Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and the 4 minutes to go from one class to another isn't really a lot of time even for a quick boy like me. Today, I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, "Just be on time tomorrow, or you'll have detention(放学后留校)."

After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, "A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person." We just did drawings today, but I know it's going to be great. I like drawing.

I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today, we wrote about ourselves. The teacher asked us to just write what we thought, and we would pay attention to punctuation(标点符号) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good one, and the teacher said I had used good images to communicate my feelings.

Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with students I didn't know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch, I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it's a skill we need in every class.

At Beijing's Palace Museum, it sometimes seems that time stands still, but the clocks keep ticking at a small workshop there. This is where clock conservator (文物修复员) Qi Haonan works. .

As part of the fourth generation of conservators to repair and restore antique (古老的) clocks at the museum since 1949, Qi has returned more than 100 clocks to their former glory.

After having majored in mechanical automation during his university studies, Qi joined the cultural relics restoration department at the Palace Museum in 2005. "In the beginning, everything in the palace was new to me. It made me excited to even think about repairing antique clocks," the 41-year-old told China Daily. But reality soon weakened his warmth. There is a rule at the museum: For the first year you can look, but not touch. From 8 a. m. to5 p. m. every day, he checked and took apart watches and clocks collected from his friends to practice. After a year of repeated work, he could finally get his hands on the clocks in the museum and get a better understanding of the job. To him, restoring such clocks doesn't mean making them look brand-new. Through cleaning and restoration, he tries to keep them in their original form, bringing back their former function.

Qi still remembered the excitement he felt when the hands of his first repaired clock began to move. It was a French clock, which took him a month to restore. "What amazes me most about these clocks is that they combine the scientific advances, technological precision (精确) and trends in decorative art of their particular times," Qi told China Daily.

Although the antique clock repairing special skills at the Palace Museum were listed as a national intangible (非物质的) cultural heritage in 2014, it was still a little-known skill and the specialty was in short supply of professionals. Until 2016, a 3-part TV documentary, Masters in the Forbidden City, made it possible to the public.

Qi started posting videos about the antique clocks on social media in 2019, giving viewers a look into the work. "With rising attention and influence, antique clock restoration can not only be further developed, but also expanded to more museums which house antique clocks and watches," Qi told China Daily.

    1. (1)  What can be known about the clock conservator Qi Haonan?
A . He began to work at the Palace Museum in 1949. B . He learned how to restore antique clocks at university. C . He has decided to rescue the cultural relics restoration. D . He is part of the fourth generation of clock conservators.
    2. (2)  Why did Qi Haonan lose a bit of warmth at the beginning of his work?
A . He couldn't touch the antique clocks. B . He was asked to do much repeated work. C . He had to collect clocks from his friends. D . He didn't understand the meaning of restoration.
    3. (3)  What does restoring antique clocks mean to Qi Haonan?
A . Keeping them clean and brand-new. B . Making them more beautiful and valuable than ever. C . Getting them back to their original form and function. D . Combining scientific advances and technological precision.
    4. (4)  Which word can best describe the future of antique clock restoration?
      A . Worrying. B . Uncertain. C . Hopeless. D . Promising.

Some scientists have traced the increase in earthquakes to human activities, especially in areas not known for the presence of fault lines or past seismic (地震的) activity. The idea of humans causing earthquakes may seem strange at first. After all, you can run around your backyard and jump up and down as you want, and the ground isn't going to start shaking. However, scientists have identified a variety of large scale human activities that can result in earthquakes.

Scientists have confirmed over 700 places where human activities have caused earthquakes over the last century. While many human-related earthquakes are small and don't cause much damage, some of them can be serious and dangerous. In fact, scientists believe human activities have caused earthquakes with magnitudes as high as 7. 9 on the Richter scale.

Scientists believe that most human-related earthquakes are the result of mining. As companies drill deeper and deeper below the earth's surface to get natural resources, holes left behind usually cause instability (不稳固) which leads to earthquakes. Another human activity leading to earthquakes is fracking (水力压裂) for oil and gas, including the high pressure waste water processing that usually goes with fracking. In this process, water, sand and chemicals are pressed underground under high pressure to break rocks to release natural resources.

Building large dams can also cause earthquakes. Many people died as a result of a big earthquake caused by millions of tons of water that had been collected in a reservoir after a large dam was built over a known fault line.

These are not the only human activities that can result in earthquakes, though. Scientists point out that earthquakes can also be caused by other human activities, such as construction of skyscrapers and nuclear explosions.

There is no doubt that human activities have contributed a lot to social and economic development, but for our own benefit, we humans had better not push nature too hard, or we will have to pay a price.

    1. (1) What does the underlined part "fault lines" in paragraph 1 probably refer to? .
A . Places with active human activities. B . Places connected with natural balance. C . Areas where natural resources are rich. D . Areas where earthquakes tend to happen.
    2. (2)  What do mining and gas producing have in common?
A . They break the balance of nature. B . They destroy the stability of rocks. C . They do much damage to the earth's surface. D . They use high pressure to get natural resources.
    3. (3) What is the author's attitude towards human activities?
      A . Objective. B . Supportive. C . Doubtful. D . Responsible.
    4. (4)  What does the author mainly tell us in the passage?
A . All the earthquakes are caused by humans. B . Humans are responsible for certain earthquakes. C . Nature punishes humans by means of earthquakes. D . Much progress has been made on earthquake research.

I grew up in the countryside of Poland. It's an area where skiing is popular, but my family was poor. I couldn't afford to ride the ski lift, so I used to hike up with the skis on my back.

