Located in the northeast of Italy, Venice is wellknown for its cultural treasures, romantic atmosphere (氛围) and unusual livingonwater experience. The city spreads out over 118 islands, which are linked by more than 400 bridges, in the Venetian Lagoon.

Venice's historical center consists of six regions. Italy in the south, the busiest main region, is linked by the Rialto Bridge. The famous stone arch bridge crosses Venice's main waterway—the Grand Canal. When night falls, many tourists enjoy dinner at the outside rabies by the Grand Canal while watching colourfully lit boats going by.

Near the end of the Sshaped Grand Canal lies St. Mark's Basilica, a mustsee. Inside, beautiful mosaics (镶嵌图案) tell stories of Bible figures. Nearby are the Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs. These were made famous by Lord Byron,"I stood in Venice on the Bridge of Sighs, a palace and prison on each hand. "The story has it that if a couple passes under the bridge, their love will last forever.

In the square outside the Basilica, lovers of literature can sit at Caffe Florian, regarded as the oldest coffee house in Europe. Charles Dickens, Henry James as well as Lord Byron enjoyed the drink here.

Art lovers should buy a museum pass and visit some of the city's museums. They can view works by Venetian masters like Giovanni, Titian and Tintoretto.

On five small islands in the Venetian Lagoon, Murano has been home to glassmakers since 1291. Tourists can visit factories, studios and the Glass Museum. Glass artists produce everything from simple souvenir pieces to beautiful works of contemporary art. Only glassworks made using traditional methods on Murano can be called Murano Glass. The nearby island of Burano is famous for lace making and colourful houses. Looking at the colourful houses and kaleidoscopic (万花筒似的) streets makes people feel as if they were walking in the fairy tale.

The City of Water promises beauty of all kinds, and it definitely lives up to its promise.

    1. (1) Why does the author mention Lord Byron's words?
A . To explain why the two places are famous. B . To introduce the famous British poet. C . To show why St. Mark's Basilica is a mustsee. D . To compare the Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs.
    2. (2) What is Murano wellknown for?
      A . Bridges. B . Glassworks. C .  Lace making. D . Colourful houses.
    3. (3) Where should you go in Venice if you love art?
      A . Caffe Florian. B . The city's museums. C . St. Mark's Basilica. D . The Bridge of Sighs.
    4. (4) How does the author think of Murano Glass?
      A . It's simple. B . It's too traditional. C . It's colourful. D . It's very special.

At the end of my third year at university, I still had over 50 meals left in my dining account. So I swiped my meal card until I had nothing left, packed all of the meals and drove to Center City to give them all out to anyone I could find who needed a meal.

When I returned to campus, I wanted to create a formal meal donation program and after months of meetings, I convinced my university to launch this program. But what started with meals quickly evolved into something much greater when I learned about how much food was also going to waste from grocery stores and restaurants in the area.

Approximately 1/3 of all food produced in the United States (126 billion pounds) is thrown in landfills each year. Meanwhile, 40 million Americans are suffering from food insecurity in the US, and 1 in 5 people are suffering in Philadelphia.

My solution was called Sharing Surplus. Then, our team created a transportation network to pick up surplus food on a regular basis and deliver it to local hunger—relief organizations. In the last twelve months, we have delivered more than 75,000 pounds of food to shelters and soup kitchens fighting food insecurity.

Graduating from college soon, I am ready to pursue Sharing Surplus as my full-time job. Now let's talk about Gen Z (those born between 1996 and 2010). Our generation will soon be responsible for the fate of our planet, which is equally exciting and challenging. More than ever, we must look closely at the problems that our society faces today and try to imagine big ideas that can solve them.

    1. (1) What did the author do to make his program much greater?
A . Hold meetings to persuade others to join him. B . Cooperate with local stores and restaurants. C . Buy food from grocery stores for the needy. D . Donate much more of his leftover meals.
    2. (2) What do the figures in Paragraph 3 mean?
A . Some easy measures to reduce food waste.   B . Great potential for turning waste into charity. C . An urgent need for more crops in the United States. D . Big food problems facing the United States.
    3. (3) What can be inferred about Sharing Surplus from Paragraph 4?
A . It has partly changed the industry of food delivery. B . It has helped set up many hunger-relief organizations. C . It has made a great contribution to fighting hunger. D . It has created a more advanced transportation network.
    4. (4) What message does the author seem to convey in the last paragraph?
A . The students in the USA should try to help the poor. B . Gen Z should pursue Sharing Surplus to earn money. C . After graduation, it is important to find a full time job. D . Gen Z should try to solve the existing social problems.

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住宿). I suggested that they should stay at "bed and breakfast" houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.

"We didn't stay at "bed and breakfast" houses," they said, "because we found that most families were away on holiday."

I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought "VACANCIES" meant "holidays", because the Spanish word for "holidays" is "vacaciones". So they did not go to house where the sign outside said "VACANCIES ", which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said "NO VACANCIES", because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!

We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word "DIVERSION" means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word "DIVERSION" on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.

English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said "Thank you" in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise, the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that "Thank you" in French means "No, thank you."

    1. (1) The writer's friends in Spain wanted to get advice about ________.
A . finding places to stay in England B . the way of going to England C . the traffic rules in England D . the chance of learning English
    2. (2) The writer suggested that they stay at "bed and breakfast" houses because ________.
A . they would be able to practise their English B . it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels C . it would be convenient for them to have dinner D . there would be no problem about finding accommodation there
    3. (3) The writer's friends stayed at hotels at last because ________.
A . people there were away on holiday B . there were no such "bed and breakfast" houses in England C . they found there were no free rooms there D . they misunderstood the signs outside the door
    4. (4) When a French man is offered more coffee and he says "Thank you", he really means ________.
A . he just wants to express his politeness B . he wants to show his appreciation C . he doesn't want any more coffee D . he wants to have some more coffee

How to Make the World a Better Place

When you think about people who have made the world a better place, you probably think of famous scientists or great leaders. That is not all the truth. An act of kindness can bring a smile to a person's face even if only for a moment.

    Give away your money.

For example, if you want to help hungry children, you can try to find an international organization that provides food for those in poor areas. Every cent you give away will mean a lot.

    Help a stranger.

Your small actions can brighten the day of others. Hold the door for someone whose hands are full. Help the blind cross the street. The key is expecting nothing in return for your acts of kindness.

    Care about those you know.

Show the people close to you how much you care about them. Tell them they mean a lot to you. Make a beautiful gift for a friend. Take your husband to his favourite fun place if he has had a hard week.

    Be grateful to others.

Have you had good service in a restaurant? Thank the waiter. Do you have a very good neighbour who is always there when you need her? Tell her how much you appreciate her being in your life.

If a friend needs skills in a certain area, offer your advice. Perhaps she is struggling to set up a computer, and you know how to do that. Offer whatever ability you have, but always remember to be polite.

    A. Share your knowledge.

    B. Keep walking forward.

    C. Small steps, not big ones.

    D. Give your seat on the bus to an old man.

    E. Ordinary people like you and me can also help a lot.

    F. Tell your children how much they mean to you.

    G. Choose charity (慈善机构) that has meaning for you.
