The annual World Economic Forum (经济论坛) took place in Davos, Switzerland, in Jan. 23-26, 2018. What did Chinese entrepreneurs (企业家) speak in the forum? Are there some quotable quotes for you?

Jack Ma, founder and executive chairman of Alibaba Group

"I think globalization cannot be stopped — no one can stop globalization, no one can stop trade. If trade stops, the world stops. Trade is the way to dissolve (溶解,结束) the war not cause the war," said Ma in Davos, "Google, Facebook, Amazon and Alibaba — we are the luckiest companies of this century. But we have the responsibility to have a good heart, and do something good."

★Richard Liu, founder and chief executive officer of JD

"Business is not only a way to make money but also a way to contribute yourself, to help people," Liu said in a speech in Davos. "How can we face the fractured (分化的)world? That's the topics of the Davos this year. I think a very important thing in business is cooperation. If we can unite, work together, if we work very closely, I think we can bring more hope to the people and we can build more trust between the people, countries and companies and partners," he said.

        Jane Sun, CEO of Ctrip

"Tourism is a sunrise industry. Since I entered Ctrip, every year there are new comers, which, first of all, shows that tourism is booming." Sun told Sina.com in Davos. "We invested heavily in ABC. A refers to AI, B is big data, and C is cloud computing. As we continue to expand overseas, these three will be very good weapons for us. So we think those mean opportunity," she said.

    ★Hu Xiaoming, president of Aliyun

"In 2018, people will see the development in various countries more closely connected with cloud computing. More manufacturing enterprises and financial institutions will start to use „cloud', and cloud computing will increase the efficiency of technology and finance," Hu told Xinhua in Davos.

I was selfish as a teenager. I usually spent my time thinking about myself and taking care of my own needs. I let my older brother do most of the work around the house until he left for college. I let my mom and dad worry about our bills and problems while I read books, played, and lost myself in my own imagination. This didn't change even when I went to college either. I studied hard but only to make my own life better. Even when I started to explore my faith, it was only to increase my own happiness.

I married after graduation and decided to start a family. Of course, I had no idea what hard knocks reality had in store for my selfish soul. Soon I found myself unemployed, deeply in debt, and with a new baby on the way. I found out that life has little sympathy for spoiled people. In fact, all of the struggles I was going through were beating the selfishness slowly out of me.

Still, I didn't give up on happiness. I knew that there must be a way to find it. I finally realized, however, that it had to include more than just my own needs, wants, and desires. The answer began to make itself clear one night shortly after my baby boy was born. I got a bottle and held him in my arms. As I was feeding him I looked down and saw his big, innocent, trusting eyes. I smiled and talked to him. Then he smiled and I could feel my heart growing, expanding with love. I felt such peace and joy. At that moment I had a hint of the truth: it is by growing our hearts with love that we find our happiness.

Carolyn Arends wrote:" The more people you let into your heart, the bigger your heart gets. The more love you get, the more love you have to give. It just keeps growing." So, keep loving, keep living and keep caring. Keep growing your heart today, tomorrow, and always.

A . Spoiled people can't survive the hardship of life. B . Spoiled people are never happy in life. C . Life is cruel to spoiled people. D . Selfishness is helpful.
    3. (3) What can be inferred from the passage?
A . The author loved kids. B . The author often fed his baby. C . The author realized the importance of happiness. D . When caring for his baby, the author got inspired.

You have just won ten million yuan in a lottery (彩票) - how would you spend it? Before you know it, ten minutes had gone on daydreaming. There is a time and a place for daydreaming, but we don't have much control over that. Isn't it worrying that an estimated 30 to 50 percent of our waking time is spent daydreaming? What if your dentist is having that lottery daydream while removing your rotten tooth?

Some studies suggest daydreaming makes us unhappy because we are not focusing on what is around us but are instead thinking about the past or future. However, a recent study published in the journal Neuropsychologica finds that mind-wandering can be of benefit to us. The researchers measured the brain patterns of more than 100 people using an MRI (核磁共振成像) scanner. This data was compared with tests on creative ability and a questionnaire on how much their minds usually wandered. Those whose minds wandered the most scored higher in creative ability tests and had more efficient brain systems measured in the MRI machine.

