Jersey Half Marathon

Giants Head Marathon

This is certainly one of the hardest marathons in the UK, and not just because it rises to 1,000 m above sea level (all in the form of short climbs, might we add).It also passes a quite wonderful huge chalk figure (人像)carved into a hillside near Cerne Abbas.

On Friday March 3, 18-year-old Jordan Stolz became the youngest person ever to win a world speed skating gold medal.
Stolz is from Kewaskum, Wisconsin. He began skating on a small pond in his family's backyard. When he was five years old, he saw speed skaters at the 2010 Winter Olympics on TV. He suddenly became very interested in learning to skate fast.
By the time he was in fifth grade, Stolz had won national championships. In high school, he went to school online so that he could train for up to six hours a day.
Last November, Stolz earned two gold medals during the 2022-23 ISU Speed Skating World Cup, making him the youngest male to win a World Cup race. Then, in February, Stolz won four gold medals at the 2023 World Junior Speed Skating Championships. The medals were for 500-meter, 1,000-meter, and 5,000-meter races, and the team sprint.
Stolz's coach, Bob Corby, says one of Stolz's greatest talents is the way he is able to take the corners in the curving (弯曲的) track at high speeds. "Everyone is extremely impressed with the way he goes around corners," says Mr Corby.
That ability helped him out at the speed skating championships in early March. In the 500-meter race, Stolz passed his opponent, Yuma Murakami, on the final curve. It only took him 34.10 seconds to cover a distance longer than five football fields.
The win made Stolz the youngest person ever to win a world speed skating gold medal. In the 1,000-meter race, he defeated Thomas Krol of the Netherlands, who won the Olympic gold medal for the race in 2022. In the 1,500-meter race, he defeated both Krol and Kjeld Nuis, who won the Olympic gold medal for the event in 2018 and 2022.
Stolz's speed and strength have amazed many people. One of his opponents, Canadian skater Laurent Dubreuil, says he has been trying to imitate the way Stolz goes around corners. Laurent took second place in the 500-meter race. He says Stolz's skating style is "just something that I don't think I've seen in a speed skater before".

Ellie Krieger is a nationally known nutritionist. Her job is to teach people how to make healthy food choices. She believes healthy eating can manage disease and promote overall good health. With her cookbooks, television programs, and podcast, Krieger also teaches people how to follow recipes and prepare delicious food.
A healthy approach includes having fun in the kitchen. "I get to ‘play' with my food when I'm testing and making a recipe," Krieger says. "It's part of my job, and it never gets old." She tries to impart this sense of fun to her TV and podcast audiences. "It's a great feeling to know my work is helping people live healthier lives," she says. "I feel like I am making a difference in the world."
A nutritionist's work goes beyond affecting individuals. It can shape public health, by changing the way society views food, health, and nutrition. Nutritionists like Krieger teach people how to read menus and food labels, and how food is grown and finds its way to the plate. Nutritionists do this work in schools, hospitals, and long-term care facilities.
For Krieger, food is a way to learn about other people and understand different cultures. This is an idea she imparts to kids and parents. "The school cafeteria is a classroom,"she says, "and so is the family dinner table."
It was because of the commitment to family nutrition that Krieger made an effort to address the problem of childhood obesity. She's been part of the School Nutrition Association, and has proved before the House Committee on Agriculture about nutrition and the childhood-obesity epidemic. She even helped plan the lunch menu at her daughter's public school, in New York City.
Krieger's career shows how a nutritionist's work can go beyond the hospital or the doctor's office. "We work in all different fields," she says. "We work in the media, in schools, at markets, with sports teams, in restaurants, in private practices, in government organizations, at food companies, and more!"
Imagine this: Your tonsils（扁桃体） are so inflamed （发炎） that it's hard to swallow. Every swallow is painful. The doctor has a solution: an operation. "Will the operation hurt?" you ask. "Not a chance," the doctor says. That's because a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, or CRNA, will be a part of the surgical team. It's that person's job to help manage the anesthesia (麻醉) that makes patients much less sensitive to pain during surgery.
Throughout history, there have been countless medical breakthroughs and discoveries. Perhaps none has been more significant than the use of anesthesia to deaden the pain of surgery. Some forms put people into a sleeplike state for a short time during routine medical procedures. General anesthesia causes patients to lose consciousness during major operations, such as hip replacements or open-heart surgery. A regional anesthesia numbs only a part of a patient's body, although the person might be awake. Local anesthesia numbs a small area, such as around stitches（缝线）.
Brett Hayes is a CRNA. "If you want an exciting career with direct, hands-on caring for people and saving lives, you won't regret picking anesthesia as a career," he says. "I can see anywhere from one to 15 patients per day, depending on the timing and difficulty of the surgery," Hayes says. "I might finish the day in the obstetrical department, giving anesthesia to an expectant（怀孕的） mother about to deliver a baby," he says. "Rarely are two days the same. If you choose the path to becoming a nurse anesthetist, know that it is long and difficult," Hayes says. "It is, however, worth every minute you'll put into it."
Still, being a nurse anesthetist is much more than knowing which drugs to use or how to monitor them. "In order to be truly successful, you have to connect with people," says Antoinette Padula, Hayes's wife. Also a CRNA, she teaches at Columbia University, in New York City. "It means giving support and encouragement to patients and their loved ones during some of the most critical, often life-changing moments in their lives."
Sports play a large role in millions of lives. As parents, we want to find an activity that our children are passionate (热诚的) about. Let's look at how to encourage kids to play sports.
Let them pick which sport they want to play. Don't force kids to follow in your footsteps. Sports could be a chance to explore those undiscovered passions.
Once they decide to play a sport, take them to an event where that sport is played at a high level. We all remember the athletes we looked up to as a kid and trying to mimic (模仿) their every move.
Praise effort and be supportive. Not all kids are gifted athletes and that's OK. Recognize their hard work and achievements by treating them to enjoyable things like ice cream or a movie outing.
Make sports fun and let kids be kids. Keep in mind how a child's mind works. Let them find the fun in sports and support them as they try new activities and explore their interests.
Be present. The smallest action can have the largest impact (巨大影响). Make it normal to show up for your kids. It's an experience they
will always remember.

When you think about who's responsible for a city's safety, your answer may be police officers, firefighters, emergency response teams. Would you put your local meteorologists (气象学家) in this group? That's the career Ashley Ruiz 1 , and she's now the first female chief meteorologist in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ruiz predicts the 2 for her community.
In 2020, a tornado hit Chattanooga, Tennessee. She said, "Getting out in the community is one of my favorite parts of the job. Meeting the families who saw the 3 and were able to get to 4 --it's amazing, knowing I helped make that happen."
