Shenzhen is a city in South China. It is not very big, but it has attracted people of the whole country and the whole world as well. Just about twenty years ago, it was only a small fishing village. There were not many people there. Most of them lived on fishing. Things have greatly changed since the 1980's. It became the first special economic zone in China. Because of the opening policy, economic changes between China and the outside world have increased greatly. People can come and go easily between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Both foreigners and Chinese have built a lot of factories, companies and tourists' there. People all over the country have come to find jobs. Many of them have settled down in this new booming city. Shenzhen is developing so fast that it has become a well-known metropolis in China.
Mrs. Wang was seventy- eight years old. Her husband worked in a post office. The next year her husband had a long holiday, so they made a journey to another city, their bus hit a rock and began to burn. The husband broke the window and helped his wife get off, but he died in the burning bus. And now the old woman has lived a lonely life for 6 years. She often walks near the garden or sits on a chair quietly. She had a dog and liked it very much. But she lost it one morning. Yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Wang was sitting on a chair near the garden while a boy was coming to her with a dog. The old woman saw the lovely dog and asked the boy, "Does your dog bite?" "No, it doesn't," answered the boy. Having heard this, the old woman began to touch its head. Suddenly it bit her hand and she began to shout at the boy, "Why did you fool me?" "I've never fooled you, madam," said the boy. "My dog doesn't bite anybody, but that dog isn't mine!"
James is five years old now. His father is a worker and his mother works in a shop. They live outside the town. His parents go to work in the morning and come back in the evening. The boy has to stay at home alone. There are more than ten children around his house, but some of them are too young and the others have to go to school. So the boy has few friends and he feels sad.
Last month the Hunts moved to the house next to theirs. James went to visit them on the first day. Mr. and Mrs. Hunt were kind to him and they have a four-year-old daughter named Kate. The boy made friends with her at once and her parents were happy. The two children play together when their parents are at work. And James no longer feels lonely.
It was cold yesterday. It snowed hard and the children couldn't play outside. And they stayed in Kate's room. At first they looked at the picture—books and then Kate found a coin in a box. They began to play with it. The girl put it into her mouth and she swallowed (吞) it. After half an hour Mrs. Hunt called her husband at once and then took the girl to the hospital.
"The Hunts must be poor, I think." James said to his parents after supper.
"Oh? Why?"
"Kate swallowed a coin and they tried to get it out!"
Years ago, when we first went to Canada, thought were driving through Montana to Colorado with our two children. We thought we'd find a hotel on the way without1ahead of time. As it was getting late, we started looking for a hotel, only to find that all the hotels were full.
2, around 9 pm, we stopped at a gas station to fill up on gas. My husband told the woman at the counter that we were 3 to find a hotel. She told us it would be 4 at such late time in a busy season. Noticing that we were worried, she said we could spend the night at her home nearly.
Though surprised at her 5 we gladly accepted it. She then called her son to come and lead the way, since she had to work until midnight. Soon a pick-up truck arrived and we 6 it. When we reached their home, her husband 7 us. He invited us to have coffee and we chatted when8 his wife. She came past 12. We asked if we could leave 9 in the morning so as to disturb them. They said we were now guests and we'd have to have breakfast with them.
Next morning, around the table were many people, and we were10 that they would take in total 11 from a different country. After breakfast, when we were 12 , my husband asked if he could offer some 13 . But they said no. Then we left. We kept in 14for many year. Later we lost contact, but over the years we have never forgotten their 15.
