A crowd cheered Kunle Adeyanju as he turned off his motorbike engine after completing a tiring 41-day trip. The 44-year-old left London on April 19 and arrived in Nigeria's commercial center Lagos on Sunday after travelling more than 8, 000 miles across 13 countries. He started the impressive journey to raise funds for Rotary International to deal with polio(小儿麻痹症)in his native Nigeria.

Accompanied by a dozen bikers for the last stretch of the journey from the Republic of Benin,

Adeyanju was welcomed by supporters in Ikeja, in central Lagos. Adeyanju, called "Lion Heart" by fans, won popularity among the public by posting daily pictures with comments about his journey on social media. At every stop along the way, he was greeted by enthusiastic supporters.

He did face some challenges, like the one in Mali where one of his wheels broke. "I was standing in the middle of the night, alone in a bush, not knowing what to do, without speaking the language," he said, explaining he had to walk to the nearest village. "Fortunately, the locals helped me." Not all of the challenges he faced were solved smoothly." Mauritania, a country in northwest Africa, was" 'terrible'," he said, after he got robbed of hundreds of euros. "The worst experience, "he added.

The former Shell employee self-funded his trip with $ 20, 400 in savings, hoping to raise up to $ 48 million for Rotary International. "I have been suffering from a lack of sleep lately because I slept only three to four hours per night. But I feel proud because I finished this challenge, " Adeyanju said just after he arrived, wiping the sweat off his face. Adeyanju added that he is now planning to have a possible cycling trip to Ghana or a bike ride to Israel to help raise more funds. And he has another dream:to climb Mount Qomolangma.

Although the northern right whale (Eubalena glacialis) has remained the most endangered of the world's whale species, we removed it from our Top 10 Endangered Species List a few years back. Because of effective conservation regulations, the number of right whales that travel the Atlantic coasts of Canada and the US had rebounded (回升) from an all-time low of 350 to at least 450 by the middle of the 21st century's second decade.

However, the tide of good news for the species now seems to have been reversed, due, apparently, to global climate change. Warming ocean waters, particularly in the Gulf of Marine where the whales often feed, have caused kill-the tiny creatures right whales feed on - to decrease and become more difficult for the whales to find. As a result, right whale reproduction has fallen to an alarmingly low level, deaths due to all causes have increased, with 16 of the huge cetaceans (鲸鱼) found dead in 2017 alone. Researchers are finding evidence of increased levels of stress on the animals. So alarming is the situation that we've decided to put the northern right whale right back at the top of our list.

The right whale got its name because 19th century whalers considered it "right" whale to kill, as it was not only full of valuable whale oil, but it also floated after it was dead, which made it easy to handle and process. As a result, it was driven to near extinction. Though now protected by law, right whales continue to suffer losses due to commercial fishing-and now, increasingly, as a result of global climate change, due to the lack of the tiny crustaceans (甲壳类) on which they feed.

    1. (1) Why was the northern right whale taken off the Top 10 Endangered Species List for a time?
A . Its population was on the rise again. B . Only a few people focused on it. C . It wasn't considered as endangered. D . Many of them settled along Atlantic coasts.
    2. (2) What does the underlined word "reversed" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
      A . Accepted. B . Similar. C . Opposite. D . Protected.
    3. (3) Why does the author mention 16 dead cetaceans in paragraph 2?
A . To show oceans got seriously polluted in 2017. B . To stress cetaceans need to be taken seriously. C . To warn that cetaceans are on the way to dying out. D . To suggest taking measures to protect cetaceans.
    4. (4) What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A . The tiny crustaceans do harm to the right whales. B . The decrease of right whales is related to humans. C . Climate change results from the number of whales. D . Commercial fishing has been forbidden for years.

The American space agency NASA says a spacecraft has entered the sun's outermost atmosphere for the first time. Scientists announced that Parker Solar Probe traveled through the solar atmosphere's outer edge, known as the corona (日冕). They described the entry as a successful touch on the sun.

Unlike Earth, the sun does not have a solid surface. Instead, it is a superheated ball of material held

together by gravity and magnetic ( 磁 的 ) forces. The temperature of the corona is so high that the sun's gravity cannot hold on to it and some solar material escapes from it and goes into space, which causes the solar wind. The solar wind is the flow of charged pieces, known as plasma.

Parker Solar Probe was launched in 2018 which mainly studied the solar wind. The sun is actually a magnetic variable star with solar activity happening nearly periodically. Scientists said being able to study the solar wind and the corona close up could help them better understand "the way the activity causes changes to the planet we live on".

