Can knots be a form of art? It is in China. It is used for decoration (装饰) on clothing or to hang on a wall. Skilled knot artists make knots that you might see sold in stores that you can take back with you.
What Is a Chinese Knot?
A Chinese knot is a knot that is tied and woven (编织) from a single length of rope to be different shapes. Most knots have two cords (粗线) entering the knot from the top and two leaving from the bottom. Each kind of knot is named after its shape or the symbolic meaning that it carries.
Knot artists can use different colors, but they prefer deep red ones. The color red means good luck in China.

At first, people may have made them to record information before people started to write. One hundred thousand year old tools have been discovered that were probably used to tie and untie knots.
It is known that they were used for artistic decoration and to express thoughts and feelings in the Tang Dynasty (618—907). The traditional art form was carried on by people as part of their culture.
Ancient and Modern Use of Artistic Knots
Even today, Chinese knots are rich in symbolic meaning, and they hold value when given as gifts or passed down through families. For example, in ancient times and even now, lovers may give a knot as a symbol of their love. The "true love knot" and the "double happiness knot" are given or used at weddings to express love and growing old together.
Along with being symbolic gifts or messages, knots are still used if people wear traditional Chinese clothing. They are used as jewelry such as earrings and necklaces.
I owe (亏欠) my father a huge thank-you ! Sure, I need to thank him for all those years of paying my bills, fixing my bikes, and providing a shoulder to cry on. But this year I realized that his contributions (贡献) to my childhood were much more than that.
I grew up as Daddy's Little Girl. If I had a problem that needed fixing or a question that needed answering, he was the one I ran to. This year marks the 20th anniversary (周年纪念) of China's first manned space task, with Yang Liwei becoming the first Chinese astronaut to go to space. Since then, another 17 astronauts have reached for the stars. The choice of the fourth generation (代) of astronauts began in 2022 and is now in full swing. Experts showed how difficult the training is before astronauts can rise to space.
"To make sure that Chinese astronauts accomplish their tasks and return to Earth safely, eight kinds, including over 200 subjects of training, were set," Huang Weifen, leading designer of the astronaut system for China's manned space project, told CCTV News. Apart from physical fitness training, it also includes basic scientific knowledge, health, and so on.
Among the training subjects, the most tiring one is underwater training. This training is designed for astronauts to get used to the microgravity (微重力) environment in space. According to Huang, astronauts stay underwater in suits weighing over 100 kilograms for six hours at a time. Water resistance (阻力) and the heavy suit make every move tiring. "Nie Haisheng once reported he lost two kilos after one under-water training exercise," said Huang. Each astronaut receives training for at least three and a half years before having the chance to go to space.
Chinese astronauts also require language and cultural training to have better communication with their international partners. Their strong mind and hard work have made China a great player in the space race, and they continue to encourage future generations to reach for the stars.
How to Study For Exams
Taking exams is stressful, but you can make it easier by improving the way you study. Studying for your exams will keep you from feeling unprepared, and it will set you up for success!
This is easier said than done, but learning how to take good notes will help you once it comes time to study. Write down everything your teacher writes on the board or puts up in slides. Try to record as much of what the teacher says as possible.
Studying in a dark room is not recommended (推荐). Add lights at night, or in the daytime, open the window coverings (open the window a little, too). People tend to study and focus better in a brighter room with little noise.
Think of your teacher: What is my teacher most likely to ask on the exam? What materials the teacher once emphasized (强调) before exams? This may help you review the most important information for the exams.
You need some time to take breaks and it is better to study when you are feeling relaxed than to exhaust (筋疲力尽) yourself studying all day! Carefully plan your break and study time. Usually, a 20-30 minutes of study and then a 5-minute break is the most effective.
If you don't know the answer to the question, do the next one and come back to it at the end. Struggling and concentrating on a question you don't know the answer to can be time consuming (消耗), which makes you lose marks.
