dr. Levy agree with?
A . We need to learn to enjoy the beauty of nature. B . We should put down our devices from time to time for relaxation. C . We cannot withdraw into ourselves when playing with our mobile phones. D . We can never appreciate the true beauty in the real world on our devices.
    4. (4) What's the best title for this passage?
A . Taking a walk: a resistance to depression. B . Let's take a walk in the city C . There is beauty and aliveness outside of our devices D . A silent walk refreshes your mind

Children who grow up at homes filled with books tend to have less cognitive(认知的)decrease when they reach old age, even when taking factors such as wealth and education into consideration.

Previous studies have found that children with large home libraries are more likely to do well at school and in their later careers. Ella Cohn-Schwartz at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel and her workmates wondered whether the benefits of early book exposure extend into old age.

They analyzed data from over 8000 men and women aged 65 and older without Alzheimer's disease in 16 European countries, who had taken memory tests in 2011 and 2013. The tests included trying to memorize lists of words and naming as many animals as possible in one minute. Participants were asked to recall how many books their family homes contained when they were children: no books, one shelf(about 25 books), one bookcase (about 100 books), two bookcases or more.

Those who grew up with larger book collections performed better in all memory tests. They also showed slower cognitive decrease, with a smaller drop in their test scores between 2011 and 2013. This may be because their early book exposure encouraged them to read more, which in turn improved their "cognitive reserve", says Cohn-Schwartz.

The findings remained the same when the researchers made adjustments for the participants' wealth, education, physical health and other factors. This suggests that large home libraries are not just a sign of having more money, they can also protect the brain in various ways, says Cohn-Schwartz.

Moreover, children who grow up at homes filled with books are probably also encouraged to take up other wholesome activities, doing sports, for example, which could also improve their cognitive reserve according to Ralph Martins at Edith Cow an University in Perth, Australia.

    1. (1) Why did Ella and her workmates perform the study?
A . To explain the benefits of early book exposure. B . To prove books make a difference only in our old age. C . To show whether people should read books in old age. D . To test if book exposure in childhood benefits old people.
    2. (2) What can we know about the participants in the study?
A . They reported their early book exposure. B . They grew up at homes filled with books. C . They showed a sign of Alzheimer's disease. D . They were asked to memorize as many animal names as possible.
    3. (3) What can we know from the findings of the study?
A . Setting up a home library needs a lot of money. B . People with early book exposure tended to read more books. C . The findings were affected by participants' wealth, education and physical health. D . The test scores of people who grew up with larger book collections increased between 2011 and 2013.
    4. (4) What's the main idea of the text?
A . Doing sports could improve cognitive reserve. B . People are encouraged to read more books in their childhood. C . Children who grow up at homes filled with books have a better memory. D . Old people with early book exposure tend to have less cognitive decrease.
四、第二部分,阅读,第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
  • 15.  阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

By being involved in your community improvement, you can gain a sense of achievement. Oftentimes, when we feel dissatisfied with how things are done in our community, it can be tempting(有诱惑力的)to pull back entirely from getting involved. The problem is that the road to community improvement depends on the work of tons of volunteers who work tirelessly for improvement. So before you decide how you'll get involved, consider what you'd like to see as a result from your service. Here are a few of the benefits to consider:

You can make small, everyday improvements to your community. You may not notice when the park is looking especially clean.  Living in a community that seems loved and cared-for has a huge impact on our general sense of well-being and happiness.

There are many people who'd like to get involved but don't know how. By seeking out involvement opportunities, you can set a good example and you can also help others find the resources and information they need to get involved.

You can develop good values in your family. Kids are hugely impacted by the values of their parents, so demonstrate to your kids the importance of civic activities by getting involved in community efforts.

Start something big. If you've noticed something going on in your area that you think is a problem, the chances are that others have noticed it, too. Even if they haven't, once it's been brought to their attention, they'll be likely to have an opinion on it. In this way, you can start something big!

    A. Consider your role in the community.

    B. You can set a good example for others.

    C. So why not bring attention to these kinds of issues?

    D. However, you'll notice when it's looking especially dirty.

    E. Local organizations in your community can be of help.

    F. During these times, we tend to feel like our voices don't matter.

    G. Include them in any efforts where it'll be safe for kids to participate.

  • 17.  语法填空:阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Why would someone decide not to eat? We know that the body needs food (function)well. However, many people fast at some time during their lives. Why is this?

Some people fast for political reasons. Mohandas Gandhi, the famous Indian leader, fasted 17 times during his life. For Gandhi, fasting was a powerful political tool. Fasting is also a (spirit)practice in many religions. Every year during the month of Ramadan,  is a religious holiday, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Many Hindus fast  special occasions,  do some Christians and Buddhists.

Of course not everyone fasts for political or religious reasons. Some people (occasion)fast just because  makes them feel better. The American writer Mark Twain thought fasting was the best medicine for common (ill). Another American writer, Upton Sinclair, discovered fasting after years of overeating, indigestion, and headache. His first fast lasted for 12 days. During this time, his headaches and stomachaches went away. Sinclair said that fasting also made him more alert and energetic.

(choose)to go without food can be very dangerous. However, that doesn't stop people (fast)for political, religious, or health reasons.

  • 19.  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Two men, both seriously ill, shared the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon. His bed was next to the only window of the room. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their experiences in the army, and where they had been on vacation. Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods when his world would be broadened and enlivened(有活力的)by all the activities and colors of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers of every color. Grand old trees made everything around more attractive, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all these in great detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by. Although the other man couldn't hear the band, he could see it in his mind's eye as the gentleman by the window pictured it with descriptive words.

Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away. As soon as it seemed appropriate(适当的), the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch(交换), and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself.
