Most heroes are not super. They don't appear in comic books, on television, or in movies. They just do what they believe needs to be done to make their world a better place. Bike Batman is one of them.

Bike Batman is a 30 - year – old married engineer who lives in Seattle, Washington. He's a cyclist who also buys and sells bikes as a hobby.

About three year, ago, he was looking for his wife. He found one on Craigslist, a website where people list things they want so sell. As he often does, he also looked at Bike Index, a popular website that allows users to register their bikes and post reports when they're taken. The bike, which he was considering purchasing, clearly matched one reported stolen on? Bike Index. Then he called the person who claimed to be the bike's owner and arranged to meet him-supposedly to complete the sale. When the two men met, Bike Batman told the thief. You've got two option. You can wait until a police officer gets here, or you can just get out of here." You can imagine what the thief did.

After that first success, Bike Batman developed a safer routine. When he sees questionable bike ads on Craigslist, he cross-references the image with bikes reported on Bike Index. Once he has confirmed it with the owner, he arranges a meet - up with the thief and will call the Seattle police department so that officers can participate in the action.         His nickname came from a discussion with a police officer who suggested he be called "Robin Hood". Since he wasn't exactly stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, "Batman" seemed a better fit. The idea of a superhero punishing criminals feels pretty silly to him, but the main reason he continues his work is to keep up Seattle's reputation as a friendly city.

    The Domestication (驯化)of Cats

For centuries, the common view of how domestication had occurred was that prehistoric people, realizing how useful it would be to have animals kept for food, began catching wild animals and breeding (繁殖)them. Over time, by allowing only animals with "tame"(驯养)characteristics to produce their babies, human beings created animals that were less wild and more dependent upon people. Eventually this process led to the domestic farm animals and pets that we know today, having lost their ancient survival skills and natural abilities.

Recent research suggests that this view of domestication is incomplete. Prehistoric human beings did catch and breed useful wild animals, but specialists in animal behavior now think that domestication was not simply something people did to animals—the animals played an active part in the process. Wolves and wild horses, for example, may have taken the first steps in their own domestication by hanging around human settlements, feeding on people's crops and getting used to human activity. The animals which were not too nervous or fearful to live near people produced their babies that also tolerated humans, making it easier for people to catch and breed them.

In this version, people succeededin domesticating only animals that had already adapted easily to life around humans. Domestication required an animal that was willing to become domestic. The process was more like a dance with partners than a victory of humans over animals.

At first glance, the laming of cats seems to fit nicely into this new story of domestication. A traditional theory says that after prehistoric people in Egypt invented agriculture and started farming, rats and mice gathered to feast on their stored grain. Wildcats, in tum, gathered at the same places to hunt and eat the rats and mice. Over time, cats got used to people and people got used to cats. Some studies of wildcats, however, seem to call this theory into question. Wildcats don't share hunting and feeding areas, and they don't live close to people. Experts do not know whether wildcats were partners in their own domestication. They do know that long after people had acquired domestic dogs, sheep and horses, they somehow acquired domestic cats. Gradually they produced animals with increasingly tame qualities.

    1. (1) What is suggested in recent research?

A . Animals were less afraid than thought. B . Animals had an active role in their domestication. C . Wolves and horses were the first to be domesticated. D . Domestication meant something people did to animals.
    2. (2) The word "dance" is used in Paragraph 3 to show that       .

A . animals and humans were close B . control over animals was easy C . animals were independent of humans D . domestication was like a game
    3. (3) What probably attracted cats to human settlements?

      A . Other cats. B . Warmth. C . Humans. D . Food
    4. (4) What causes a problem for the theory that cats were domesticated like wolves was?

A . Cats were not friendly to people. B . Cats were not as fierce as wolves. C . Cats had the characteristic of independence. D . Cats showed cleverness when they were hunting.

Some international languages are widely used for many purposes. Some minority languages will die out and some nations tend to keep minority languages. I reckon that most common used international languages ease our life quality and communication with different nationalities. On the other hand, we need to help improve minority languages.

There are many languages in the entire world but two or three minority languages die out each year. Some countries try to save dying languages. For instance, Australian Government created a project to save the language and culture of Maori who are Australian aborigines. And there are other projects to keep minority languages such as American Indian language.

However, the worldwide job market usually requires candidates who can speak English or other international languages. People who cannot speak lingua franca (共通语) could hardly be promoted at work. For example, some companies need an employee who can deal with foreign companies. So most people tend to learn at least one international language that helps them to find a better job.

Therefore, world needs one common lingua franca that should be spoken in any country. Consequently, one common language should be a required subject in every school. So anyone speaking one common language can travel without worries to any point of the world and trade their products. People will not be forced to learn many languages.

In conclusion, we should help minority nations to keep their languages for the cultural diversity. To ease the worldwide communication among nations, we should create a common language and provide courses of it. As a result, no one will face a language issue.

    1. (1) What does the underlined word “reckon” in Paragraph 1 mean?

      A . Deny. B . Fear. C . Ignore. D . Think.
    2. (2) What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

A . Not all minority languages are useful. B . Some minority languages have died out. C . Maori is attractive to Australian tourists. D . American Indian language is well preserved.
    3. (3) Why do most people study more international languages?

A . It benefits their journey. B . They can earn more money. C . It does good to find a good job. D . They are eager to get promoted.
    4. (4) How can we stay away from language problems?

A . By learning a common language. B . By wiping out minority languages. C . By studying more languages at college. D . By communicating more with foreigners.
