  • 2.  阅读理解

I'm in middle school, and not that good at reading. I am a little behind and hate the books we are made to read. But I want to get better at reading. I don't like being the weakest reader in the class. I want to change. I know I need help when it comes to reading. I'm hopeful that I can overcome (克服) my weakness if I try to find some ways and work hard.

So I go to the library every weekend. Last Saturday I went straight to the Young Adult section to search. There were hundreds of books to choose from. Finally, I saw a cover that was shiny, and it reflected (反射) the light and caught my eye. I saw that it was blue — I liked blue. So I picked it up and read the back. It sounded interesting, although it was the second book in the series, I got it. I read that book in two days, and found it was so attractive, so I read the whole series in a week.

By judging (判断) a book by its cover, I was not only able to pick up a book that became one of my favourites, but I also didn't have to pick up hundreds of books that I may not like. If I never judged a book by its cover, I might have never found that book in the first place.

This advice is suitable for other things in life as well, especially when it comes to people. It's not always exact, but by judging a person by their appearance — the way they dress, talk, and act — you can quickly see if you want to read their general condition by having a conversation with them. If you enjoy them like you enjoy a good book, then you can keep them in your inner circle — the people that you care about and who care about you.

    1. (1) Why does the writer visit the library?
A . He is the weakest reader. B . He begins to like books. C . He needs to borrow a book. D . He hopes to improve his reading skills.
    2. (2) Which can best describe the writer in the text?
      A . Caring and helpful. B . Positive and hard-working. C . Adventurous and unique. D . Outgoing and admirable.
    3. (3) What part of the book attracted the writer at first?
      A . The back. B . The pictures. C . The cover. D . The introduction.
    4. (4) What does the writer probably agree with?
A . What pains us trains us. B . Judging a book by its cover. C . Actions speak louder than words. D . Hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

Have you ever considered all the English expressions that include words about clothes? Let's have a look.

People wear pants to cover the lower part of their bodies. We sometimes say that people who are nervous have ants in their pants. Sometimes, people may get caught with their pants down. They are found doing something they should not be doing. And, in every family, one person takes control. Sometimes a wife tells her husband what to do. Then we say she wears the pants in the family.

Pants usually have pockets to hold things. Money that is likely to be spent quickly can burn a hole in your pocket. Sometimes you need a belt to hold up your pants. If you have less money than usual, you may have to tighten your belt.

I always praise people who can save their money and not spend too much. I really take my hat off to them. Yet, when it comes to my own money, I spend it at the drop of a hat, which means I instantly spend it.

Boots are a heavy or strong kind of shoes. People who are too big for their boots think they are more important than they really are. I dislike such people.

My father is an important person. He runs a big company. He wears a suit and tie, and a shirt with sleeves that cover his arms. Some people who do not know him well think he is too serious and never shows his feelings openly. But I know that my father wears his heart on his sleeve.

    1. (1) What is this passage mainly about?
A . What pants mean in English. B . Some special English expressions. C . Some funny English expressions. D . Some expressions related to clothes.
    2. (2) Which of the following expressions can show someone is nervous?
A . Get caught with one's pants down. B . Have ants in one's pants. C . Wear the pants in the family. D . Burn a hole in one's pocket.
    3. (3) Someone who spends his money at the drop of a hat most probably____.
A . doesn't save money B . earns much money C . never wastes his money D . spends more than he earns
  • 4.  阅读理解

Your eyes pick up colour using a type of cell called cones (视锥) in your retina (视网膜). The same is true for dogs, though our cones aren't exactly the same.

Humans have three types of cones, which enables us to see different shades of red, blue violet (蓝紫色), and green. Dogs have two types of cones that pick up blue-violet and yellow shades. This means that dogs see in a similar way to humans who are red-green colour blind.

"They don't see red or green and they see everything in shades of blue and yellow," says Jay Neitz, PhD, a researcher and professor at the University of Washington.

Humans may have the advantage in colour vision but dogs definitely have us beaten in the area of night vision. This is because dogs' eyes have more light-gathering power than ours. A dog's retina is largely composed (由……组成) of cells called rods. which can sense light, even in very low-light conditions.

Dogs are especially good at sensing movement. "The increased number of rods in the dog's retina also increases their ability to discover movement," Sypniewski says. This ability can help them discover small animals like squirrels.

Dogs have a wider field of vision than humans. Dogs' eyes are set slightly farther apart than humans' eyes, so they can see further to the side in each direction.

Dogs have trouble seeing things very close up. Dogs can see objects clearly if they're at least 13 to 20 inches away from their eyes, "but if the object is closer, the image may be blurry," Sypniewski says. Humans can see objects slightly closer—about 10 inches away from the eye.

Dogs may recognize you by your shape and movement. "If your dog recognizes you from a distance (远处), it is not because it can see the details of your face like a human would, but rather because of your shape or the way you move." Neitz says.

    1. (1) What conclusion can we draw from paragraph 2?
A . Dogs are red-green colour blind. B . Dogs have three types of cones. C . Dogs can only see blue colour clearly. D . Dogs are similar to humans in many ways.
    2. (2) What feature contributes to dogs' catching small animals?
A . Dogs can see things very close up. B . Dogs are skilled at sensing movement. C . Dogs have the advantage in colour vision. D . Dogs can see everything in shades of yellow.
    3. (3) What does the underlined word "blurry" in paragraph 7 mean?
      A . Wrong. B . Big. C . Unclear. D . Moving.
    4. (4) How does your dog recognize you from a distance?
A . By your face. B . By your smell. C . By your voice. D . By the way your walk.

When I was in second grade, I did something that really taught me a lesson. After finishing my homework on a sunny weekend, I was thinking about what to do for fun. Then my best friend, Eric, called me and asked me to go for a bike ride in a park near our school. I readily agreed.

I got on my bike and couldn't wait to fly to the park. As soon as I entered the park, I saw Eric, who was reading a book on a stone bench. How could this fellow be so quiet today? What a rare thing! I shouted to him, "Eric, I'm coming!" But Eric remained the same. This guy became crazy about reading. What book interested him so much?

It was not until I patted him on the shoulder that he looked up. Eric quickly put his book on the bench, smiled at me and said, "I'm so sorry! Now let's start riding!" Then we rode our bikes freely in the vast park. After a while, we went on our own routes to enjoy the fun. Suddenly, I found myself riding to the stone bench where Eric had just sat, and I noticed the book again. It raised my curiosity greatly. I thought to myself, "What kind of book could it be that made him so captivated (着迷)?" I stopped and bent down to pick up the book. Wow! A Little Story, a Big Lesson. This was the book of my dreams! Suddenly, an idea came to my mind: Take the book away secretly!

I looked around, but there was no sign of Eric, so I put the book into my jacket, looked for Eric and deliberately rode my bike past him in the park. I told him that there was something urgent going on at home, so I had to leave first. Eric smiled and said goodbye to me. Then I hurried home on my bike. When I passed the living room, my mother saw me and asked, "What's that bilge (鼓起) in your jacket?" "Oh. Nothing…," I replied. Then I slipped into my room and opened the book.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

    Paragraph 1

    Suddenly, my mother came in.
