Have you ever considered the way you spend your money? What do you buy? When do you buy? It is important to use your money wisely. Then, you will have enough for the things you want. You can make smart decisions about your money. All it takes is some careful, smart thinking.

One way to be smart with your money is to shop around before you buy. Visit more than one store, check the prices at each store, and try not to be in a hurry to buy. You don't have to buy at the first store you visit; another store might have what you want at a lower price. You can even check online and compare prices.

Another way to be smart with your money is to wait for a sale. Many stores offer special discounts. For example, suppose you want to buy a camera. Wait until a store has a sale. You can save 20 percent, 30 percent, or more on the price of the camera by waiting for a sale. Some stores also offer a discount if you buy more than one of an item. So, look for sales offering a lower price per item if you buy two of that item. You could save money.

You can also use your money wisely by buying larger sizes of things. For example, large bags of dog food usually cost less per pound than small bags cost. A large pack of pens usually costs less per pen than a small pack of pens. So, even though you may spend more on a large size, you are really saving money per item.

You can learn to be smart with your money. It takes some practice, and it takes patience. You cannot always have what you want right away. But if you are patient, you will save money. Then, you will have more money to spend on what you want.

    1. (1) Which is one way to save money?
A . By waiting for sales. B . By shopping at only one store. C . By shopping in a hurry. D . By buying small packages of things.

      A . Mean. B . Patient. C . Wealthy. D . Lazy.
    4. (4) What is the writer's opinion in this text?
A . Being careful with money is wise. B . It is not important to save money. C . Comparing prices takes tricks. D . It isn't a good idea to shop online.
    5. (5) What is the writer's purpose in writing the text?
A . To share a personal story. B . To explain how to do something. C . To introduce the things on sale. D . To show how to get somewhere.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people under lockdown feel lonely and bored. "There is a loneliness epidemic," said John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University, US.

So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic.

According to their new study, reducing loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration (注意力) and skill.

When people are absorbed in what they are doing, they enter a state called "flow", Dattilo explained. "Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that requires us to concentrate fully to use our skills."

To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you're trying to create a complex (复杂的) computer program but your skill level is low, then you're likely to feel stressed instead of achieving "flow". On the contrary (相反地), if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and "flow" will not appear, either.

If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.

"When we enter a state of flow, we become focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment," Dattilo said. "When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed." However, watching television usually doesn't help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren't any challenges.

"People tend to thrive (茁壮成长) on healthy activities and challenge," said Dattilo. "We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives."

    1. (1) What did Dattilo study?
A . Why people feel lonely. B . How to reduce loneliness. C . What enjoyable activities are. D . Why people like a new challenge.
    2. (2) How do people feel when they enter the "flow" state?
A . They are lonely and bored. B . They feel stressed and tired. C . They are concentrating and happy. D . They feel time passes slowly.
    3. (3) Which of the following could take the place of the underlined "are absorbed in"?
A . are good at B . are proud of C . are focused on D . are relaxed about
    4. (4) Which activity is possible to help people achieve flow?
      A . Writing. B . Watching TV. C . Chatting. D . Eating nuts.
    5. (5) What can we do to reduce loneliness during lockdown, according to Dattilo?
A . Follow a healthy lifestyle. B . Learn as many skills as possible. C . Complete impossible tasks. D . Do something enjoyable and challenging.

Zologial Sociey of London (ZSL), which runs London Zoo, brought together 16 scientists from different organizations to make a full "heath heck" on 215 miles of the Thames. The results of the first-ever State of the Thames Report have been shown to the public and there's both good and bad news for London's main waterway.

First up, since the Thames was pronounced "biologically(生物学地)dead" in1957, the number of animals and plants growing in and around the river has increased greatly. Natural habitats(栖息地)are also on the increase, some of which can help in the fight against climate(气候)change.

It's not all good news though—like everywhere else, the Thames is influenced by climate change, mainly through changes in water temperature and sea levels. The Thames is increasing in temperature at an average(平均数)of 0. 2℃ each year, changing the natural environment.

Water levels are also rising in the Thames—at Silvertown. There has been an average increase of 4. 26 mm per year since 1990, which makes London more likely to be flooded.

As with pretty much everywhere on Earth, the Thames needs climate change to be stopped in order to make itself a living river in the future.

The Environment Agency has put together the Thames Estuary 2100 Plan which sets out a long-term plan for dealing with the influence of rising sea levels for the rest of this century, in order to protect London from floods.

