Daily physical activity is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. For this reason, many architects and designers are working to create buildings that encourage people to make exercise a part of their ordinary routine. The movement to promote healthy activity through architecture is called active design. It began in 1998 as part of a university public health program, and it has since gained popularity in cities around the world. Active design uses a number of techniques to encourage the occupants of a building to be more active.

One of the most important strategies of active design is inspiring people to make walking part of their routine. A particularly successful tool for promoting walking is the skip-stop elevator. These elevators stop only on every second or third floor, leaving riders to take the stairs in order to reach their destination. Another strategy of active design is to make stairs more pleasant and inviting. Instead of creating dark stairwells that are located in isolated parts of buildings, active design uses well-lit and centrally placed stairs to encourage more foot traffic. Skip-stop elevators and appealing stair design are both effective tools of active design because they offer incentive and opportunity for exercise. In fact, researchers studying a building that employs both skip-stop elevators and more attractive stair design said that 70 percent of building occupants reported using the stairs every day.

Active design encourages physical activity using not only the interior features of a building, but the relationship between a building and its surroundings as well. A building that employs active design may integrate outdoor space in order to make the environment more engaging and promote physical activity. Some elements that architects use to incorporate the exterior with the interior are glass walls, interior gardens or park spaces, and courtyards with open ceilings, all of which de-emphasize the boundaries between inside and outside. These elements make the building more physically and mentally invigorating. Similarly, by increasing the number of entrances and exits to a building, architects can help keep a building's users interested in their surroundings by providing a variety of routes for them to use. If people continue to be stimulated by new sights or experiences, they are less likely to choose the quickest and easiest path to their destination and may instead choose a more physically challenging route.

    1. (1) What does the underlined word “incentive” in paragraph 2 mean?
    2. (2) Why does the author discuss dark stairwells in paragraph 2?
    3. (3) Which of the following is NOT a way that architects weaken the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces?
    4. (4) How does paragraph 2 relate to paragraph 3 in the passage?

For many of us, asking for help is a difficult concept. We may feel as if we are admitting a weakness that world would not have known about, had we not asked for help.

However, people who are able to deliver well-positioned requests for help are often seen as very strong individuals. When they demonstrate the humility (谦卑) to ask for help, they earn the respect of others. People who receive a heartfelt request for help are usually honored by the request. In turn, we are strengthened by the very help that is provided.

One of my clients named Kira recently made a shift in how she was interacting with her boss. When asked to prepare presentations, she assumed that she was expected to develop the content, deliver it at the required meeting and then wait for feedback from her boss. However, Kira recognized that she had not yet made use of her boss's support. She could learn far more about creating attractive presentations by walking through a draft with her boss and obtaining feedback earlier in the process rather than at the back end. So she made the request for his support.

The outcome? Her boss was delighted to coach Kira and was enthusiastic about teaching presentation skills to her. By taking the time to work together on presentation for a number of Kira's key presentations, she benefited from her boss's thought process and thus improved her own presentations. Kira's presentations now have punch!

Some of us are uncomfortable asking for help because we believe that our request places burdens on the other person. However, we may miss an opportunity to show others how we value and respect them. People who know you and think well of you are often highly motivated to help. Furthermore, the more specific you can be about what you need from them, the easier it is for them to assist you.

    1. (1) Which of the following may the author agree with?
    2. (2) What can we learn about Kira's request for help?
    3. (3) What does the underlined sentence "Kira's presentations now have punch" means?
    4. (4) What's the purpose of the passage?

A few years ago I worked in an international company that sold computer devices. I had to travel a lot over the country as a part of my work. I remember that I was at a stage of my life where I only cared about how to make more money.

On one of my trips, I came to the airport to take a bus to downtown, as usual. It was the same routine: get into the city, take the bus to the hotel, visit the customer, work late, take the bus back to the airport and fly back…That day, for some reasons, I decided to take the stairs down to a different exit, where I came across a beautiful garden I had never seen before. I waited there, enjoying the scenery. Finally the bus came.

