The former CEO of Starbucks, Howard D. Schultz was born on July 19, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. He lived in a neighborhood with low-income families. As a child, Schultz saw his father struggling with money. At the age of seven, his father injured his leg at work and had no medical insurance(保险), so the economic stress on the family left Howard terrible memories of his childhood.
In high school, Schultz played football that earned him a scholarship to Northern Michigan University. After graduation, Schultz had a few jobs before joining Starbucks. At the time there were only three Starbucks stores.
The trip that changed Starbucks and Schultz's career was his trip to Milan. While exploring the place he came across small coffee shops, where the owners developed personal relationships with their customers, even calling them by their given names while serving them coffee.
In 1985, Schultz quit Starbucks as his Italian-based coffee experience idea was rejected by the two founders. He then went on to create his own coffee company called "Ⅱ Giornale", Italian for "The Daily".
"In the course of the year I spent trying to raise money, I spoke to 242 people, and 217 of them said no," he wrote about his struggle. "Try to imagine how disappointing it can be to hear that many times why your idea is not worth investing in."
He spent two years creating the coffee culture he had experienced in Italy, at "Ⅱ Giornale". In August 1987, Starbucks was purchased(购买) by "Ⅱ Giornale" for $3.8 million. Starbucks now has an annual sale of over $16 billion.
Once Schultz said, "I cannot offer you any specific secret to success. But my own experience suggests that starting from scratch (白手起家) and achieving much more than what I dream about is quite possible."
If a cat or dog shares your house, I'll guess that you don't refer to the four-footed family member who licks(舔) your face and sleeps on your bed as "it". You probably call them by a name, and refer to them as "he" or "she".
A group of more than 80 people, including Dr. Jane Goodall, have signed a letter calling on the editors of the Associated Press Stylebook to rewrite their guidance so that animals in news stories would be recognized as "she/her/hers and he/him/his when their sex is known, and they, or he/she, or his/hers when their sex is unknown." News organizations often follow the guidance of the AP Stylebook. The signers of this letter hope that when we write about animals in zoos, fields, farms, forests, seas and labs, they are recognized as living beings who feel hunger, fear, happiness and pain. "This update would reflect the fact that animals have feelings, and encourage people to respect and protect them and their rights and interests, and to shape a fairer world," says Jane.
Ben Dreyer, copy chief at Random House, says thoughtful adjustments to our language don't have to wait for a stylebook. "Writers should write the way they see fit to write," he says. "The so-called genderless(无性别的) ‘he' for example is now a thing of the past because writers haven't used it."
Laura Hillenbrand, author of Seabiscuit and other best-selling books, tells us that if we don't refer to animals in a personal way, we open ourselves to ignoring and abusing(虐待) creatures whose ability of suffering is no less than our own. "We form beautiful relationships with them, and we place animals on a moral plane alongside ourselves and far above that of the stone or the cap, the things we call ‘it'." she says.
After graduating from Ontario College of Teachers, I became a teacher at a one-room country school in Aldborough Township.
That first day of school as a 19-year-old female teacher was a frightening experience. It was one thing to have graduated as a successful student; it was another thing to face a classroom of little faces that were waiting for the "new teacher." I had a classroom of 21 children of different shapes and sizes. The youngest was five going on six and the eldest was 16.
There were two doors for entrance in my school, one for the girls, one for the boys and just inside each door was a chemical toilet—no outdoor facilities for us! The heat in the building was a wood-burning furnace(火炉) down in the basement. Tending the furnace was one of my responsibilities. Luckily, I knew a bit about starting a fire, so the school didn't burn down.
What I found most difficult was that a parent might take a child out of school for any reason. I had one Dutch family, whose father would keep the children out of school to help with the farm work. Finally, I got tired of this and sent an education officer to solve the problem. Needless to say, I was very unpopular with that father from then on, but the children came to school much more regularly!
