Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. But for those who are interested in adventure and sport, there is a lot to do. Vanuatu's islands offer visitors two of the most exciting and dangerous activities in the world: volcano(火山)surfing and land diving.
Volcano Surfing
On Tanna Island, Mount Yasur rises 300 meters into the sky. Yasur is an active volcano, and it erupts (喷发)almost every day, sometimes several times a day. For centuries, people have climbed this mountain to visit the top. Recently, people have also started climbing Yasur to surf the volcano. In some ways, volcano surfing is like surfing in the sea, but in other ways it is very different.
Land Diving
Most people are familiar with bungee jumping (蹦极), but do you know bungee jumping started on Pentecost lsland in Vanuatu and is almost fifteen centuries old? 'The activity, first called land diving, is part of a religious ceremony (仪式). A man ties tree vines(树藤) to his legs. He then jumps head-first from a high tower to touch the earth with the top of his head—without breaking the vine. Every spring, island natives (men only) still take part in this amazing activity.
Maybe you have one neighbor who just looks out of the window, looking angry at everyone and everything that crosses the path. And though you think you know what is going on in his head, sometimes you could be wrong.
I have such a neighbor. First you see this bad-tempered old man looking out of his window, taking in everything that is happening on his block. To be exact, he looks angry over just everything, so most neighbors think he is rude. But his heart is gold. When he saw one woman neighbor shouting angrily at her son after he broke her coffee maker, this ill-tempered old man went and bought her a new one. But he didn't want the mother to know so. Instead, he made it look like he was just throwing it away. And that one secret good deed was just the tip of the iceberg(冰山). When he saw another neighbor with a eying baby because of the heat, he got a fan, took it to the neighbor's room and made it look like it had been sitting there all the time. He thought he was being strange and no one would know all the kindness he had shared. But a little girl next door knew this ill-tempered neighbor's secrets. She carefully drew a picture of the old man dressed as Father Christmas and put it on the wall.
So when Christmas came, this little girl had a surprise for the block's secret Father Christmas. This valuable poster is such an important reminder(提示) that the holiday season is about giving out of love, even if no one else knows. How sweet it is!
The Leshan Giant Buddha is a statue of Maitreya (弥勒大佛) in sitting posture. The Buddha is located in Sichuan Province, facing Min River, Qingyi River, and Dadu River. In December, 1996, the Buddha was included by UNESCO on the list of the World Heritage (世界遗产录).
The statue was begun in the year 713 in the Tang Dynasty, and finished in the year 803. The Buddha is 7l meters high. The eight-meter-long instep(脚背) is big enough for one hundred people to sit on and the 28-meter-wideshoulder is large enough to be a basketball playground.
A monk called Hai 'Tong is connected with the Buddha forever. At that time, wild waters brought out many boat accidents and people just put the disaster down to the presence of a water spirit(水神). So Hai 'Tong decided to make a statue beside the river thinking that the Buddha would bring the water spirit under control. After 20 years' begging from door to door, he finally collected enough money for the plan. When some local government officials tried to get this amount of money, Hai' Tong said that they could get his eyeball but not the money raised for the Buddha. After he dugout his eyeball, these officials ran away scared. 'The project was half done when Hai 'Tong passed away, and two of his disciples (门徒)continued the work. After a total of 90 years' hard work, the project was finally completed.
Having such a long history, the Buddha was nearly destroyed by the wind and rain. The Chinese government began the repairing work in 1963 under the instruction of experts from UNESCO.
Located in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives (马尔代夫)are among the most beautiful islands in the world, with sandy white beaches, clear water, and amazing coral reefs (珊瑚礁). The country depends on tourism, fishing, and shipping. But the rising sea level and the carbon pollution causing warming oceans are threatening (威胁) their existence.
The Maldives have asked for international help. They are a tiny country. The World Bank, the United States, the European Union, and many other groups have offered money to develop safeguards against climate change.
To protect the islands, the Maldives have built sea walls and increased the elevation(海拔) of important buildings and services such as the two international airports, which lie just 165 feet from the coastline.
They're also building up islands such as the Hulhumale. The new island is surrounded by nine-foot sea walls. More than 40, 000 people live there. The plan is to house 240, 00, providing new opportunities for jobs. The goal is an excellent planned community with sustainable housing and buildings sensitive to the environment and needs of the people.
'The government will move people living on smaller, lower-lying islands to the new built-up islands. The new islands offer free houses, new schools, health hospitals, fresh water, and waste treatment. Depending on tourism, the country hopes to build 50 more tourist islands.
"Climate change is happening, but we are not leaving the Maldives to the sea, "said Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim. The Maldives will protect their islands, people and tourism with new islands and ongoing island development against rising sea level.