Usually I always took the seat behind the driver. That day I sat down somewhere in the middle. A boy was seated next to me, carrying a lot of suitcases. Suddenly, he turned to me and gave me one of the most sincere smiles I had ever seen from a stranger. Warmly, he said, "hi, the perfect day in the perfect place, huh?"

I remember thinking to myself ﹣ this must be one of those typical people who is young and naive and just thinks everything is beautiful and easy. Why was he annoying me when I just wanted to enjoy the bus ride? But out of politeness, I replied, "Perfect! Did your parents pay for you to have some vacations on the beach?" "No, I'm not here for vacation, and I don't have parents," He shook his head, "I'm here because I want to achieve my biggest dream. I'm on the way to the army school where my grandfather studied a long time ago. "

    Paragraph 1:

"I lost my dad 10 years ago then my mom married again. My stepfather…

    Paragraph 2:

He smiled and told me that for 10 years, he had only one thing on his mind to…

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze; it felt as though my soul departed(离开) my body and I had no control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the name list posted on the wall of the locker room; my heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends' names on that list but could not find mine. John, Bryce, Ro, I thought, everybody is on here except me. At that moment. I froze; I just could not accept that all my friends were on the basketball team but I was not.

I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. "Hey coach, are you sure that the name list you posted is correct?" I asked anxiously.

"Yes. Sorry if you did not make it this year. There is always next year," the coach replied without the slightest bit of regret.

I could feel the hot, bitter tears building in my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could.  As soon as I walked out, I saw my friends crowding into the locker room to look at the team list. I heard them shouting and laughing as I slowly walked away, every one of them jumping around with excitement after seeing that they made the team.

I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered. I trudged (步履艰难) through the rest of school; walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100-pound weight tied to my backpack. My mind was also blank for the rest of the school day; everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other.

After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the back of the lot, celebrating and joking around. I detoured (绕道) around the side of the school to avoid them, trying not to think about being one of the only people in our friend group to not make the team.

Trees naturally absorbed CO2 through photosynthesis (光合作用), releasing oxygen, storing carbon for decades, or even centuries. Biotechnology firm Living Carbon says lab trials of its genetically-changed poplar trees take up more carbon and grow 1.5 times faster than unchanged ones. The team added genes from pumpkin to the poplars, which makes their photosynthesis more efficient, turning more carbon dioxide into sugars to create wood biomass (生物量).

Though the firm's lab results are promising, biologists warn that high growth rates are not guaranteed in the wild as the poplars compete for sunlight with other plants and trees. Genetically-modified (GM) supertrees may also need much watering and fertilizer to keep their rapid growth.

The results are important given the rate of climate change and climbing CO2 levels in the atmosphere. But critics say there are risks to planting GM trees in the wild if they reproduce with other trees, or negatively affect other plant and animal species. Living Carbon says trees are a hybrid that can only reproduce from cuttings, so cannot cross-pollinate (授粉) with wild trees.

If the field trials are successful then it will still take time to get approval from the government. One sixth, around 135, tree species in the US may face extinction due to climate change, foreign insect species, or disease. And even though field trials of a GM chestnut tree have shown its ability to resist some foreign disease that wiped out billions ofAmerican chestnuts, it still has not been approved for planting.

If CO2 storage is the aim then there are species that already fit the bill. California's Redwood trees store more carbon than any other species. Redwoods are not suitable for every forestry plot, so creating climate adaptable trees through reproducing programs that fit into local ecosystems is the goal. But in the rush to fix the climate crisis, increase CO2 uptake, and carbon storage, GM supertrees may be part of that solution.

    1. (1) How was the poplars' carbon capacity improved?
    2. (2) What is the potential disadvantage of the GM trees?
    3. (3) What does the underlined phrase "fit the bill" in the last paragraph mean?
    4. (4) What can be the best title for the text?
  • 1.  (fill) with shame, the boy lowered his head, ready for the punishment from his dad.
