Do you know how many people there were in the world 200 years ago? Just one billion. But only 100 years later, the population was increased by 100percent. In 1971, about 3. 5 billion people lived on the earth. Forty years later, the number doubled(翻倍). On October 31st, 2011, the 7 billionth world citizen (公民), a baby girl was born in the Philippines(菲律宾). At this speed, it will shoot up to 8 billion by the year 2025.
Most new babies were born in developing countries. Most families have four or five children. In many developed countries, the population is increasing slowly. Most families have only one or two babies. In 1950, about 25 percent of the world's population lived in developed countries. By 2050, the number will reduce to 10 percent. In many developing countries, people are now short of food, water and medicine. What's worse, farmland is becoming less and less, and farmers are moving to cities to make a living. But cities couldn't satisfy their needs at all. Finally, many people can't find jobs, and they become poorer and poorer.
To solve these problems, many developing countries are taking measures to control the population.
When I was 17, l read such a quote(引文), "If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you'll most certainly be right. " It touched me a lot, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror(镜子) every morning and asked myself, "Would this be my last day? Would I want to do what l am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days, I know I need to do something and to change something.
About a year ago with the help of medical instrument(医疗器械), the doctors discovered that I had a terrible illness the worst I ever imagined. They told me that I could live no longer than three to six months. They advised me to go home and get things in order, which was a warning for preparation to die. It meant trying to tell my kids everything in just a few months, and to tell my family what they'd do in the following years. It meant saying many goodbyes. l lived with that warning all day. But later the doctors told me that this illness might be cured(治愈)with the help of modern science and technology. I had an operation and m fine now.
Your time is limited(有限的), so don't waste it living someone else's life. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and feelings.
Light pollution is a problem in many cities around the world. You can see the glow(暗淡的光)of many cities in the night sky. This is sky glow. Some cities give off so much light that they can be seen from space!
Light can shine into people's homes and keep them awake at night. Too bright light can make drivers unable to see for a long time.
Too much light can make seeing stars harder. For example, people built an observatory(天文台) on Palomar Mountain in the 1990s because the area was dark. But over the years, the local people have built more and more buildings in southern California and the lights of the cities have caused sky glow in the night sky.
You can help stop light pollution and save energy by turning off lights when you aren't using them, using lower watt bulbs(较低瓦数的灯泡) if you don't need bright light.
A. Working under bright lights in the workplace all day long can make people ill. B. It comes from streetlights, building lights, lights on billboards (广告牌) and so on.
C. The Palomar Observatory is trying to work with the local government to keep the light down so they can continue their important work.
D. Too much light is not only a waste of energy, but also it can affect people.
E. Scientists and people who want to look at stars must go to an area with less lighting to get a better look.
It was a very foggy(雾茫茫的) morning in London. The fog was so thick that it was not1to see more than a foot or so. Buses, cars and taxis were stopped along the roadside, unable to move because the drivers couldn't2. People were trying to walk to their destinations(目的地), but most were losing their3 in the fog.
Mr. Smith had a very important meeting at the House of Commons, but he was not familiar (熟悉的) with the area and no one could take4there in such heavy fog. So he was a little 5. He was trying to find his way in the fog. Soon, however, he realized that he was lost. 6he bumped(撞) into a stranger(陌生人). Mr. Smith said sorry to the stranger and then asked him whether he7help him find his way. The stranger said it was a piece of cake and 8to take Mr. Smith to the meeting place. Mr. Smith9him and they started to walk. The fog was getting thicker and thicker every minute, 10the stranger had no difficulty in finding the way. They went along one street, turned down another, 11a square and at last, after about half an hour, they 12the meeting place.
Mr. Smith couldn't13how the stranger found his way. "It is wonderful, "he said. "But14do you find the way in the thick fog?"
"It is no trouble at all15me, " said the stranger. "I am blind. "
time horse month soon help however few ready enough hold |
I have been very busy since I became a volunteer for the Riding for the Disabled Association.
Every Saturday, I help to get the horses for the disabled(残疾的)riders. Many more disabled people want to ride than you'd imagine. It's a disadvantage that I don't know how to ride —I'd love to get on long rides with the riders -- but I'll learn it . Right now, I'm just happy to be able to lead the horses around for the disabled riders.
I'm also to organize a sale, which will be next month. It's a lot more work than helping the disabled. I need to collect second-hand things to sell at the sale. There are things available(获得的) than I thought, but I'm sure we'll have enough by next .
I hope the sale raises more money than last month's work. It was rainy, so too few people took part in the event. Last week, we held an auction(拍卖). The auction took much less to organize than the work. , for some reason, people offered too little money for the things, so we didn't raise money.
Noise is a kind of pollution. Cars and machines produce too much noise. It makes people feel uncomfortable. Making a loud noise in public also a sort of pollution. It not only disturbs others also hurts people's hearing. It can even make people go deaf have high blood pressure.
As students, we should help solve this environmental problem. First, we shouldn't speak a loud voice in public. Second, we should find a suitable time and place to enjoy music. We can also plant more trees.
If everyone makes a contribution the environment, we'll succeed in improving it.
A: Oh, dear! You look so dirty! ?
B: I met a sandstorm on my way home.
A: That's too bad. There have been several sandstorms this year.
B: Yeah. Sandstorms happen more and more frequently(频繁地).
A:
B: They were caused by the heavy loss of trees. People cut down too many trees.
Lots of land became deserts. The sand was blown away easily by the wind.
A:
B: Yes. The government has built "the Green Great Wall" in north China. It helps a lot, but it's not enough.
A: I think we should keep planting more trees.
B: It's a good way to protect our environment. By the way, our school is holding an activity to plant trees on Sunday. Would you like to come?
A: Sure. ?
B: Let's meet at 8: 00 at the school gate.