K2(乔戈里峰)is called "death mountain". You may hear sad stories: For every four people who reach the top, one dies. I was too afraid to even think about skiing down it.

But that changed after a training exploration to Broad Peak. I got a clear look at K2's massive face, and it inspired me. Over time, my skills improved and, by 2017, I didn't feel the fear anymore. I began preparations.

I love nature, and I love setting goals. To be the first to do it just adds to the challenge. Fear is an important part of life, but to ski down K2, I had to stop being afraid. At the base camp, I felt cam and prepared. There were doubts-I just knew I could do it. But there were challenges. At the third base camp, 7, 000 meters up, my safety guide suffered serious back pain. We waited for 36 hours before he got better, and we decided to continue. In total, it took about 3 days to reach the top.

For many climbers, getting to the top of K2 would be the defining moment of their lives.  Skiing down a mountain demands patience and endurance(耐力).

The most dangerous part was the Messner Traverse. It's pure ice, up to a 75-degree angle in places, with drops on either side. You need to keep your tums and movements smooth with confidence. No one had attempted it before, so it was a relief(宽慰)to cross it. When I eventually skied into camp, I simply lay in the snow, emotionally and physically tired out.

I'm so proud of what I achieved. No one thought it could be done. It taught me the value of patience and that nobody else can make your dreams come true.

     A. Have you ever tried extreme sports?

     B. It turned out that this was good practice.

     C. But for me, it was where the real challenge began.

D Even the best ski mountaineer thought it impossible.

     E. In total, going down the mountain took about 7 hours.

     F. Why attempt such an impressive and difficult achievement?

     G. If you overcome fears and difficulties, you will surely make it to the top.

三、完形填空。阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)

While I was riding a bike, I noticed a man about a half mile in front of me. He was traveling at a lower speed, I decided to 1  him. I had about one mile to go on the road before turning around.

I started to ride faster, and every block, I2  closed the distance. Finally, I 3 him and passed him. He was not even 4  that we were in a race, but I felt like a 5

After I made it, I 6  that I had been so focused on competing against him that I had 7 my turn, and that I had gone nearly six blocks past it and had to turn around.

Isn't that what 8 in life? We spend most of our time competing with neighbors, friends and family, trying to beat them or trying to be more9 than them—while in the first place there was10 a competition.

12  competition is a continuous process, a never-ending cycle, a race of life. No matter what you do, someone will always be 13  you: someone with a better job, a nicer car and more money.

Feel 14  for what life has offered you. Stay focused on your 15 , and live a healthy life. There is no competition in destiny. Run your own race of life and wish others well!

Every year the world unites together on World Animal Day on October 4 for the improved treatment and well-being of animals everywhere. It started in 1931 in Florence, Italy when ecologists got together (promote)awareness of endangered species. Since then, the yearly event has been  (use)as a way to connect animal welfare (福利)organizations, businesses and community groups to raise awareness for their work and fundraise.

In the past decades, China has done much to improve welfare of domestic and wild animals. The biggest symbol of China's official protection of animals can be found in the Wildlife Protection Law. First signed in 1988 and revised several times over the years, the law forces people to obey the protection of endangered species as well as ensuring a balance between the needs of wild animals and people.

This balance can be most  (easy)examined in the case of Asian elephants. Asian elephants, although greatly treasured across different Asian  (culture), have become endangered due  hunting for their tusks (象牙). Asian elephants in China are mostly found in Yunnan province. Difficulties have arisen as the government has worked to strike a balance between protecting the endangered elephants and making up for farmers  crops are eaten by these wild animals.

Through changes to the Wildlife Protection Law, the government has improved  (harmonious)between local people and wildlife through policies (政策)and guidelines for the construction of separation facilities to prevent damage by wild animals.

In the spirit of World Animal Day, we can think more of ways to better protect both the animals around us and  in the wild. We believe living conditions of wild animals are  (get)better and better.

It was a beautiful sunny day when a moving van (小型货车) pulled onto the tree-lined street. Mark and Mindy stepped out of the van and looked at their new home with pride. They had been saving for a long time to buy their first house together and were very excited to go on a new visit.

Within an hour they had removed a number of boxes and were pleased with their progress. The sky had begun to darken slightly, but the weather was still pleasant.

Then Mindy heard it-even felt it. There was a crack of thunder and then a bolt of lightning. Mindy and Mark immediately froze and looked at each other, then looked at the boxes lying on their lawn. They hurriedly got their belongings indoors, but not before getting caught in the rain.

Mark and Mindy stood in their living room, wet from head to toe, surrounded by what were now very wet oxes. Then, Mark noticed a pool of water in the hallway.

Then he found that there was water dripping from the ceiling. "We can have someone fix it," Mindy said. "I'll grab a bucket to catch the water for now."

A moment later, Mark heard a scream and raced into the kitchen just in time to see a mouse running across the floor. Mindy was frozen with fright.

"Don't worry! We can take care of that!" Mark id, trying to sound s possible. "Let's go and open om of the boxes. That will make u feel better."

Mark and Mindy made their way to the living room but when they opened a box holding their kitchen things they found that all of their plates, bows and cups were broken. They looked at each other in low spirits.

"What can we do now?" Mindy asked.

It seemed that their first day in their new home was not turning out to be the happy occasion they had expected. Just then, they both heard a noise.

     注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 开头已给出,请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

     Paragraph 1:

There was a soft knock at the door.

     Paragraph 2:

The noise of the mouse was coming from the upper floor.
