Life finds me on the Isle of Islay, Queen of the Hebrides. I am the warden(管理员)of The Oa Reserve, a 2,100-hectare nature reserve and working farm owned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
It was always a dream of mine to live in Scotland. The friendly nature of the island communities, the landscape, beautiful coastlines and—above all—the wildlife. The amazing wildlife. So, here I am: living and working on the west coast of Scotland in a dream job. But, things weren't always this way.
My school life never really amounted to much. I didn't go on to higher education and my early working life was sloppy(马虎的),at best. Much of this was due to my disinterest in the work I was doing. I worked in factories, shops, warehouses and even a castle. I was always unsettled and uninspired. I never knew how to channel my interest and passion for nature into a paying job. Wildlife and nature had been part of my life since my youth. I remember my childhood with great fondness: I would read bird books, doodle fact files for each species and get lost in the natural world.
In 2014, the opportunity I so desperately needed finally appeared—a paid trainee ship with Durham Wildlife Trust. I was given all the basic skills and training for habitat control, wildlife surveys and ground management works. In October 2015, I became the reserve warden for the Wildfowl& Wetlands Trust(WWT), where I stayed for just under half a decade. As happy as I was, new opportunities dared me to dream even bigger. The time had come to take my next step, to continue to grow within my career.
So, this is where I am now: living in the middle of a nature reserve, with golden eagles, red deer and hen harriers as neighbors. I feel as if I'm the luckiest man alive.
Who first proposed the holiday for workers? It's not entirely clear, but two workers can make a solid claim to the Founder of Labor Day title.
Some records show that in 1882, Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, suggested setting aside a day for a "general holiday for the laboring classes". But many believe that machinist Matthew Maguire, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday.
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central LaborUnion held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5,
1883. By 1894,23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28,1894, President Grover Clevelandsigned a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.
Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades(游行),picnics and parties—festivitiesvery similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with a street parade to exhibit "the strength and spirits of the trade and labor organizations"of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.
Speeches by important official men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civil significance of the holiday. Still later,by are solution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday before Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to(致力于)the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.
American labor has raised the nation's standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy.
The skies over Latin America's largest city are set to witness a futuristic aerospace revolution after the Brazilian airline Gol reached an agreement that could see it transport regular passengers around Sao Paulo in hundreds of low-cost zero-emission electric air taxis.
Dómhnal Slattery, chief executive of the Dublin-based firm Avolon, which will provide the aircraft to Gol and recently placed an order for 500 of the aircraft from their British manufacturer, admitted helicopters were the "kingdom of the wealthiest".
But the Avolon boss claimed the introduction of VA-X4 eVTOLs [electricvertical(垂直的)takeoff and landing] aircraft to Sao Paulo would be a game changer for regular passengers once the taxis, which look like a futuristic cross between a helicopter and a glider, were delivered in late 2024 or 2025.
"Our basic estimate(估计)at the moment is that the operating cost here for this aircraft will be equal to $1 per passenger over a 25-mile trip,"Slattery told the Financial Times. "Which is almost equal to an Uber ride. "
Few cities are crying out for such a revolution more than Sao Paulo, a sprawling metropolis with more than 12 million citizens and choked by a fleet of 8. 6m vehicles.
In the late 1990s, the congestion(拥塞)became so bad in what is now the world's fifth biggest city after Tokyo, Delhi, Seoul and Shanghai that authorities were forced to introduce a number plate rotation(循环)system for vehicles.
Stephen Fitzpatrick, the head of the British aerospace manufacturer that produces the aircraft, Vertical Aerospace, said the flying taxis would be ideal for Brazil's biggest city and will"transform how we travel around high population density cities that are crowded with traffic".
The Bristol-based Vertical Aerospace was founded in 2016 and promises to pioneer"anew era in vertical transport".
"We'll be looking to Asia after Sao Paulo," Avolon's chief commercial officer,PaulGeaney, told Reuters.

A knock on the door broke the silence. "Thomas, here's a letter for you,"Mom said while pushing the door open. Just as Thomas reached out for the letter, Mom immediately pulled it away and said:"Let me read it for you. "
Dear Thomas,

Go do astonishing things that would change everybody's thoughts about you. Prove yourself. I believe in you.
