I gave a talk at a small conference in northern Virginia in 2016. I began by admitting that I'd never had a social-media account; I then outlined arguments for why other people should consider removing social media from their lives. The event organizers uploaded my talk to YouTube. Then it was shared repeatedly on Facebook and Instagram and, eventually, viewed more than five million times. I was both pleased and annoyed by the fact that my anti-social-media talk had found such a large audience on social media.
This event is typical of the love-hate relationships many of us have with Facebook, Instagram, and other social-media platforms. On the one hand, we've become cautious about attention economy, which destroys social life gradually and offends privacy in the name of corporate (公司的) profits. But we also benefit from social media and hesitate to break away from it completely. Some people argue that high risk is the sport's major problem, but in fact, many Olympic events are also dangerous. The widespread international participation has made it easier for the sport to take the next steps towards a place at the Summer Games. So Los Angeles 2028 is not beyond the bounds of possibility.
Thousands of people around the world are helping to save the world's biggest fish. By taking photos of whale sharks, those helpful citizens are providing researchers with critical information about whale sharks' locations and migration routes.
Whale sharks are endangered, with their populations worldwide having decreased by more than 50% over the past 75 years. Although protected in many countries, they are still killed by the fishing industry－caught intentionally and accidentally, especially in tuna (金枪鱼) fishing areas where whale sharks and tuna swim close together. Whale sharks are also threatened by oil and gas drilling, ship strikes and climate change.
To help protect the species, Australian biologist Brad Norman co-founded The Wildbook for Whale Sharks, a photo identification database that went online in 2003. Photography lovers, scientists and whale shark tour operators around the world contribute photos of whale sharks to the system, which uses NASA technology to map their locations and track their movements. Today, the database holds over 70,000 photos from more than 50 countries.
Pictures submitted to The Wildbook are analyzed by scanning the spots on the animal's skin, which are as unique as human fingerprint, says Norman. Then it identifies the shark by searching the database for a matching pattern. This way, they can figure out which whale shark is where.
The data on whale shark locations and migration routes help scientists make strategies to protect whale habitat. "It's so important to have the public assist with our project." says Norman . He hopes to see more people join to help find out where the whale sharks go to mate. Protecting their breeding (繁殖) grounds is the "one big thing" needed to save the species in the long run. The help from thousands of citizens gives him a better chance of making that possible.
Exam Anxiety
Has this ever happened to you? You've been studying hard for your midterm, but when you walk into your exam, your mind goes blank, your heart races fast, you get sweaty palms and find it hard to breathe.
Everyone feels stressed during exams. Usually, it results from a fear of failure, lack of adequate preparation time and bad experiences taking tests in the past. This is normal and often helps you work harder, think faster and generally improve your performance. You may also feel that other people are managing the exam better than you. This can cause you to feel that your mind has "gone blank" on information you know you have revised.
Some choose to ignore the problem, while others don't review because they think they will do badly anyway and even miss exams due to the anxiety. It can also be really easy to think that if you don't try and then you fail, you won't feel as bad as if you fail after trying really hard.
So what can you do to fight against the negative mindset and stay calm before and during your test?Yes, this seems obvious, but it's worth repeating. If you feel confident that you've prepared thoroughly, you'll feel more confident walking into the test. The second tip is simple: just start. The blank page can maximize your anxiety. You can always go back and change things later if needed, but a few quick answers can get the ball rolling. Besides, allocating(分配) your time is equally important. Look through the whole test before getting started. Mentally allocate how much time you'll spend on each section. If there's time to recheck, even better.

After thirty years in the classroom of primary school, I have come to realize that the tiniest of gestures can make a huge1to a child. This is one such story.
I received an invitation to2an official conference on education at our local high school. As I entered the3, there was a girl who looked 4. I knew she had been a student of mine. I racked my brain (绞尽脑汁) trying to5 her name. My inability to do so made me feel 6, as I have always been able to recall 7students.

She lost her parents at an early age and then was sent to live with foster (代养) parents. Sarah was unhappy, often in trouble and often in the office. The Tianshan Tuomuer Grand Canyon is about 25 kilometers long from east to west and 20 kilometers wide from north to south. It consists of three main(valley) in the shape of the Chinese character "川".(locate) in the northwest of Xinjiang at the foot of Tuomur Peak, it is also known"Kuduluk Grand Canyon", means "thrilling and mysterious" in Uygur (维吾尔语).