James Brand, Thames Estuary 2100 Advisor at the Environment Agency said, "We are glad to support the State of the Thames Report. If we are going to stop climate change, nature needs to be at the heart of our activities, both in slowing the pace of future change and dealing with the changes that we are already seeing. "

    1. (1) What did the 16 scientists do with the Thames?
A .  They did an examination of it. B . They gave an introduction to it. C . They brought new animals to it. D . They organized a clean-up of it.
    2. (2) What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A . The way animals are raised. B . The development of natural habitats. C . The meaning of "biologically dead". D . The welcome changes to the Thames.
    3. (3) What has happened to the Thames?
A . It has caused many floods. B . Its temperature has been rising. C . Its plants have become fewer and fewer. D . It is home to a smaller number of animals.
    4. (4) Why was the Thames Estuary 2100 Plan made?
A . To record the rising sea levels. B . To help rebuild London. C . To explain the importance of nature. D . To fight against climate change.
    5. (5) Where can the text be found?
      A . In a storybook. B . In a health magazine. C . In a research paper. D . In a geography textbook.

I'd never thought of flying as something I would ever actually want to do in my free time until my family bought me what's called a ‘flying experience day' as a birthday present. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't like some of my friends, who would start shaking with fear at the thought of going in a plane of any size. I'd actually always looked forward to flying off somewhere on holiday, especially that feeling you get when the plane's just taking off. But flying a plane was something other people did, not me.

I started researching the experience day online straight away. The little aircraft I was going to fly in could only go up to 3. 000 meters, which is quite low when you realize big jets fly closer to 10, 000 meters. I found out there was a half-hour talk from the instructor(教练)about safety and the controls. This seemed more than enough to me, as I was only going to be in the air for about the same amount of time, which I couldn't quite believe. My parents were amazed that something like that was available for a twelve-year-old girl, but I'm very pleased it was.

On the day, I was quite nervous but Sheena, my instructor, was very calm, which helped a lot.

She took the controls as we took off, of course. It appeared to take ages to get high up, but it was only actually a minute or two, and then I took the controls. I was so excited, I wasn't really listening to what Sheena was saying. I was hoping to see my house but it was hard to work out where everything was from the air. Even though we were flying at 280 kilometers per hour, you could hardly tell we were moving when you looked down.

I'm now so into flying that I'm considering it as a career. I'll need to get a pilot's license, of course, and I'm happy to save up for more classes to do this. It was such fun that I'd love to do it every day and get paid for it, too. The company that organizes experience days keeps sending emails about train driving and other things, but I only want more of one particular kind of experience now!

    1. (1) How did the writer feel about flying before she did the flying experience day?
A . Scared of flying in a small plane. B . Confident that she would be good at it. C . Uninterested in taking it up as a hobby. D . Uncertain about what it would feel like.
    2. (2) What surprised the writer as she was researching the flying experience day?
A . How young the pilot can be. B . How long the flight will take. C . How high the plane would reach. D . How much training is needed.
    3. (3) What does the writer say about being in the air?
A . The plane appeared to travel very slowly. B . Seeing where she lives was fantastic. C . It was too noisy to hear the instructor. D . The plane seemed to climb very quickly.
    4. (4) What does the writer hope to do in the future?
A . Learn how to fly other planes. B . Have more flying lessons just for fun. C . Try different 'experience days'. D . Do business offering experience days.
    5. (5) What's the text mainly about?
      A . A 12-year-old girl's rise to fame. B . Preparation work needed for flying a plane. C . Process of controlling a flying plane. D . A 12-year-old girl's first flying experience.

I'm studying English at a school in the UK at the moment and having a wonderful time, meeting new friends and getting to know the country. We have the chance to go on lots of trips and recently we visited the famous town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Our English teacher wanted us to do more than that.

Before we went, we prepared for the trip. Some students did one on the environment, while another group wrote some questions about hobbies and interests. There were five groups altogether. I'm really interested in business studies and my group had questions to ask local businesspeople and shopkeepers.

We were there for the whole day and we all thought it would be best to do the research in the morning. When we arrived in Stratford, each group went off around the town to ask local people their questions. It was really good fun. We had the chance to practice our English and the local people were very friendly and helpful. In fact, they told our teacher how polite they thought we all were.

Stratford is a lovely town and we spent the afternoon enjoying the sights. After lunch we looked around Holy Trinity Church, and of course we visited the house where the world's most famous playwright was born and grew up. I got home feeling tired but I had had a fantastic day out.

Besides being fun, it was a great way to practice our English, and not only because we were able to speak to local people. We took it in turns to stand up and explain to the other groups what our questions were about and the things we found out. We all enjoyed it so much that we're hoping to repeat it later in the year in a new location.

    A. However, many of the shops were closed.

    B. We could then relax in the afternoon and have a tour.

    C. In class the next day we presented the results of our surveys.

    D. But we didn't just walk around the town taking photographs.

    E. On the other hand, the weather was better than we had expected.

    F. That was followed by some fun boating on the river before we left.

    G. We worked in teams and created some surveys on different subjects.
