Ten-year-old Orion Jean has always known that kindness is important. He often practiced it by volunteering with his family. , after entering the National Kindness Speech Contest, he became more active in it. Orion says, "If someone is treated (kind) it can make their day brighter and encourage that person to be kind to somebody else. And then it just (grow) and makes the world a better place. "
All around the world, families celebrate special days together. Traditions for these days (be) very different. Some of them may surprise you.
Families in most countries have a special day to celebrate mothers. In Serbia, this day is on second Sunday before Christmas. On that day, children sneak（溜）into their (mother) bedroom and tie her feet with ribbon（丝带）so that she can't get out of bed. Then they shout, "Mother's Day, Mother's Day! What will you pay (get) away?" Then the mother gives (they) small treats and presents as payment so that the kids "free" her.
In China, they say that (baby)are one year old when they are born. After that, all children celebrate their birthday on New Year's Day because that's when they grow a year (old). Actual birthdays are (usual) celebrated with a big family meal. The tradition is that the "birthday boy" or "birthday girl" should fill their mouth with as many long noodles they can and then eat them. This is because in Chinese culture, long noodles are a symbol long life.
Susan was tired of having her three children talk back to her. One day, she climbed into her kids' tree house. It was good place, she thought, for a mother to go on strike（罢工）. She was tired of (drive) them everywhere without thanks and doing more than her share of the work around the house. Until (thing) changed, Susan decided to stay up in the tree.

In the evenings, the group of people often sit around a fire and tell stories.
The Kalahari is a big area of bushland in the southern Africa. It (have)two parts. There is less rain in the southern part than in the northern part, the south is drier. There are fewer plants and animals there, and it's more difficult for people (live). But when it rains at the end of the summer, the land becomes greener and more beautiful. For a few weeks, there are (million) of little flowers and even butterflies!
A bookstore in Kaohsiung got international attention after CNN reported on the unusual decoration (装饰) in it. The store, Wuguan Books, is known as "experimental bookstore" because of the dark lighting used to show the books on sale. Wuguan Books (lie) at Pier-2 Culture Center, which is full special cafés and exhibits. The bookstore is almost(complete) dark, except for the shelves (书架) of books. There are over 400 shelves of books in the store, with many (light)placed around books. It appears as if books themselves are lighting up the darkness.

The top Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, famous for his "Super Rice", died of illness at the age of 91 May 22nd, 2021.
Yuan Longping (be) born in Beijing in 1930. For almost 60 years, he had given most of his time and energy to rice research. His achievements were so great he was called "The Father of Hybrid Rice" and won World Food Prize.

It's not easy being deaf, and although some kids are born deaf, many others lose their hearing later on. So it's important to know how (be) a good friend with anyone in the Deaf community. Here are some ways.
Be patient and do not give up on a friend hearing loss. If you repeat what you are saying (loud), and it isn't helping your Deaf friend, try to write it down or use signals instead.
Also, remember that deafness isn't the same as being stupid. Deaf kids are just as smart as anyone else. Don't treat your Deaf friends like they are not very smart. they can't hear you, there's nothing wrong with their brain.
Don't forget about texts, (email), and so on. These are much (good) ways to keep in touch with your Deaf friend than phone calls. If the two of you can sign, a video call is great!

In the past, my old grandmother didn't enjoy talking on the phone. Actually, she hated it so she was always refusing (use) it. She told us that she preferred speaking to people in person.