"We  can actually see the spacecraft flying through the coronal structure during a total solar eclipse (日全食)," Nour Raouafi, the project scientist, said, adding that it took them a few months to examine information from the spacecraft and to confirm the result and that the evidence used included data on magnetic fields and the solar wind, as well as images. Scientists reported Parker Solar Probe successfully went in and out of the corona at least three times.

The Parker team said early data also suggested the spacecraft may have entered the corona during its ninth close approach in August, but a further study is needed to make a confirmation. The spacecraft is expected to keep getting closer to the sun and diving deeper into the corona until its final orbit, planned for 2025.

    1. (1) What do we know about the solar wind from the text?
A . It affects the corona's temperature. B . It comes from the sun's outer atmosphere. C . It is caused by magnetic forces. D . It functions as the surface of the sun.
    2. (2) Why did NASA launch Parker Solar Probe?
A . To know how solar activity influences Earth. B . To find out why solar activity happens. C . To take measures to control the solar wind. D . To get more evidence of the solar wind.
    3. (3) What are the scientists' attitude to their findings?
      A . Confused. B . Doubtful. C . Favorable. D . Cautious.
    4. (4) Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A . Parker Uncovers the Secrets of the Solar Wind B . NASA Brought New Discoveries about the Sun C . Spacecraft Touches the Sun for the First Time D . Parker Is Designed to Reach the Sun in 2025

Monday and Tuesday have already come and gone, and it's officially the middle of the workweek. Congratulations on making it halfway through! Here's how to make your Wednesday go as smoothly as possible. Before you know it, Friday will already be knocking on your door.

Prioritize (优先) the difficult assignments. Writer and essayist Nicolas Cole writes about what unproductive people do, including "accidentally" canceling "their hardest tasks." "Unproductive people find every reason in the world to prioritize making another to-do list over digging into their hardest tasks. Productive people do the opposite," Cole writes.

Don't be a computer zombie (僵尸), but head outside for a walk. While letting your eyes glaze over as you struggle through the day can be a tempting option, you'll probably need to take some time away from your desk to truly focus..

Hands off the phone! More time scrolling through social media feeds on your phone means less time crossing things off your to-do list. Try hiding your phone somewhere that isn't in plain view as you work at your desk. Also turn off certain announcements so you have fewer opportunities for distraction.

Hit a roadblock? Think of yourself as someone else.Put some space in between you and your problems to help decrease your anxiety. If that doesn't work for you, imagine that your friend is in the situation instead.

Whether you love your job or are just getting by, work shouldn't be your everything. Revisit that page-turner you stopped reading a while back, spend time with family or friends, or get back in touch with your hobby at a class after work.

    A. Do something to enjoy life outside of work. B. If you worked, you have a sense of completeness. C. So go outside for a quick walk and a breath of fresh air. D. It can create a relaxing Wednesday routine. E. It might just be out of sight, out of mind. F. Don't put them off for you won't be able to bury them forever. G. Science says that thinking of yourself in the third person can help you prevent stress.

I suppose everyone has a particular childhood Christmas that stands out more than any other. For me, it was the year that the Burlington factory closed down. Small child as I was, the events of that Christmas will live forever in my heart.

My father, who had been employed at Burlington, never, let us know that we were having financial difficulties. We knew only that our daddy, who usually worked long, difficult hours, was now home more than we had ever remembered.

Mama, a homemaker, now sought work in the local textile mills, but jobs were scarce. Therefore, daddy's unemployment check would now be our family's only source of income. I don't know for sure how they managed, but somehow they did. They made sure they scraped together enough money to buy each of us a Barbie doll. For the rest of our presents, they would rely on their talents, using waste materials they already had.

While dark, rough hands sawed, hammered and painted, flexible fingers fed dress after dress after dress into the sewing machine. Barbie-sized clothes for every imaginable occasion pushed forward from the old machine. Where we were while all of this was taking place, I have no idea. But somehow my parents found time to pour themselves into our gifts, and the excitement of Christmas was once again born for the entire family.

That Christmas Eve, the sun was just setting over the distant horizon when I heard the roar of an unexpected motor in the driveway. Looking outside, I could hardly believe my eyes. Aunt Charlene and Uncle Buck had driven all the way from Georgia to surprise us. Packed tightly in their car, as though no air was needed, sat my three cousins. I also couldn't help but notice many gifts for all of us, all neatly packaged and tied with beautiful bows. They had known that it would be a difficult Christmas, and they had come to help. The next morning we awoke to more gifts than I ever could have imagined — mountains of gifts among all that excitement and laughter.

    注意:
    1. 所需词数应为 150 左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Daddy decided not to give us his gifts.

    ……

They were wooden boxes that can be used as a house to store a Barbie doll.
