I had been living in a whirl: studying the organ at the University of Arizona, conducting a speech clinic in town, and teaching a class in musical appreciation at the Desert Willow Ranch, where I was staying. I was going to parties, dances, horseback rides under the stars. One morning I collapsed. My heart! “You will have to lie in bed for a year of complete rest,” the doctor said. He didn't encourage me to believe I would ever be strong again.

In bed for a year! To be invalid—perhaps to die! I was terror-stricken! Why did all this have to happen to me? What had I done to deserve it? I swept. I was bitter. But I did go to bed as the doctor advised. A neighbor of mine, Mr. Rudolf, an artist, said to me: “You think now that spending a year in bed will be a tragedy. But it won't be. You will have time to think and get acquainted with yourself. You will make more spiritual growth in these next few months than you have made during all your previous life.”

I became calmer, and tried to develop a new sense of values. I read books of inspiration. One day I heard a radio commentator say: “You can express only what is in your own consciousness.” I had heard the words like these many times before, but now they reached down inside me and took root. I determined to think only the thoughts I wanted to live by: thoughts of joy, happiness, health. I forced myself each morning, as soon as I awoke, to go over all the things I had to be grateful for. No pain. A lovely young daughter. My eyesight. My hearing. Lovely music on the radio. Time to read. Good food. Good friends. I was so cheerful and had so many visitors that the doctor put up a sign saying that only one visitor at a time would be allowed in my cabin—and only at certain hours.

Nine years have passed since then, and I now lead a full, active life. I am deeply grateful now for that year I spent in bed. It was the most valuable and the happiest year I spent in Arizona. The habit I formed then of counting my blessings each morning still remains with me. It is one of my most precious possessions.

    1. (1) The writer had to lie in bed for a year because _____.
A . she was terror-stricken at that time B . she had a serious heart-attack C . she was worn out because of hard work D . the doctor wanted her to do so
    2. (2) When told to lie in bed to take a year's rest, the writer_______.
A . was very grateful to the doctor B . became very worried C . turned to a neighbor Mr. Rudolf for help D . thought of her bitter experiences in the past
    3. (3) The reason why the writer said “I am deeply grateful now for that year I spent in bed” lies in that ______.
A . she led a very comfortable life that year B . she became used to lying in bed C . she perfectly recovered from her illness D . she came to know how to lead an active life
    4. (4) The writer told us of her story mainly to ______.
A . tell us that we should be grateful for what we have had B . introduce herself to us because she was wise and kind C . explain that lying in bed for a long time is not a terrible thing D . encourage us to achieve as much as we can

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida's busiest airport is becoming the first in the nation to require a face scan of passengers on all arriving and departing international flights, including US citizens, according to officials there. The expected announcement Thursday at Orlando International Airport alarms some privacy supporters. They say there are no formal rules in place for handling data collected from the scans, nor formal guidelines on what should happen if a passenger is wrongly prevented from boarding.

Airports in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, New York and Washington D.C. already use face scans for some departing international flights, but they don't involve all international travelers at the airports like the program's expansion in Orlando would. The image(图像) from the face scan is compared to a Department of Homeland Security database that has images of people who should be on the flight, in order to check the traveler's identity.

US citizens at these airports can refuse to be scanned, but the agency “doesn't seem to be doing an adequate job letting Americans know they can,” said Harrison Rudolph, an expert at the Center on Privacy & Technology at the Georgetown University Law Center.

US citizens at the Orlando airport will be able to refuse face scans just like at the other airports if they don't want to provide their photograph, Jennifer Gabris, a spokeswoman for the US Customs and Border Protection said in an email. However, a notice about a possible rule change for the program states that “US citizens may be required to provide photographs upon entering or departing the United States.”

“We're not talking about one gate,” Rudolph said. “We're talking about every international departure gate, which is a huge expansion of the number of people who will be scanned. Errors tend to go up as uses go up.”

Two US senators(参议员) last month sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security, urging that formal rules be carried out before the program is expanded. “It will also ensure a full test of this potentially sweeping program that could influence every American leaving the country by airport,” said the letter from the senators.

    1. (1) What makes Orlando International Airport different from others in the US?
A . It is the busiest airport in the United States. B . It allows US citizens to decide on choosing face scans or not. C . It demands face scans of all international travelers, including Americans. D . It is the first airport in United States to use face scans for international flights.
    2. (2) According to the passage, we can learn that Rudolph ______.
A . is worried about the accuracy of face scans B . urges every international airport should use face scans C . thinks US airports shouldn't allow citizens to refuse face scans  D . believes face scans at the airports can help check travelers' identity
    3. (3) What's the main idea of this passage?
A . US airports are using face scans for all international flights. B . Formal rules should be carried out for using face scans at US airports. C . US airports haven't informed the citizens of their right to refuse face scans. D . Face scans of all international passengers at US airports have caused public concern.

The vast majority of green sea turtles in the northern Great Barrier Reef are female because of warmer temperatures due to climate change, which influences their sex, researchers said. Scientists are concerned populations of these animals could turn almost completely female.

A recent study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, California State University and Worldwide Fund for Nature Australia examined two genetically distinct populations of green sea turtles living in the Great Barrier Reef. The study found that a group of about 200,000 turtles living in the northern part of the reef was almost entirely female. While the southern population was 65 to 69 percent female, females in the northern group accounted for 99.1 percent of young turtles and 86.8 percent of adults.

After combining their results with temperature data, the scientists found that most sea turtle populations are living above the most suitable temperature. The northern green turtles have been producing mainly females for more than two decades and that the complete feminization of this population is possible in the near future, making it clear that climate change is threatening the survival of these populations.

Dermot O'Gorman, the chief executive of World Wildlife Fund Australia, said, “That's a very visible sign of the impact of climate change. But this is a quiet change.”

O'Gorman said more urgent action on climate change is clearly needed, adding that some conservationists have already taken practical measures, such as using shade cloth on turtle nesting beaches to lower the sand temperature, and reducing by catch in the fishing industry.

“Shade cloth can be used in certain places, but there's a limit to the scale you can do that,” he said, “Now every large male who can reproduce is going to be even more important.”

    1. (1) What did the study find about green sea turtles?
A . About 65 to 69 percent of northern turtles are female. B . 86.8 percent of southern turtles have grown up to adults. C . Almost all the northern green turtles are born females. D . Adult green sea turtles can change their sex in warmer places
    2. (2) What does the underlined word “feminization” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
      A . Becoming extinct. B . Becoming female. C . Becoming weaker. D . Becoming larger.
    3. (3) How are conservationists protecting green sea turtles?
A . By keeping their nests cool. B . By stopping fishing them. C . By expanding the size of their nests. D . By providing them with clothing.

  • 18. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice's birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.

This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he'd seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.

How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he placed a tin can and a piece of string in a large bag. Then he tied the bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.

After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately. The smaller trees had already been picked over pretty well, but he was able to find a half-dozen mangoes before noon.

When the sun was high overhead, the hard work began. Nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. The other boys took their fruit and went away. Tony used his pocket knife to cut a long piece of bamboo. Then he took the tin can from the bag, tied it to one end of the bamboo stick, and walked over to the base of mango tree.

He stayed there, holding the tin can high up into the tree. His efforts were occasionally rewarded when a mango dropped into the can. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.

    注意:
