"Where is the university?" This is a question that many visitors to Cambridge(剑桥)ask. But no one can give them a 1 answer, for there is no wall to be found 2 the university. The university is the city. You can find classroom buildings, 3, museums and offices of the university all over the city. And most of its members are the students and 4 of the thirty-one colleges(学院).
Cambridge was already a 5 town long before the first students and teachers arrived 800 years ago. It grew up by the river Granta, and the river was once 6 the Cam. A 7 was built over the river as early as 875, so the town got its name "Cambridge".
In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries more and more land was used for college buildings. The town grew much 8 in the nineteenth century after the opening of the railway in 1845.Cambridge became a 9in 1951 and now it has a population of over 100,000. Many young students in other countries 10to study at Cambridge.
At the crossing, we usually find the traffic lights in cities. The traffic lights are the same in every country. There are always three lights: red, yellow and green. Red means "stop". Yellow means "Wait", and green means "Go". When the light is red and you still go, the policeman will fine you. In China, drive on the right side(侧)of the road. In the USA, drivers drive on the right side, too. But in England and Australia, drivers drive on the left side of the road. If you go by car, by bike or on foot, you must know about the traffic rules(交通规则).
When Mr. David retired(退休),he bought a small house in a village near the sea. He liked it and hoped to live a quiet life in it.
But to his great surprise,many tourists(游客)came to see his house in summer holidays,for it was the most interesting building in the village. From morning to night there were tourists outside the house. They kept looking into the rooms through the windows and many of them even went into Mr. David's garden. This Was too much for Mr. David. He decided to drive the visitors away. So he put a notice on the window. The notice said,"If you want to satisfy your curiosity(好奇心),come in and look round. Price(价格):twenty dollars."Mr. David was sure that the visitors would stop coming,but he was wrong. More and more visitors came and Mr. David had to spend every day showing them around his house."I came here to retire,not to work as a guide(导游)."he said angrily. In the end, he sold the house and moved away.