In the classroom, the older students helped the younger ones with learning, as well as with putting on coats and hats. If someone's lunch was forgotten, everyone shared a bit of their food. We were a family. We had good times and bad times, but we kept learning. Far beyond maths, social studies, reading, grammar and writing, we learned how to get along with each other.
I loved teaching at this small school and knew I was teaching the children about life as much as about subjects. I'd like to believe some students will have an influence on the world that will last long after I am gone.
Commonly, to better remember what is taught in class, students often take notes in class just by writing something important down in their books or marking some significant parts. However, visual methods of processing materials are more effective to remember the important information of a text.
Note-taking practices like mind-mapping lead students to organize their thoughts visually, helping them understand and remember the contents.
Rethink your paper. Encourage students to play with spacing, vary text sizes, and add symbols(符号) anywhere on the page.
Start with a little practice. So try to encourage them to start off just scribbling(草草地写).
Develop a symbolic language. Educator Wendi Pillars has students recognize 10 key words or concepts from the current learning materials. He begins developing a visual collection of shorthand(速记). Eventually, Students will develop their own vocabularies and visual note-taking styles.
Keep it low-vividness(逼真度). Communicate to your students that there's no need to use visual note-taking techniques. But students can find a way to comb the relationships between topics and concepts.
Diagrams, freehand drawing, mind-mapping, and similar techniques are ways to get students' thoughts down on paper. Attaching a grade to visual note-taking might prevent the student as they struggle to understand the difficult material, so provide reflection rather than a grade.
If you want to make your note-making effective, you can try these visual methods of processing materials.
A. Skip the grading. B. Remark on the paper. C. Everybody can refer to it when taking notes. D. They can't use their own ways to draw mind maps. E. Here are some ways to introduce visual note-taking. F. The process isn't about ensuring that drawings look good. G. Not all students will welcome the visual methods at first. |
When I was informed to report the 2022 Beijing Winter Paralympic Games(冬季残奥会), I really felt1. Having a very close friend with paralysis and seeing the challenges he faces each day, I am2by his perseverance(毅力). His spirit 3me. I knew attending the Paralympics would also move me. And it did, which I'll4later.
A month before entering the closed Games, we were required to complete hotel quarantine(隔离)5returning to the public. With so many people6into Beijing from other countries, there had been positive(阳性) COVID-197. Three days after the Paralympics began, a positive case was found in my hotel.8, there must be 7 days' or 14 days' quarantine.
9I wasn't pleased with the idea, it didn't10my excitement to attend the Winter Paralympics. I thought, the11thing to do is to start preparing immediately. Being limited to a small space for the time can have12effects on one's mental health. I began to think of what makes me feel comfortable in my home. I began to make a13of things: delicious food, sweet soaps, my bedding….
People might dislike the14of quarantining outside their homes. But if you can prepare yourself with the things you know, it will make you most15. If you think you have more than many others, you'll find it's not as bad as it might seem.

Mrs. Oreille was a very economical woman to the point that even her husband was hardly allowed any pocket money. Although they lived a rich and comfortable life, it really pained Mrs. Oreille to see any money spent. Whenever she had to spend anything, no matter how necessary it might be, she slept badly the next night. Her husband, Mr. Oreille, was continually saying to his wife, "You really need to be more generous. You see, we never get to enjoy our income." "It is better to have too much than too little." She used to reply to that. She was a little woman of about forty, very active, very neat and tidy, and with a very bad temper(脾气).
Mr. Oreille frequently complained about his wife. For two years, he had always come to his office with the same old patched umbrella, which amused his colleagues a lot. At last he got so tired of their jokes that he insisted on his wife buying him a new one, a good silk one, for twenty francs. He also asked her to bring him the bill, so that he could see that its quality was all right. She bought him one for eighteen francs, and said, getting red with anger as she gave it to her husband, "This will last you for five years at least." Mr. Oreille felt quite achievable, and received a small applause at the office with his new umbrella. His colleagues even very much envied him!
When he went home in the evening, his wife said to him, "You must take care of your umbrella well, for I shall never buy you a new one again." She took it to put it away safe, but suddenly was shocked with anger.
