It's March 12th. Lili and Linlin are digging on a hill not far from their school. In China, people across the country plant trees1on this day.
The idea of planting trees was first put forward in 1911 by Sun Zhongshan, the great2in China's history. He said more trees were needed as a3against flood and drought. In 1915, April 5th was named as Tree Planting Day. Then, in 1979, the day4to March 12th, to5the date on which Sun Zhongshan died.
"Everyone has heard of the Great Wall of China," says Lili. "But have you heard of the Green Wall of China? That's the biggest tree planting6of all." The Gobi Desert in the north of China was7every year. So in 1978, a tree planting project was started to8Gobi spreading. The government and local farmers have been planting millions of trees to build a great green "wall" along the edge of the desert.
"Tree planting has become a tradition in China now," says Linlin. "Many people do it on March 12th. Many people also plant a tree on a9day. My parents planted a tree when I started school. And my cousin planted10on his wedding day. We do it for the environment and for ourselves."
There was a young man who was in trouble. He went bankrupt (破产) and his wife went away from him. From then on, failure was all that he had seen. Struggling with this, he went into the forest alone. There, he met an old man who had lived there for a long time. He shared his story with the old man and asked "Can you give me one good reason not to give up?"
"Look," the old man said, "Do you see that fern (蕨类植物) and bamboo there?" "Yes," the man answered.
"When I planted the fern and bamboo seeds, I watered them carefully. A few days later, the fern quickly grew from the land," the old man went on.
"However, I watered the bamboo seeds for years, it still didn't sprout. But I didn't give up and continued looking after it. In the fifth year, a small sprout came out of the land. After a few months, the tree grew very, very tall."
"The little bamboo tree had been growing underground in the past four years, developing a root strong enough for its ground growth in the fifth year. If it hadn't done this, it would not be so strong. So you know, all the time you were struggling, you were actually growing strong roots," the old man said. Finally, the man thanked the old man deeply. Then he left the forest with the hope for life.
Duan Jiayang, a 13-year-old student of a middle school in Shenzhen, learns the skills required to take care of vegetable fields.
"I learned how to place the mulch film (地膜)," he says, "It's not easy."
In China, many parents place a heavy focus on their children's good results, but vocational (职业的) skills have little been cared.
"Some parents do everything for their children," says Yan Mei, an official with the middle school, adding that many students are short of the basic skills needed in their daily lives.
Since March last year, the governments have launched a lot of policies, requiring that colleges, middle schools and primary schools pay more attention to teaching students practical skills.
Following these policies, the middle school launched an "agricultural (农业的) class base" on one of its school yards. Students plant fruit and vegetables on an area of land about 4,000 m2 in size.
In the days coming up to the May Day holiday, students of different grades at the school worked together in the fields, says a head teacher of a middle school. They planted watermelons, carrots and corn. May Day, also known as Labor Day, is celebrated on May 1st in China.
The school hopes that students will understand the food is quite precious so that they will better realize the difficulties that their parents went through.
After work, you go back home, open an app, place your order, and wait for your food to be delivered to your home. This is how many young people eat in China these days. According to the latest report from the China Internet Network Information Center, 421 million Chinese people use online food delivery services. That's equal to half of the total number of Internet users in China.
Which group of people is ordering food online the most? For sure, it is mainly young people. A recent report that was published by the China Hospitality Association and Meituan, a food delivery service, showed that 86.3 percent of the service's users are between 20 and 34 years old. These people, are the main force driving the development of the food delivery industry.
Small families rely largely on food delivery services. According to the National Bureau Statistics, Chinese families have changed in size over the past ten years. In 2002, only 7.7 percent of families have only one person. But this number increased to 15.6 percent in 2017. The percentage of two-person families rose from 18.4 in 2002 to 27.2 in 2017. For small families, cooking always takes a lot of time and energy, so ordering food online has become more popular.
The improvement of China's food delivery services has also made more customers interested. According to Meituan's report, the average( 平 均 的 ) time it takes to make a food delivery dropped from 38 minutes in 2016 to 29 minutes in 2020. Many delivery platforms are also offering more services, delivering products such as fruit, vegetables, medicine and even flowers. As their services continue to improve, it's certain that the food delivery industry will keep growing in the future.
