In the third grade, ten-year-old Jane read a book about poaching (偷猎) the endangered tigers and cutting down forests at will. She told her friend Holt about it and she really wanted to help save the tigers.

Despite being in elementary school, the two girls have organized fundraisers(资金筹集).During their first year, the girls raised $1,500 to save tigers. "We went to a zoo and asked if we could help and it became this huge fun thing. We never expected it to get so big," the girls said.

When Jane and Holt pitched their ideas in the zoo to ask for funds, their table was packed with zoo guests all afternoon. This year's goal is $2,500. Whatever they raise will be matched by the Zoological Society and all be donated(捐赠) to the Tiger Protection Fund.

On top of helping the animal, the girls would also be excited about their names to be proudly posted at the zoo's entrance on a sign with other donors. "If we get our names on it, it's going to feel like being famous, and it's going to be like a dream come true for us," Jane said. They said they were close to their goal and the zoo couldn't be happier.

"Their awareness of what's happening to tigers and their wanting to educate people on what's happening to tigers are unbelievable," Kassner, an animal expert, said. "Three kinds of tigers have already died out and the remaining six are all endangered. The ‘Tiger Girls' are bringing a big and positive effect and won't be stopping anytime soon."

"I'm so happy that we've come this far. We can do this now though we're only fifth graders and just imagine what we can do in the future," Holt said.

    1. (1) What led Jane to have the idea of saving tigers?

Cooking with steam is of great importance in Chinese cuisine. It's one of the best ways to lock the original flavors in the ingredients.

Vegetables are healthy and full of fiber, and steaming is a quick way to cook them without using much oil. Chinese cabbage is a perfect vegetable to steam: tender, less fibrous and mildly sweet. The tender cabbage can be steamed directly with a simple sauce consisting of garlic paste, soy sauce and sugar. Root vegetables like sweet potatoes are also great for steaming. They can be cut into thick sticks or slices and then steamed until the center becomes soft. Thin pieces of carrots can be coated with dry flour and then steamed. This quick dish is usually served with garlic paste.

Steaming fish, shrimp and crabs, is all about preserving the original taste, so freshness is the absolute No. 1 rule when we shop for seafood to be steamed. For fine food from a river, lake or sea, they must be freshly caught the day you buy them. Frozen fish is seldom steamed directly, because there can be a stronger fishy smell and taste. With all the internal organs and scales removed and blood cleaned, the fish is packed with slices of ginger and scallions (葱) that can reduce the fishiness. It's then placed in a steamer that has been preheated to boil, and cooked for 8 to 10 minutes depending on the size of the fish. The final step is to place scallions on top of the steamed fish. Then, in a small pot, heat up some oil and pour it across the body of the fish to help the flavor release. Next, drizzle (浇) a couple spoons of seasoned soy sauce for seafood around the plate and serve. When eating the fish, it's best to dip it in the sauce for the sweet taste.

    1. (1) What is the advantage of steaming according to the passage?
      A . Low cost. B . Sweet taste. C . Shining appearance. D . Original flavor.
    2. (2) Which of the following is NOT correct according to the passage?
A . Chinese cabbage is suitable for steaming. B . Steaming is often one of quick ways to cook vegetables in China. C . Ginger and scallions can increase the fishiness. D . Fresh fish is better than frozen fish in steaming.
    3. (3) What is the right order of making steamed fish according to the passage?

①Clean the fish. ②Steam the fish. ③Drizzle some sauce.④Pour some hot oil onto the fish. ⑤Pack the fish with some ginger and scallions.

      A . ①②③④⑤ B . ①④⑤②③ C . ①⑤④③② D . ①⑤②④③
    4. (4) What is the best title for the text?
A . Cooking meals with steam. B . Cooking seafood in a new way. C . Advantages of cooking with steam. D . Tips for cooking some delicious dishes.

It's an attractive idea: by playing online problem-solving, matching and other games for a few minutes a day, people can improve such mental abilities as reasoning, verbal (语言的) skills and memory. But whether these games deliver on those promises is up for debate.

This year, in perhaps the biggest real-world test of these programs, neuroscientists (神 经学家) at Canada's Western University gathered 8, 563 volunteers globally through Cambridge Brain Sciences, a Toronto-based company that provides assessments to measure healthy brain function. Participants filled out an online question form about their training habits, opinions about training benefits and which, if any, program they used. Some 1, 009 participants reported using brain training programs for about eight months, on average, though the length of time ranged from two weeks to more than five years.

