The new railway line linking China and Laos (老挝) opened to traffic on December 3, 2021. All the passengers on the train were very excited.
The line is 1, 035 kilometers long and it runs between Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, and Vientiane ( 万象), the capital of Laos. It takes about 10 hours to get to Vientiane from Kunming. This line, with a top speed of 200 kilometers per hour, has 50 stations.
Engineer Ouyang Qiang took part in construction (建设) of the new line. "Each station along the line has a special and beautiful view." he said, adding that Yunnan has pleasant weather in all seasons and the views are fantastic all year round.
Hang Dianhua, 76, was on the first train on Friday from Kunming to Xishuangbanna. "One of my students took part in this project. It's a proud event for China. I hope to take the train with my daughter and two granddaughters who live in Beijing in the future. " Hang said.
Jaruwan comes from Thailand. Now she works in Yunnan. She was also a passenger on the train. She believes fruit from Thailand can be sent faster and cheaper to China. And at the same time, the new tourism routes (路线) might be developed thanks to the line. More Chinese people will take the railway to Laos, and then visit Thailand.
The China Laos Railway is part of a bigger plan to connect Kunming all the way with Singapore.
Margaret Ann Bulkley was born around 1789, in Ireland. She had big dreams. "I want to be a doctor!" But two hundred years ago a girl couldn't become a doctor. Her uncle, James Barry, was a great painter. And his friend General Miranda had a library with more than 6, 000 books. Margaret loved reading there. Her intelligence impressed him. Years later, her uncle James Barry died, leaving her some money. It was enough to study to be a doctor.
"But a girl can't become a doctor," said Margaret sadly.
"Yes, you can!" said General Miranda. "All you have to do is to disguise as a boy." Margaret really wanted to be a doctor. So she cut off her long hair, practiced speaking in a deep voice, and put on boy's clothes. She also named herself James Barry.
From then on, Margaret Ann Bulkley disappeared. She became James Barry and entered Edinburgh University. He took 13 subjects and worked all through the summer when the other students went on holiday.
Barry graduated in 1812 and decided to join the British Army. In his life, Dr. James Barry travelled all over the world, helping to save many lives. Before retirement, Barry had risen to the second highest medical officer in the British Army. Barry improved the conditions for not only wounded soldiers but also the local people, and performed the first recorded successful caesarean section (剖宫产) in Africa. The secret Dr. James Barry kept for over fifty years was only known after his death in 1865.

These years, online eating shows, or Mukbang (吃播), have got increasing popularity. Many people like to watch them when they are eating or(feel) hungry.
In fact, the online eating shows came from South Korea. Many hosts of such shows become popular for their ability (eat) large amounts of food. But these shows have also received criticism (批评)for their waste of food.
On Aug. 12, CCTV exposed(曝光)several Chinese hosts who were pretending (假装)to eat large amounts of food while on camera, but actually later threw it away. To stop this practice, many video platforms, including Douyin, Kuaishou and Bilibili, (delete) videos that show food waste, and have posted messages like "stop food waste and eat reasonably".
In June 2020, the United Nations (warn) that the world is facing the worst food crisis (危机) in 50 years. About a third of the world's food (waste) every year. In China, plenty of food (end) up in rubbish bins every year.
For this, many places in China have started to take action. In Shanxi Province, local restaurants have started to serve half portioned ( 半份的) dishes to avoid waste. And in Wuhan, the restaurants have started to use the "N 1 mode". For example, only enough food (order) for nine people at first when a group of 10 people come to eat. More food is only brought to the table if required.