Being efficient at mind-wandering means you can zone out and then naturally switch back in without missing any important point or step. Christine Godwin, the lead author of the latest study from the Georgia Institute of Technology, says that if you are focusing on difficult tasks, your performance will drop if your mind wanders. “But when tasks are easy, people who have high cognitive ability can let their minds wander because it does not affect their performance. You may be thinking about upcoming goals or problem-solving. These are some of the positive sides to mind-wandering."

Mind-wandering can vary between being more practical or more emotional. What mind-wandering seems to be best at, researchers say, is coming up with new solutions to old problems. So, it's not always a waste of time!

    1. (1) The first paragraph serves as a(n)______ .
      A . explanation B . introduction C . comment D . background
    2. (2) The study published in Neuropsychologica shows that ______.
A . daydreaming makes us unhappy B . we are focusing on the past or future C . mind-wandering is related to creative ability D . MRI scanner is helpful in measuring the brain patterns
    3. (3) What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 3 mean?
      A . get distracted. B . focus on. C . be affected D . have control.
    4. (4) What is the main idea of the passage?
A . Mind-wandering might be dangerous. B . Daydreaming might bring benefits. C . Mind-wandering is not a waste of time. D . Daydreaming is hard to be controlled.

Time is something that we all are taking for granted these days. We spend hours watching TV or playing mobile games, thinking that this is just normal. I find this a waste of time. Every second is valuable and we should rethink of ways of spending our time.

Firstly, spend time in doing things that really matter. Spend time with your family and friends. Enjoy a nice hot meal and eat it slowly. Give yourself time to play and spend enough time in sleeping. But the truth is the little things matter most in life.

Secondly, you have to know what is done cannot be undone. Do not allow your mind to stay in the past. Every day is a new adventure. It may not be an opportunity like an immediate get-rich chance, but it may be an opportunity for new experiences.

If you have only one chance to do something for someone, why not do it to the best of your ability? It should not matter whether you are being rewarded or not. You will take pride in your work because you've done your best. Trust me, quality efforts will be rewarded in time.

Lastly, every moment you spend in doing things is the time taken from your life. Don't waste your time away working day and night just for money. The value of your time is measured by how you spend it and whom you choose to spend it with.

    A. You will get whatever you want from working.

    B. Spend more time on the important tasks instead of time-wasters.

    C. Do your best in every task as if the world will end tomorrow

    D. That is not your life's worth.

    E. It is hours of our lives that we can never get back.

    F. Little things like this may seem meaningless.

    G. You have to keep your eyes and ears open to the new opportunity.

I bought it,(think) that when I returned home it would remind me my wonderful Indian adventure. The book claimed that India's people were very welcoming of tourists, and never tried(cheat) them. As I read I felt deeply touched by these warm words.

Suddenly, a monkey came down from a nearby tree, snatched the book from my hand and took it away, along with my bag which contained all my belongings. I couldn't do anything but stand and stare. Then a man approached me and asked I wanted my belongings back. He said it would cost me five US dollars. I had no other choice (leave), so I agreed to pay, but only after my bag was returned.

He blew a whistle and the monkey (immediate) threw the bag down. I picked it up and gave him the money. I later learned that man made his living this way: tricking tourists.

    Dear Tom,

How is everything going? Since you are interested in the shadow play, I'd like to introduce them to you.

As the traditional Chinese folk art, the shadow play has been existed in China for centuries. It dates back to the Han Dynasty, where Emperor Liu Che lost his beloved wife Li. Depressing about her death, he even ignores the state affairs, worrying his officials. Then they made a puppet with the image of Li but performed before the Emperor. He was too pleased that he asked them to spread the art form.

Unfortunately, it is becoming more attractive due to the impact of modern media. Both Chinese artists and the government are making joint efforts conserve the ancient art form.

If you want to know more, don't hesitate to contact me. Best wishes.

    Yours,

    Li Hua
