The first note I ever wrote for my mother said "Hi, Mom！Have a nice day！Love，Marie！".I was twelve when I wrote it, and I folded(折叠) the1into her change purse（零钱包）.
My mother worked as a cleaner in a clothing factory. I knew that when she 2meals in the dining hall, she would have to look for change in her purse. I didn't know that she would keep that note, and always carry it with her.
From the day that I3folded the small piece of paper into my mother's change purse, she and I left each other4notes. They would be put in the fridge, under a lamp, or beside the TV set. I5found one hidden in my shoe. From the outside, our notes may have been the records of our days, ideas and wishes. But to my mother and me, they were a lifeline communication with each other that no one else6.
On October 20, 2009, my mother died after a long illness. I stood near her bed, 7her hand. I didn't cry the day my mom died, 8I didn't cry a week later when I went to collect her things. I was so thankful that she no longer had aches and pains.
Recently, I found a note that my mom9me.It was hidden in the10of my favorite childhood book for years. It read "Dear Marie, I love you always. Miss you a lot. Don't forget me. Be happy! Love, Mom" That day, I cried.

Mr. Evens works in Sydney. Last week he had a two--week holiday, but he didn't know where to go. He said to his friend Robert, "I hate the hot weather here, but I can't find a cool place in Australia. How will I spend my holiday?"
"That's easy," said Robert. "You'd better go to Moscow. Snow and ice are covering the ground now."
Mr. Evens agreed with his friend. He bought an air ticket and soon arrived in Moscow. He made a happy journey there. But one day, he got into trouble. After lunch he w ent to a park outside the city. He saw a dog following him while he was walking past a house. It was hungry and wished him to give it some food to eat. Bad luck! He had no piece of bread or cake in his pockets. He tried to send it away, but it began to bark at him. He wanted to look for a stick but couldn't find anything except snow and ice. Suddenly he saw a stone in the ground. He tried to pick it up but he failed.
"How strange Russians are!" Mr. Evens said to himself. "They do not tie their dogs, but firmly (牢牢地) tie the ground!"
Why do people smoke? One reason is that people become addicted(成瘾) to cigarettes. The addictive substance(物质）in cigarettes is nicotine(尼古丁). When people smoke, the nicotine goes right into the blood stream and makes people feel comfortable. A smoker's body gets used to the nicotine, and if he stops smoking, he feels nervous. Many smokers try to stop smoking but because of the addiction to nicotine they feel so uncomfortable that they often find it too difficult to do so .
Another reason is that people simply enjoy smoking. Having a cigarette for many people means taking a break. For some people smoking becomes part of certain social rituals (礼仪), f or example, sending the cigarette after dinner. Many people enjoy smoking because it gives them something to do with their hands. Reaching for a cigarette, lighting it and flicking (弹掉) the ashes are special comfort in a situation where they feel nervous.
Many people also like the taste of tar (焦油) in cigarettes. However, it is the tar that causes cancer. While governments and health experts have tried to get people to give up smoking completely, cigarette manufacturers (生产商) have tried to keep selling them by producing cigarettes with less tar. Many people in western countries have welcomed these cigarettes since they found it hard to stop smoking and wanted to reduce the danger to their health.
Why should students play sports? Some people think that students play sports in order to get exercise. Others think it can help students have fun. But that is not enough. If students play sports, they can get more than healthy bodies. Why? Here are three more reasons.
Students who play sports do better in school. Some people think that doing exercise will take up students' study time. But a recent study has shown that students who play sports get better scores in school than those who don't. Exercise gets students to learn, remember things and concentrate (集中注意力)better.
Students who play sports develop their teamwork spirits and learn problem-solving skills. When they are working together with others to win games and reach goals, they're learning how to be successful in practice. And these skills will be useful to them for study or their future work.
