I got very tired after doing all the family shopping in the town. I wanted to have a rest before catching the train. I 1 a newspaper and some chocolate and went into the station coffee shop. Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the most famous and most successful children's book writers around the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants.
In 1954, Life magazine published a report about school children who could not read well. The report said many children's books were not interesting at all. Doctor Seuss read it and strongly wanted to help the children and decided to write books that were full of fun and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like bike and like. He did not receive any training in art. However, he drew wonderful pictures for most of his books.
In 1957, Doctor Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a 6-year-old kid could read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it very much. Their parents loved it as well. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him really want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham.
In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize. He was honoured for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents. He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains. Millions of his books have been sold all over the world. People say his books helped change the way American children learnt to read. Up till now, his books are loved by people of all ages. Doctor Seuss once said, "I do not write for children. I write for people."
What do you do if you are in trouble on a lonely island? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane.
Body signals
Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training. When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means "yes". When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side, it means "no". If you want the pilot to know that it's safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend your knees. If you want to say that it's not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side
Smoke signals

The 2017 Fortune Global Forum (财富全球论坛) was held in Guangzhou from December 6 to 8, 2017 for the first time with the theme of "Openness and Innovation: Shaping the Global Economy". This is the fifth Fortune Global Forum held in China. Since its beginning in 1995, the Fortune Global Forum has been providing chances for CEOs of the world's most important companies and world leaders to get together and discuss matters about international business.
There are several reasons why Guangzhou was chosen as the host city for the 2017 Fortune Global Forum. First, Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province which is historically an active centre for free trade. Guangdong Province is also the most populous (人口稠密的) province in China with a population of 110 million, bigger than that of any other province in China. What's more, more than half of the Fortune Global 500 companies have already set up branch offices (分公司) in Guangzhou.
Hosting the 2017 Fortune Global Forum also brings benefits to Guangzhou. First, it will help change the city into a high-level technology centre in the future. Moreover, it will attract more companies to invest and develop in Guangzhou and Guangzhou can take the chance to encourage local companies to go global and deepen cooperation with companies from all over the world.
Great effort was made in order to make the event a success. For example, a total of 1,200 volunteers were chosen mostly from universities to serve the 2017 Fortune Global Forum. Training courses were also carried out to prepare volunteers for their jobs. They even had a volunteer's song. The lyrics and music of the song was written by the famous lyricist Zhong Shan and composer Wang Xiaosong. The official version of the song was sung by famous singers Wang Chenrui and Wang Sulong.
I'm a teacher. My students can always make me feel happy. It was near Christmas during my (one) term teaching at a new school.
