Not many years ago, a wealthy and rather strange old man named Johnson lived alone in a village in the south of England. He had made a lot of money in trading with foreign countries. When he was seventy – five, he gave $ 60,000 to the village school to buy land and equipment for a children's ground.
As a result of his kindness, he became famous. Many people came to visit him. Among them was a newspaperman. During their talk, Johnson remarked that he was seventy-five and expected to live to be hundred. The newspaperman asked him how he managed to be healthy at seventy-five. Johnson had a sense of humor. He liked whisky and drank some each day. "I have an injection (注射) in my neck each evening," he told the newspaperman, thinking of his evening glass of whisky.
The newspaperman did not understand what Johnson meant. In his newspaper he reported that Johnson was seventy-five and had daily injection in his neck. Within a week Johnson received thousands of letters from all over Britain, asking him for the secret of his daily injection.
Not too long ago, our teacher, being a " tree-hugger"(as the kids call her), had us write an essay on an environmental issue. I was eager to start, but something made me stop.
"What is an environmental issue?" one kid asked. "What if we don't care about the environment?" another complained. "It's not like it affects me."
These comments astounded(使震惊) me. I have always cared about the environment and assumed that others did too. From the surprised look on my teacher's face, I could tell she felt the same way.
In no time, I finished my essay. In my essay I wrote about logging(伐木), which is an important industry, but if we continue to cut down trees without replacing, it will damage the environment.
There are so many things that we can do to save our world. Recycling, of course, is always a good thing, but not everyone has a recycling plant nearby (I don't). There are other ways to help the environment. Plant a tree. Don't waste water.
I can't stand it when a person's excuse for not caring is "Nothing is going to happen in my lifetime, so why should I care?" Sure, the chances of something terrible happening are slim, but I want people to realize that if we don't deal with it, someone will have to eventually. Do you want that to be your children? Or your children's children?
When my teacher told me to read my essay to my class, I was a little embarrassed because I didn't want everyone to call me "tree-hugger". I realize now that if being a tree-hugger means you care about the environment, I'm a tree-hugger 100 percent. I just wish more people were.
Down-to-earth means being honest, open, and easy to deal with. It is a pleasure to find someone who is down-to-earth. A person who is down-to-earth is easy to talk to. He or she accepts others as equals. A down-to-earth person may be an important member of society, of course, but they do not let their importance go to their heads, and they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. Someone who is filled with self-importance and pride, often without cause, is said to have his nose in the air. There is no way a person with his nose in the air can be down-to-earth.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some way to down-to-earth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality. He has what is called common sense. He may have dreams but he does not allow them to block his knowledge of what is real. The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. A man with his head in the clouds is a dreamer whose mind is not in the world. Sometimes such a dreamer can be brought back to reality; sharp words from the teacher, for example, can usually get a daydreaming student to put both feet back on the ground.
The person who is down-to-earth usually has both feet on the ground._________8_________Someone with both feet on the ground may not be as open and easy to deal with as someone who is down-to-earth. When we have both our feet firmly on the ground, we are realistic and we act honestly and openly toward others, and our lives are like the ground below us, solid and strong.
Good relationships are definitely good sources of happiness in life. We all want happy relationships but if we do not keep that relationship alive, it can also be one of the most distraught things in life. There may be no hard and fast rules in making good relationships, as each of us has different preferences and points of view as to what is a great relationship. The following are some major key points in making relationships work.
It is often said that building good relationships is all about communication. Good communication indeed governs a good relationship — knowing the right thing to say, when to say it, how to say it, and accepting that some things are better left unsaid. I personally think communication must be broadened because relationships involve more decisions to make. From study to work, from money to entertainment and even in things about yourself or about your friend that you do not know, communication is essential in these aspects of the relationships.
Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him all the time. You and your friend come from different family backgrounds, raised in different environments so there may be disagreements here and there. However, it is important in making relationships work to express disagreements without pushing the relationship to end. Again, good communication and learning to compromise (妥协) at times are necessary.
As the relationship lasts longer, you may also discover things about you and your friend that you may not have known before. Therefore, supporting each other on both your "hidden selves" can also make a good relationship.
Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me, I always believe that love needs open communication, respect, support and understanding each other in making relationships work.
a. communication b. support c. love d. hidden selves
Too many of us are waiting too long to live our best lives. We keep putting everything off until tomorrow. Then, before we know it, we find ourselves asking, "How did it get so late so soon?"
So we'd better make today the beginning of our new life. Take time to realize what we want and need. Take time to love, laugh, cry, and learn. Here are five things we should start doing today:
Accept ourselves. The secret to happiness and success is the acceptance of ourselves. We will never become who we want to be if we rely on everyone else to qualify us.So always go with ourselves, never against ourselves. Be who we were created to be and we will set the world on fire.
Make ourselves a priority. To tell the truth, there are only a few people in this world who will stay 100% true to us, so we should stay true to ourselves. Put our own needs into the list of things to do.
Don't sit back and let things happen to us. Go out and make things happen. We are what we do, not what we say we'll do. Stop saying "I wish" and start saying "I will". Turn our dreams into plans.
Do the work. We can't underestimate(低估) a person who always works hard. Be that person.Always remember that the task ahead of us is never greater than the strength within us. Do what's right, not what's easy. Our dreams are worth it.
We can't force things to happen; we can only drive ourselves trying crazily. There's a time and place for everything. So don't force what's not yet supposed to fit into our life. When it's meant to be, it will be. Work hard, and be patient.
A. Take positive action.
B. Enjoy every moment of life.
C. Life is shorter than it often seems.
D. Everyone has a different way of life.
E. Accept ourselves just the way we are.
F. Allow life to happen like it's supposed to.
G. In life, we don't get what we wish for; we get what we work for.
Although I love my life, it hasn't been a lot of fun as I've been ill for 28 years.
Music has always been a great love of mine and, in my 20s, when my 1 was more manageable, I 2 ten years as a professional singer in restaurants, playing and singing folk songs. 3 that was years ago and times have changed. 4 I live with my mother on a country farm.
Two years ago, I decided that I would need to have some kind of extra work to 5 my disability pension (残疾抚恤金). 6 I needed to sleep in afternoons, I was limited in my 7. I decided that I would consider 8 to singing in restaurants.
My family are all musicians, so I was 9 when I went into our local music store. I explained that I wanted to sing again but using recorded karaoke music. I knew that discs were very expensive and I really didn't have a lot of 10 to get started. And 11 you find only three to four songs out of ten on a disc that you can 12 use.
When I told the owner of the shop about my 13, he gave me a long, thoughtful 14. "This means a lot to you, doesn't it?" he said. "Come with me."
He led me 15 the crowded shop and to a bench with a large professional karaoke box on it. He placed his large hand 16 on his treasure and said, "I have 800 karaoke songs in here. You can take your 17 and I'll record them for you. That should get you started. "
I 18. Thanking him, I made a time with him to listen to all the songs and choose 19 that I could sing. I have come full circle with his help.
His 20 still warms my heart and makes me do just that bit extra, when I have the chance.

Blood was running down his leg. A lot of people stood by watching, but everybody gave her a hand. I hurriedly stopped a passed car, and the driver and I carried the injury woman into the car.