Next, the volunteers completed 12 mental tests about memory, reasoning and verbal skills. When researchers looked at the results, they saw that brain trainees on average had no mental edge over the other group in memory, verbal skills and reasoning. Even among those who had used training programs for at least 18 months, brain training didn't boost thinking abilities above the level of people who didn't use the programs.

"No matter how we dealt with the data, we were unable to find any evidence that brain training was associated with mental abilities," says a researcher. That held true whether the team analyzed participants by age, program used, education or economic situation - all were similar to the group who didn't use the programs. However, brain training may be beneficial when it is connected with real problems in life, researchers say. The real world may be the best brain trainer. They suggest that we practice those skills in different real-life situations. "That's a much better use of one's time than sitting at a computer and doing little tasks."

    1. (1) How were the 1, 009 test participants different from the others?
A . They completed more mental tests. B . They showed better mental abilities. C . They filled an online question form. D . They had brain training experiences.
    2. (2) Which of the following best replaces the underlined word "edge" in paragraph 3?
      A . Advantage. B . Power. C . Illness. D . Control.
    3. (3) What do the researchers suggest about brain training?
A . It should provide scientific data. B . It should promote online programs. C . It should settle problems in life. D . It should benefit more researchers.
    4. (4) Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A . Debate Raised after Research? B . Online Games Boost Brainpower? C . Biggest Real-world Test Ever? D . New Method for Brain Training?

They say once you learn to ride a bike, you never forget. Most of us learned to ride when we were kids, and many still wear our helmets, put our feet on the pedals, and shoot off for a ride on the streets. In recent times, cycling has seen an increase in popularity, so many people raise a question:

First, let's look at the health benefits. Cycling can improve your cardiovascular (心血管的) health and burn extra body fat. Strengthening your muscles in your legs helps increase your potential torque (扭矩) and cadence (节奏). A long ride in the countryside could help you clear your mind, or de-stress. But it's not only about your body and mind there are also some plus sides for your wallet's health.

Cycling can be a great way to go to work or get about town.If you drive to work, sometimes finding somewhere to park can be a nightmare, whereas finding somewhere to chain your bike up can be much simpler. Then, on the subway, there are changes at stations and other people who go to work speaking loudly on their phones to deal with. And if you're worried about safety, there are designated cycle lanes in many major cities. In addition, wearing high-visibility clothing is another way to improve your safety when cycling on the roads.

It can help you reduce your carbon footprints. Not giving off greenhouse gases into the atmosphere is better for the planet and your own environment.

So, whether people want to cycle for their health, their wallet, the environment, or a combination of all of them —the popularity of cycling is on the rise.

    A. What makes cycling so convenient?

    B. But cyclists face neither of these issues.

    C. And people will choose to go to work by cycling.

    D. This can save you a lot of money on fuel or public transportation.

    E. Finally, cycling can also be good for the environment.

    F. And the benefits from cycling aren't just physical, but mental as well.

    G. What makes it so attractive for people to take their bikes once again?

As one as I can remember, it is more than 5 years since Dad left us, whom we missed very much. And what we are supposed to do now is accompany Mum very well, caring for her as much as possible. Mum cherishes everything from Dad, especially the thing that gives her a beautiful memory.

Yesterday, after telling my brother Rhys, and me to stop playing like wild animals, Mum went to take a bath. We were having a pillow fight when suddenly one hit a vase. Mum heard the loud crash. Wasting no time, she went wiping into the room. I was sure that she was going to shout at us, but instead she just knelt by the pieces and began to cry.

This made Rhys and me feel pretty awful. My mom explained to us why she was so upset. In the pieces lay a broken glass rose, one pedal (花瓣) gone, which was given by Dad on their first wedding and anniversary. Dad had said that if he ever forgot to bring flowers home for an anniversary in the future, Mum was to look at that one. It was like their love: it would last a lifetime.

We began crying, and offered to glue it. But Mum said that wouldn't really fix. Now that it had been broken, the value of the "limited edition" had reduced. Tears kept coming down her cheeks.

With great regret, I put both my hands on her shoulders and begged her to forgive us. Mum remained in sadness. And I continued to comfort her, "All things can be broken, Mum. But the only thing that cannot be broken is our love, which is the strongest thing that can never be broken." Hearing this, Mum seemed to be a little relieved. Turning to me and looking at me in the eye, she responded, "You are right, my son."

    注意:续写词数应为80左右。

    Paragraph:

Mum hugged me very tightly and finally smiled.
