It was only a few weeks after my surgery. I went to Dr. Belt's office for a checkup. It was just after my first chemotherapy (化学疗法) treatment. My scar was still very tender. My arm was numb underneath. This whole set of unique and weird feelings was like having a new roommate to share the two-bedroom apartment formerly known as my breasts—now lovingly known as "the breast and the chest."

As usual, I was taken to an examination room to have my blood drawn, again— a terrifying process for me, since I'm so frightened of needles. I lay down' on the examining table. Ramona entered the room. Her warm sparkling smile was familiar, and stood out in contrast to my fears. I'd first seen her in the office a few weeks earlier. She wasn't my nurse on that day, but I remember her because she was laughing. She laughed in deep, round and rich tones. I remember wondering what could be so funny behind that medical door. What could she possibly find to laugh about at a time like this? So I decided she wasn't serious enough about the whole thing and that I would try to find a nurse who was caring. But I was wrong.

This day was different. Ramona had taken my blood before. She knew about my fear of needles, and she kindly hid the needle under a magazine with a bright blue picture of a kitchen being remodeled. As we opened the blouse, the catheter (导管) on my breast was exposed and the fresh scar on my chest could be seen. She gently reached over and ran her hand across the scar, examining the smoothness of the healing skin and looking for any irregularities. I began to cry gently and quietly. She looked at me tenderly and said, "You haven't touched the scar yet, have you?" And I said, "No."

A Friendly Football Match Between Sister Schools

Every October, my neighborhood has a Halloween costume contest, And every time, my neighbor Ollie and I would race to the announcement board in the park to find out the theme. 

One year, the theme was "Dress up as your favorite book character". Another year, it was "Be something scary". But this year, the theme was kind of, well, themeless. The board wrote "Be creative". It was told that the judge would prefer something original. When I examined the paper on the announcement board, I was totally confused, since it was not really a theme. Ollie hopped off his skateboard to get a closer look. "You're right," he agreed. 

"Since we don't know exactly what we want to be yet, we should start by choosing some cool costume-making materials," Ollie instantly scooped up a bunch of fallen leaves from the oak and proposed using leaves. It seemed impossible to make an entire costume out of leaves, Not to mention these terrible-looking yellow leaves. However, Ollie scooped up some more and try to persuade me, "They're totally free and I can guarantee, no one will be a tree as great as me," "Don't you mean, a tree as great as we?" I grinned, We ended up filling two jumbo bags with different leaves. Ollie's grandma, Abuela helped get us set up with tons of excellent costume-making supplies, We tried on part of our costumes, making the "branches" by gluing (粘) the leaves to our arms. We could tell the "trees" really would be tremendous, On the morning of the contest day, it took us hours to get ready, and we probably lost half our leaves shuffling over to the park. Still, when it was time for contestants (参赛者) to line up in the judging area, I felt pretty proud.

"Yes, I understand, Mrs Tompkin." I looked at the cage by the window with the green budgie perched（栖息）inside. "These little birds can be wonderful company when they start chattering." She laughed, "Yes, but it's a funny thing. Peter never has said that much. I think he's lazy! But I just like having him with me." 

"Of course you do," I said, "but he certainly needs attention now." 

The beak was greatly overgrown, curving away down till it touched the feathers of the breast. I would be able to revolutionize his life with one quick snip from my clippers. The way I was feeling this job was right up my street. 

I opened the cage door and slowly inserted my hand. "Come on, Peter," I wheedled（哄骗）. As I lifted him out, I felt in my pocket with the other hand for the clippers. Then I stopped. The tiny head was no longer poking cheekily from my fingers but had fallen loosely to one side. The eyes were closed. He was dead. 

Mrs Dodds and I looked at each other in horror. When I turned my head towards Mrs Tompkin, I was surprised to see that she was still nodding and smiling. 

I drew her neighbor to one side. "Mrs Dodds, how much does she see?"

"Oh, she's very short-sighted but she's right vain despite her age. Never would she wear glasses. She's hard of hearing, too."

"Well, look," I said. My heart was still pounding. "I just don't know what to do. If I tell her about this, the shock will be terrible. Anything could happen." Mrs Dodds nodded, stricken-faced. "Yes, you're right. She's that attached to the little thing."

"Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today. Let's get a move on," said Kayla's mom. As she sat down at the kitchen table, Kayla asked her parents, "Are you serious about working today? Isn't Labor Day a holiday?"

"Yes, Kayla. It is," replied her dad. "But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was celebrated in the first place."
